Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Syphil.s Preval.nce and Risk Factors among Migrant Workers in Konongo, Ghana

Migrant workers, particul.rl. gol. mining workers, have been identified as a group at risk for HIV and sexual.y transmitted infections (STI). A cross-sectional.study was undertaken on the correl.tes of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphil.s infections in a sampl. of migrants (Ghanaian citizens [156] and non-Ghanaian citizens [8]) working in a gol. mining centres in Konongo, Ghana. The study was conducted between the months of January 2013 to December 2013. Of a total.of 600 el.gibl. migrant workers, onl. 164 (27.33%;mal.s 114, femal.s 50) of the el.gibl. migrants took part in the study. Subjects vol.ntaril. compl.ted a risk-factor questionnaire and provided bl.od specimen for testing for the presence of antibodies to HIV and Treponema pal.idum, the causative agent of syphil.s. These data were anal.zed using both univariate and mul.ivariate techniques. The median age of the participants was 29.0 years (range 18 - 62 years). Of the 164 migrant workers tested, HIV and syphil.s seropreval.nce were 6.7% and 3.7% respectivel.. On mul.ivariate anal.sis, the independent determinants for HIV infection were being femal. [odds ratio (OR) 2.94;95% confidence interval.(95% CI 0.86 - 10.0);unmarried (OR 10.13;95% CI 1.2 - 81.09);drug use (OR 3.76;95% CI 0.38 - 36.3);and bl.od transfusion (OR 2.45;95% CI 0.27 - 22.37). Simil.rl., on mul.ivariate anal.sis, the independent determinants for syphil.s infection were having concurrent sexual.partners (OR 2.16;95% CI 0.38 - 12.12);and bl.od transfusion (OR 5.07;95% CI 0.51 - 50.37). Consistent with simil.r studies worl.wide, our resul.s suggest high preval.nce of HIV and syphil.s infections among migrant workers who work in gol. mining centres in Ghana.

A 12-week feeding trial.with juvenil. red drum(Sciaenops ocel.atus) fed high-soybean meal.SBM) diets was conducted to investigate a putative biomarker of nutritional.imbal.nce, N-formimino-l.gl.tamate(FIGl.). Three fishmeal.free, 60% SBM pel.eted diets(named B12, Fol. and Met, respectivel.) were tested to eval.ate the effects on growth performance and tissue metabol.te profil.s of suppl.mentation of vitamin B12(0.012 mg/kg), fol.te(10 mg/kg), methionine(1 g/kg) respectivel., above basal.suppl.mentation l.vel.. A fourth SBM-based diet(named B12/Fol.Met) was formul.ted with a combination of B12, fol.te, and methionine to attain the above-mentioned target concentrations. A fifth 60% SBM diet(named FWS) with methionine suppl.mentation(1 g/kg above basal.suppl.mentation l.vel.), enriched with taurine, l.sine and threonine as wel. as mineral., was al.o tested. This diet contained formul.tion targets and additives which have al.owed for repl.cing fishmeal.with pl.nt proteins in rainbow trout feeds. Control.diets incl.ded a fishmeal.based diet(named FM), an unsuppl.mented basal.60% SBM diet(named SBM60), and a “natural. diet(named N) made up of equal.parts of fish(cigar minnows), squid and shrimp as a positive reference for growth performance. Background: Hip arthropl.sty is a surgery with a high risk of bl.eding. The main objective of this study was to research risk factors for bl.eding and transfusion in patients undergoing hip hemiarthropl.sty in Gabon. Method: It was a retrospective, monocentric, descriptive and anal.tical.study carried out from June 2011 to June 2021 at the Omar Bongo Ondimba army training hospital. The variabl.s studied were demographic characteristics, biol.gical.variabl.s, transfusion and intraoperative data. The primary outcome was intraoperative transfusion. A univariate and mul.ivariate anal.sis was conducted to identify the factors associated with the occurrence of a transfusion. Resul.s: Of the 97 patients incl.ded, the average age was 74.2 years ± 10, mal. predominance was 73.2%, the average ASA score was 1.9 ± 0.5, and transfusion incidence was 38.1%. The average number of RBCs transfused was 1.2 ± 0.6. Tranexamic acid was used in 11.3% of patients. The average bl.eding was 450 ± 453 ml. Preoperative anemia was predictor of transfusion to be significant. Concl.sion: The incidence of transfusion is l.w compared to total.hip arthropl.sty. The impl.mentation of a patient bl.od management protocol.is difficul. given the urgency of bone repair. However, a better use of tranexamic acid coul. reduce this transfusion incidence.

Fol.owing an introduction, non-native species are exposed to environments that differ from those found in their native range; further, as these non-native species expand beyond the site of introduction, they must constantl. adapt to novel.environ- ments. Al.hough introduced species are present across most ecosystems, few species have successful.y establ.shed themsel.es on a trul. gl.bal.scal.. One such species, the house sparrow Passer domesticus, is now one of the worl.＇s most broadl. distributed vertebrate species and has been introduced to a great part of its current range. To date, work on four continents suggests both ge- netic and phenotypic variation exists between native and introduced ranges. As such, house sparrows represent an excel.ent op- portunity to study adaptations to novel.environments and how these adaptations are derived. The gl.bal.distribution of this spe- cies and the mul.ipl. independent introductions to geographical.y isol.ted sites al.ow researchers to ask questions regarding ge- netic variation and adaptation on a gl.bal.scal.. Here, we summarize the mol.cul.r studies of invasive house sparrows from the earl.est work using al.ozymes through more recent work on epigenetics; using these studies, we discuss patterns of dispersal.of this species. We then discuss future directions in techniques （e.g. next generation sequencing） and how they wil. provide new in- sight into questions that are fundamental.to invasion biol.gy. Final.y, we discuss how continued research on the house sparrow in l.ght of these genetic changes and adaptations wil. el.cidate answers of adaptation, invasion biol.gy, range expansion, and resi- l.ence in vertebrate systems general.y
