Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs) Concentrations in Some Aquatic macrophytes in Hilla River, Iraq

Phragmites australis, Potamogeton pectinatus, Potamogeton perfoliatus and Ceratophyllum demersum were selected to study concentrations of PAHs in lotic ecosystems. Six sampling sites were selected along Al-Hilla River and sampling was conducted in 2010 and 2011. Sixteen PAHs listed as priority pollutants were detected in the samples collected, including Naphthalene (Nap), Acenaphthylene (Acpy), Acenaphthene (Acp), Fluorene (Flu), Phenanthrene (Phen), Anthracene (Ant), Fluoranthene (Flur), Pyrene (Py), Benzo (a) Anthracene (B(a)A), Chrysene (Chry), Benzo (b) Fluoranthene (B(b)F), Benzo (k) Fluoranthene (B(k)F), Benzo (a) Pyrene (B(a)P), dibenzo (a, h) Anthracene (d(b)A), Benzo (ghi) Perylene (B(ghi)P) and Indeno (1,2,3-cd) Pyrene (Ind). The results of the study illustrate that the PAH concentration in macrophytes varies among their species. These variances were as follows: P. australis 0.425 to 299.424 μg/g dry weight (dw) for B(ghi)P and B(b)F, respectively;P. perfoliatus 0.354 to 235.84 μg/g dw for B(b)F and B(ghi)P, respectively;C. demersum 0.996 to 162.942 μg/g dw for Ant and B(ghi)P, respectively;and P. pectinatus 0.383 to 99.87 μg/g dw for Ant and Nap, respectively. The accumulation potential of PAHs was also investigated by calculating the Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) and Bio-sediment Accumulation Factor (BSAF). The ranges of BCF ratios were 0.05 to 5334.5, 0.08 to 1602.5, 0.01 to 536.6, 0.16 to 1882 in P. australis, P. perfoliatus, P. pectinatus and C. demersum, respectively. The range of BSAF ratios were 3.14 to 1041.6 and 1.5 to 2920.8 in P. australis and P. perfoliatus, respectively.

Impact of Hypertension on Type 2 diabetes in mysore Population of South India

Objective: The study aims to explore the prevalence of hypertension and its impact on Type 2 diabetes in a mysore population of the Indian subcontinent. methods: 636 participants volunteered for the study. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were recorded while plasma was analyzed for biochemical markers. The IdF and JNC 7 diagnostic criteria were followed to define diabetes and hypertension. Statistical Analyses: One-way analysis of variance, χ2-test and Logistic regression analysis were performed to assess differences of the mean, proportion and the independent effect of hypertension on the development of type 2 diabetes. Results: Hypertension was observed to be prevalent in 37.1% of the studied population with an insignificant gender difference. Rate of occurrence of hypertensives was found to be significantly higher in type 2 diabetes (51.9%), obese subjects (45.2%), long-term smokers (49%) and alcohol addicts (48%) than control groups. The risk of development of diabetes was significantly higher in hypertensives than normotensive. However, when creatinine and blood urea nitrogen were included in the model, the significance was nullified. Conclusions: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes and hypertension is increasing at an alarming rate. This study reveals that the significance of hypertension as a parameter in predicting the risk of type 2 diabetes was influenced by the renal function and lipid profile.

Water Quality and Some Heavy metals in Water and Sediments of Euphrates River, Iraq

Water samples, sediments from three stations in Euphrates River, lraq were analyzed quantitatively for some physical and chemical characters and six heavy metals （Co, Cu, Fe, mn, Ni and Pb） using flam atomic absorption spectrophotpmeter in period Sept. 2009-Oct. 2010. The physical and chemical characters included temperature, pH, water flow, salinity, dissolved oxygen, BOd5, alkalinity total hardness, calcium and nutrients （nitrite, nitrate reactive phosphate and silicate）. The results showed variation in water flow 0.05-0.40 m/sec., according to the values of salinity 0.40%-0.60% values of the BOd5 were ranged between 0.2-4.3 mg/L. The mean concentration of the heavy metals （Pb, Ni, mn, Co, Cu and Fe） of the dissolved phase in water were 0.13 μg/L, 0.021 μg/L, 0.31 μg/L, 4.29 μg/L, 7.78 μg/L, 6.46 μg/L and 79.04 μg/L, respectively, while their concentration in the particulate phase were 0.59 μg/g, 0.06 μg/g, 0.42 μg/g, 50.06 μg/g, 6.61 μg/g, 7.17 vg/g and 149.42 μg/g dry weight, respectively. Also the mean concentrations of heavy metals in sediment （exchangeable phase） were 0.51 vg/g,0.18 vg/g, 0.08 μg/g, 61.39 μg/g, 5.40 μg/g, 14.06 vg/g and 130.05 μg/g dry weight respectively, and 0.40 μg/g, 0.17 μg/g, 0.10 μg/g, 63.01 μg/g, 4.64 μg/g, 18.44 μg/g and 126.26 μg/g d.W. respectively in residual phase of sediment.

The Impact of a Structured Clinical Pathway on the Application of management Standards in Patients with diabetic Ketoacidosis and Its Acceptability by medical Residents

diabetic Ketoacidosis (dKA) is a serious and potentially a fatal complication of diabetes mellitus. Tools to guarantee proper, evidence-based, guideline implementation are of paramount importance and an essential element for quality patient care. Clinical pathways represent one such tool that clearly promotes the implementation of guidelines and research evidence into clinical practice. The aims of this study were to measure quantitatively and qualitatively the impact of a specially structured Resident-friendly, dKA clinical pathway on the application of evidence-based management standards and its acceptability by the treating resident physicians. A retrospective chart review of patients who were admitted prior to and after the launching of the clinical pathway and a questionnaire assessment of resident’s acceptance of the pathway format were undertaken. Eighty one episodes of dKA in a total of 58 patients fulfilled the criteria for inclusion in the study. Thirty seven admissions were on the pathway (45.7%) and 44 were not (54.3%). documentation of severity indices of patients who were admitted under the pathway were significantly improved with a trend for a shorter hospital stay. The duration of intravenous insulin therapy, intensive care unit consultation and diabetes educator involvement in patient care were not different between the two groups. Residents found the pathway user-friendly, educationally very valuable, reduced their workload and had a positive effect on their dKA management skills.?Conclusions: Use of specially structured, resident-friendly pathway led to significant improvement in documentation of dKA severity indices and empowered our residents with evidence-based knowledge and skills to deal with this serious diabetic complication.

Study the Effect of Boron and Titanium to Resist Corrosion in the Salt Solution for the Alloy （Al-Cu-mg）

The alloy （AI-Cu-mg） alloy important one dating back to the series （2xxx） where copper foundries basic element which represents the number （2）, the study relied on foundries add elements boron （B） and titanium （Ti） and then use a heat treatment （homogenizing process） to improve the corrosion resistance in saline （NaC1 3.5%） of the base alloy （A1-Cu-mg）, was prepared four types of alloys （A, B, C, d） depending on the chemical composition. The results showed that the corrosion resistance in saline solution was the best resistance in the alloy （d）（A1-2% Cu-2% mg-0.1% B-1.0% Ti） compared with the rest of bullion when an examination of corrosion of the alloy prepared after homogenizing. But by examining the surface roughness of the alloy ingot turned out that （d） is softer than the rest of the surface alloys and this is due to the addition of boron and titanium together increases surface smoothness in alloys because it works to reduce the grain size.

Background: Toxoplasmosis had a remarked role in disturbing pregnancy in women by abortions and congenital abnormalities outcome .Vitamin d deficiency had a role in bone fragility, osteoporosis, exposing women to fractures as well as to bone deformities in newborns. Objective: To assess the relationship between toxoplasmosis seropositivity and vitamin d abnormalities in sera of women in childbearing ages using ELISA and auto-analyzers. methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted by examining the sera of 153 women, who visited Azadi Teaching Hospital Gynecological and Obstetric Clinics. Their complaints involve signs of bad obstetric history (BOH) and bone disorders, versus to 46 women negative for (BOH). Their ages ranged from 15 to 50 years. The results: The overall rate of positive toxoplasmosis was 78.43% distributed into the following rates: 22.87%, 49.01%, and 13.07% for Igm, IgG, and Igm + IgG antibodies, P T. gondii Igm than in sera of women aged over 46 years, P Conclusions: The rate of toxoplasmosis among childbearing age women was high, and the relationship between toxoplasmosis and vitamin d deficiency was significant. This finding is preliminary and prone women for getting osteoporosis.

Prognostic Value of Lymphocyte Vascular density and E-Cadherin in Inflammatory Breast Cancer

Background: We recently evaluated four laboratory assays, vascular endothelial growth factor d (VEGF-d), E-cadherin, lymphatic vessel density (LVd) measured by podoplanin, and intra-lymphatic tumor emboli (ILTE), which showed notable differences between inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and non-inflammatory locally advanced breast cancer (LABC). In this study we investigated the potential of the three most quantitatively measured markers, E-cadherin, LVd and VEGF-d, to predict survival in the IBC patients. materials and methods: This study involved the 100 cases identified in the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Registry (IBCR) whose tumors were previously evaluated for the four assays noted above. Living patients were recontacted and survival data were available for up to 17 years. Overall survival (OS) was analyzed through the Kaplan-meier method stratified by E-cadherin, LVd, VEGF-d, and response to chemotherapy. The differences in OS curves were compared using the log-rank test. Results: The median OS for patients with high LVd was 6.63 years (95% CI: 4.06 to 10.14), compared to median at 10 years not reached in those with low LVd (p = 0.03). There was a trend towards a longer median OS in patients with high E-cadherin (10.14, 95% CI: 6.63 to 11.67), compared with those with low E-cadherin (6.26, 95% CI: 3.42 to undeterminable). VEGF-d levels showed no correlation with survival. Conclusion: Low LVd significantly predicts better survival. High E-cadherin expression, as with non-IBC breast cancer and several other malignancies, tends to be associated with a better prognosis.

Further Pharmacological Studies Using the Compound （1 z）-2-（Hyd roxym et hyl）-dodec-1 -E ne-1,3-d iol

The compound （1 z）-2-（hydroxymethyl）-dodec-1-ene-1,3-diol was previously isolated from the integument of the red palm weevil Rhynhophorus ferruginous and found to antagonize calcium chloride induced dysrrhythmia in mice. Further calcium-dependent pharmacological actions performed in this study revealed that it has the ability to inhibit platelets aggregation induced in guinea pigs with either AdP or archegonia acids, and the compound also decreased the arterial pressure in rats in a dose-dependent manner and exerted potential ant consultant activity in mice against pentylene tetrazole-induced seizures. However, no complete protection was observed. Analgesic studies in mice using the hot plate （58 ℃） revealed its potential analgesic activities. Its effective dose 50 （Ed50） was 85.7 ± 6.3 mg/kg （N= 5）. The compound seamed to produce all of the above actions via a calcium antagonistic action.
