FUNcTIONAL NEAR-INFRARED SPEcTROScOPY-BASED ASSESSMENT OF ATTENTION IMPAIRMENTS AFTER TRAUMATIc BRAIN INJURY

A frequent consequence of traumatic brain injury(TBI)is cognitive impairment,which results in significant disruption of an individual's everyday *** date,most clinical rehabilitation interventions still rely on behavioral observation,with little or no quantitative information about physiological changes produced at the brain *** brain imaging has been extensively used in the study of cognitive impairments following ***,its applications to rehabilitation have been *** is due in part to the expensive or invasive nature of these *** objective of this study is to apply functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIR)to the assessment of attention impairments following *** provides a localized measure of prefrontal hemodynamic activation,which is susceptible to TBI,and it does so in a noninvasive,affordable and wearable way,thus partially overcoming the limitations of other *** included 5 TBI subjects and 11 healthy *** activation measurements were collected during a target categorization *** differences were found in the hemodynamic response between healthy and TBI *** particular,the elicited responses exhibited reduced amplitude in the TBI ***,the results providefirst evidence of the ability of fNIR to reveal differences between TBI and healthy subjects in an attention *** is therefore a promising neuroimaging technique in thefield of *** use of fNIR in neurorehabilitation applications would benefit from its noninvasiveness and cost-effectiveness and the neurophysiological information obtained through the evaluation of the hemodynamic activation could provide invaluable information to guide the choice of intervention.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s,*** chance and his colleagues,using picosecond-long laser pulses,spearheaded the development of time-resolved spectroscopy techniques in an effort to obtain quantitative information about the optical characteristics of the *** efforts by chance and colleagues expedited the translation of near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)-based techniques into a neuroimaging modality for various cognitive *** in the early 2000s,*** chance guided and steered the collaboration with the Optical Brain Imaging team at Drexel University toward the development and application of afield deployable continuous wave functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIR)system as a means to monitor cognitive functions,particularly during attention and working memory tasks as well as for complex tasks such as war games and air tra±c control scenarios performed by healthy volunteers under operational ***,these collaborative efforts led to various clinical applications,including traumatic brain injury,depth of anesthesia monitoring,pediatric pain assessment,and braincomputer interface in *** this paper,we introduce how these collaborative studies have made fNIR an excellent candidate for specified clinical and research applications,including repeated cortical neuroimaging,bedside or home monitoring,the elicitation of a positive effect,and protocols requiring ecological *** paper represents a token of our gratitude to *** chance for his influence and *** this manuscript we show our appreciation by contributing to his commemoration and through our work we will strive to advance thefield of optical brain imaging and promote his legacy.

Status and prospects for symmetric organic redox flow batteries

As environmental concerns from fossil fuel consumption intensify, large-scale energy storage becomes imperative for the integration of renewable sources like wind, hydro, and solar with the electrical *** flow batteries, particularly those employing organic molecules, are positioned as a key technology for this purpose. This review explores the growing field of symmetric organic redox flow batteries(ORFBs) within this context. Unlike traditional asymmetric designs based on unique active materials for each electrode, symmetric ORFBs involve a single bipolar species for both electrodes. This review highlights the benefits of a symmetric design, and categorizes five distinct classes of organic bipolar molecules used in both aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. By providing a comprehensive overview of their cell cycling and performance characteristics, the strengths and weaknesses of the diverse categories of bipolar molecules are highlighted for both solvent systems, as are opportunities for future development. This should guide new research directions and advance the development of practical symmetric ORFBs.

Important parameters in plasma jets for the production of RONS in liquids for plasma medicine: A brief review

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are among the key factors in plasma medicine. They are generated by atmospheric plasmas in biological fluids, living tissues and in a variety of liquids. This ability of plasmas to create a delicate mix of RONS in liquids has been used to design remote or indirect treatments for oncological therapy by treating biological fluids by plasmas and putting them in contact with the tumour;Documented effects include selective cancer cell toxicity, even though the exact mechanisms involved are still under investigation. However, the "right" dose for suitable therapeutical activity is crucial and still under debate. The wide variety of plasma sources hampers comparisons. This review focuses on atmospheric pressure plasma jets as the most studied plasma devices in plasma medicine and compiles the conditions employed to generate RONS in relevant liquids and the concentration ranges obtained. The concentrations of H2O2, NO2^-, NO3^- and short-lived oxygen species are compared critically to provide a useful overview for the reader.

Impact of distance on postoperative follow-up in patients of pediatric surgery:a retrospective review

Objective centralization of medical services in canada has resulted in patients travelling long distances for healthcare,which may compromise their *** hypothesized that children living farther from a children’s hospital were offered and attended fewer follow-up *** We reviewed children less than 17 years of age referred to the general surgery clinic at a tertiary children’s hospital during a 2-year period who underwent *** statistics were *** We identified 723 *** majority were male(61%)with a median age of 7 years(range 18 days to16 years)and were from the major urban center(MUc)(56.3%).The median distance travelled to hospital for MUc patients was 8.9 km(range 0.9-22 km)vs 119.5 km(range 20.3-1950 km)for non-MUc *** children were offered more follow-up appointments(72.7%vs 60.8%,pcant differences existed in follow-up attendance rates(MUc 88.5%vs non-MUc 89.1%,p=0.84)or postoperative complications(9.8%vs 9.2%,p=0.78).There were no *** Patients living farther from a hospital were offered fewer follow-up appointments,but attended an equivalent rate of follow-ups when offered *** and remote follow-up are underused approaches that can permit follow-up appointments while reducing associated travel time and expenses.
