Garcinia Kola and Kolaviron Attenuates Bisphenol A-induced Memory impairment and Hippocampal Neuroinflammation in Male Wistar Rats

Bisphenol A (BPA), a toxicant which can leach into food from plastic containers, is reported to induce neurotoxicity among others via oxidative mechanisms. However, antioxidant compounds have been suggested to mitigate BPA-induced toxicities. Garcinia kola (GK) and its bioactive compound, kolaviron, are well-established natural antioxidants, which can exert protective effects against BPA-induced toxicities. This study was designed to investigate the likely mitigating effect of GK and kolaviron on BPA-induced memory impairment and hippocampal neuroinflammation in male Wistar rats. Thirty-five rats were equally grouped and treated as follows: i and ii received distilled water and corn oil, respectively at 0.2 mL, while iii - Vii received BPA (50 mg/kg), BPA + GK (200 mg/kg), BPA + kolaviron (200 mg/kg), GK and kolaviron, respectively for 28 days p.o. Thereafter, behavioral studies were done using the Novel object Recognition and Y maze tests. Subsequently under anaesthesia, the hippocampus in each animal was dissected out, homogenized and analysed for malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione, glutathione transferase, nitrites, interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor-α, acetylcholinesterase, glutamate acid decarboxylase, and arginase activity. Data were analyzed by ANoVA and Tukey Post-hoc test at p p Garcinia kola and Kolaviron mitigate bisphenol A-induced memory impairment and neuroinflammation via antioxidant potentiation and neurotransmitter balance.

Spreading depression and focal venous cerebral ischemia enhance cortical neurogenesis

Endogenous neurogenesis can arise from a variety of physiological stimuli including exercise, learning, or ＂enriched environment＂ as well as pathological conditions such as ischemia, epilepsy or cortical spreading depression. Whether all these conditions use a common trigger to set off endogenous neurogenesis is yet unclear. We hypothesized that cortical spreading depression（CSD） induces neurogenesis in the cerebral cortex and dentate gyrus after cerebral venous ischemia. Forty-two Wistar rats alternatively underwent sham operation（Sham）, induction of ten CSDs or venous ischemia provoked via occlusion of two adjacent superficial cortical vein followed by ten induced CSDs（CSD ＋ 2-Vo）. As an additional control, 15 na？ve rats received no intervention except 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine（Brd U） treatment for 7 days. Sagittal brain slices（40 μm thick） were co-stained for Brd U and doublecortin（DCX; new immature neuronal cells） on day 9 or Neu N（new mature neuronal cells） on day 28. on day 9 after sham operation, cell proliferation and neurogenesis occurred in the cortex in rats. The sole induction of CSD had no effect. But on days 9 and 28, more proliferating cells and newly formed neurons in the ipsilateral cortex were observed in rats subjected to CSD ＋ 2Vo than in rats subjected to sham operation. on days 9 and 28, cell proliferation and neurogenesis in the ipsilateral dentate gyrus was increased in sham-operated rats than in na？ve rats. our data supports the hypothesis that induced cortical neurogenesis after CSD ＋ 2-Vo is a direct effect of ischemia, rather than of CSD alone.

Exposure to Emissions from Kerosene Cooking Stoves and the Pulmonary Health Status of Women in olorunda Community, ibadan, Nigeria

Exposure to high PM10 by women and children for hours on a daily basis in poor ventilated kitchen may lead to respiratory morbidity among this vulnerable group. in Nigeria, data on the levels of air pollutants associated with kerosene stove combustion are very scarce. Like-wise little had been documented on the pulmonary health of women exposed to kerosene stove emission. This study was carried out to measure the levels of kerosene combustion emissions within kitchen environments and also assess the pulmonary function status of the exposed women at baseline. Particulate matter (PM10) and gaseous emissions (GE) were measured in six purposively selected clusters of regular kerosene stove users (KSU) using gravimetric sampler and gas monitors, respectively and their values compared with WHo guideline limits. 167 randomly selected KSU were surveyed to elicit their socio demographic features. A spirometer was used to assess the lung function status (FEV1) of 72 KSU in six neighbourhood kitchen clusters. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, and Pearson’s correlation tests. Respondents’ mean age was 38 + 12.9 years. Mean duration of exposure to GE was 18.9 + 9.8 years. Mean PM10 was 248.1 + 14.1 μg/m3 and ten folds higher than WHo guideline limit of 25 μg/m3. Mean GE in ppm were: Co (0.00), Co2 (200.1 + 12.4), So2 (0.01 + 0.00) and No2 (0.00). Mean FEV1 among KSU was 2.0 + 0.5 litres which was significantly lower than the mean predicted value of 2.7 ± 0.5 litres. There was a negative correlation between PM10 and FEV1 (r = -0.7539, p > 0.05). Safer cooking methods and practices to obviate health hazards are advocated.

Understanding the development and function of T follicular helper cells

A fundamental function of T helper(Th)cells is to regulate B-cell proliferation and immunoglobulin class switching,especially in the germinal ***1 and Th2 lineages of CD41 T cells have long been considered to play an essential role in helping B cells by promoting the production immunoglobulin G2a(igG2a)and igG1/ige,***,it has become clear that a subset CD41 T cells,named T follicular helper(Tfh)cells,is critical to B-cell response *** this review,we summarize the latest advances in our understanding of the regulation of Tfh cell differentiation,the relationship of Tfh cells to other CD41 T-cell lineages,and the role of Tfh cells in health and disease.

Removal of iron, Coliforms and Acidity from Ground Water obtained from Shallow Aquifer Using Trickling Filter Method

Ground water is a major source of drinking water. in the Niger Delta, the ground water is unfit for human consumption due to high concentration of iron, coliforms and acidity. in an attempt to make the water potable, groundwater samples were collected from domestic boreholes and analyzed for physicochemical and microbial parameters using standard analytical methods. The groundwater samples were collected after single and double trickling filter treatment. The treated water from the single and double trickling filter was similarly analyzed. Results show that after treatment, iron decreased from 5.23-9.96 mg/L in the raw water to 1.67-2.02 mg/L in the single treatment and 0.05-0.31 mg/L in the double treated water （P 〈 0.05）. Similarly, pH increased from 4.39-5.17 in the raw water to 5.31-5.87 in the single treatment and 6.09-6.90 in the double treatment （P 〈 0.05）. Coliforms decreased from 60-85 MPN/100 mL in the raw water to 3-10 MPN/100 mL in the single treatment and 0-2 MPN/100 mL in the double treatment （P 〈 0.05）. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that it is unsafe to drink untreated groundwater as currently practiced in the Niger Delta, but should be subjected to double trickling filter treatment and chlorination before consumption.

Parametric Modeling Approach to Covid-19 Pandemic Data

The problem of skewness is common among clinical trials and survival data, which has been the research focus derivation and proposition of different flexible distributions. Thus, a new distribution called Extended Rayleigh Lomax distribution is constructed from Rayleigh Lomax distribution to capture the excessiveness of some survival data. We derive the new distribution by using beta logit function proposed by Jones (2004). Some statistical properties of the distribution such as density, cumulative density, reliability rate, hazard rate, reverse hazard rate, moment generating and likelihood functions;skewness, kurtosis and coefficient of variation are obtained. We also performed the expected estimation of model parameters by maximum likelihood;goodness of fit and model selection criteria, including Anderson Darling, CramerVon Misses, Kolmogorov Smirnov (KS), Akaike information, Bayesian information, and Consistent Akaike information Criterion is employed to select the better distribution from those models considered in the work. The results from the statistics criteria show that the intended distribution performs well and has a good representation of the States in Nigeria’s Covid-19 death cases data than other competing models.

Effect of Toluene and Dioctylphthalate on the Rebar Corrosion of Medium Carbon Steel in Seawater and Cassava Fluid

Chemical mitigation is regularly used as one of the principal prevention and control techniques in reinforcement corrosion. Hence this study presents the effect of toluene and dioctylphthalate on the rebar corrosion of medium carbon steel in seawater and cassava fluid with a view to determining inhibitive potentials of the different inhibitors in the two media. Gravimetric and voltametric techniques were employed in this study and a total of forty-five corrosion coupons of different dimensions were produced. Forty coupons were used for gravimetry and the remaining five for corrosion potentials measurements. Eight of the samples were used as control;while other eight samples were admixed with dioctylphthalate and toluene in concrete cubes. it was later immersed in seawater and cassava fluid for a total duration of 32 days and the measurements were taken at interval of 4 days in order to determine the corrosion rates in mils per year (mmpy). Two controls and admixed samples were later immersed in seawater and cassava fluid, respectively, for durations of thirty-two days to determine the corrosion potentials using a voltmeter and a Copper-Copper Sulphate Electrode (Cu/CuSo4). The pH of each medium was also measured throughout the period of exposure. The results obtained showed that all the samples except the control samples, displayed some degree of inhibition. The inhibition levels for the admixed samples in seawater were on the higher side compared with those in cassava fluid. The inhibition efficiencies for different inhibitors followed different trends in different environment. The inhibition efficiencies for toluene in cassava fluid and seawater were 21.64% and 45.78% respectively. The study concluded that organic inhibitors were effective in inhibiting corrosion in cyanide and chloride contaminated concrete cubes.

Effects of increasing impervious Surface on Water Quality in ile-ife Urban Watershed, Southwestern Nigeria

The urban environment has continued to experience changes from increasing impervious surfaces, which alters the proper functioning of the ecological zones and impairs water quality in the watershed. impervious cover is predominantly used as an indicator to assist in understanding and forecasting the impact of human actions and other related activities on aquatic resources. in this study, the rate of change in land uses using the impervious surface as an indicator, and the percentage of imperviousness on the effect on water quality in the urban watershed were assessed. ile-ife was delineated as an urban watershed, and the percentage of imperviousness from 2008 to 2016 and the effect of imperviousness on water bodies were assessed. The study utilized ASTERDEM, Worldview (0.46 m), iKoNoS (1.4 m), Landsat (30 m) for 2008 and 2016, GPS and Drone (10 cm). Water sampling was carried out in selected locations as generated by the impervious surface analyst tool, (iSAT). The percentage (%) of impervious surfaces accounted for 59.4% (4567.1/7691.5ha) in 2008 and 70.3% (5408.2/7691.5ha) in 2016, from the total number of lands investigated. The turbidity values from low to high regions were 32.3, 55.9 and 82.4 NUT. Changes in LULC of the watershed led to increased surface temperature, impermeable surfaces, and decreased vegetation, which exposes the area to flooding and reduced water quality. This study emphasized the importance of GiS and its integration into urban changes and water quality assessment.

Carbonate Coatings as Protective Barriers for Pipe Borne Water Transport Material

This paper presents the report of corrosion prevention study carried out on plain carbon steel lined with calcite, magnesium carbonate and dolomite as coats. Eight samples each of the steel were dipped into solutions of CaCo3, CaCo3 and MgCo3, and MgCo3. Pipe borne water obtained from obafemi Awolowo University, ile-ife water works was used as the environment. The corroded sample surfaces were subject to microstructural characterization using optical microscopy technique. The results obtained showed that the steel exhibited minimum corrosion rate of less than 0.5 mm/yr in dolomite, followed by MgCo3 and then by CaCo3 with corrosion rate far above 0.5 mm/yr bench mark. The unlined (control) samples have maximum corrosion rate of 0.8 mm/yr. the microstructures revealed widespread localized attacks and to a uniform corrosion. The dolomite lined samples are recommended for corrosion prevention of plain carbon steel in pipe borne water.
