Coronavirus Disease(COVID-19),which began as a small outbreak in Wuhan,China,in December 2019,became a global pandemic within months due to its high *** the absence of pharmaceutical treatment,various non-pharmaceutical interventions(NPIs)to contain the spread of COVID-19 brought the entire world to a *** almost a year of seemingly returning to normalcy with the world's quickest vaccine development,the emergence of more infectious and vaccine resistant coronavirus variants is bringing the situation back to where it was a year *** the light of this new situation,we conducted a study to portray the possible scenarios based on the three key factors:impact of interventions(pharmaceutical and NPIs),vaccination rate,and vaccine *** our study,we assessed two of the most crucial factors,transmissibility and vaccination rate,in order to reduce the spreading of COVID-19 in a simple but effective *** order to incorporate the time-varying mutational landscape of COVID-19 variants,we estimated a weighted transmissibility composed of the proportion of existing strains that naturally vary over ***,we consider time varying vaccination rates based on the number of daily new *** method for calculating the vaccination rate from past active cases is an effective approach in forecasting probable future scenarios as it actively tracks people's attitudes toward immunization as active case *** simulations show that if a large number of individuals cannot be vaccinated by ensuring high efficacy in a short period of time,adopting NPIs is the best approach to manage disease transmission with the emergence of new vaccine breakthrough and more infectious variants.

Near-field terahertz nonlinear optics with blue light

The coupling of terahertz optical techniques to scattering-type scanning near-field microscopy(s-SNOM)has recently emerged as a valuable new paradigm for probing the properties of semiconductors and other materials on the *** have demonstrated a family of related techniques,including terahertz nanoscopy(elastic scattering,based on linear optics),time-resolved methods,and nanoscale terahertz emission ***,as with nearly all examples of s-SNOM since the technique’s inception in the mid-1990s,the wavelength of the optical source coupled to the near-field tip is long,usually at energies of 2.5 eV or *** in coupling of shorter wavelengths(i.e.,blue light)to the nanotip has greatly inhibited the study of nanoscale phenomena in wide bandgap materials such as Si and ***,we describe the first experimental demonstration of s-SNOM using blue *** femtosecond pulses at 410 nm,we generate terahertz pulses directly from bulk silicon,spatially resolved with nanoscale resolution,and show that these signals provide spectroscopic information that cannot be obtained using near-infrared *** develop a new theoretical framework to account for this nonlinear interaction,which enables accurate extraction of material *** work establishes a new realm of possibilities for the study of technologically relevant wide-bandgap materials using s-SNOM methods.

Variations in Soil Physico-Chemical Properties as Influenced by Landuse in a Toposequence

Soil, water and air work interchangeably for optimum growth and productivity. Soil as a resource provides crops with essential nutrients necessary for growth and human consumption. With the insurgence of high population growth leading to pressure on lands, poor land management etc., this tendency of the soil as a nutrient pool is seen to be dwindling. It is therefore prudent to investigate and understand the dynamism of soil properties to inform proper management. Understanding topography effects and assessing soil properties on different slope positions is a first-hand step in ensuring proper soil management practices. This paper considers the assessment of physico-chemical properties of soils located on different slope gradients and land use types on the Wamaso research site in Ghana made principally of cape coast granite. In all, eighteen samples were collected from identified horizons of five distinctive subsections of the slope were delineated as follows, summit (PP1), shoulder (PP2), middle (PP3), foot slope (PP4) and toe slope (PP5) respectively. Remarkable variations were observed within PP1 to PP3 and then PP5. Pearson’s correlation index revealed that the associations between most of the soil physico-chemical were not consistent across the identified slope positions. The biplot of the first two principal components together is 68.3% of the total variation and might be interpreted as change in Cation exchange capacity, sodium, sand and clay. On the first axis highlights the influence of sand and clay on soil fertility, also the relationship between pH and Na. Organic carbon derived from organic matter contributes to the availability of the basic soil cations and therefore enhances ECEC of the soils and hence the relationship obtained from the biplot. In sum, this research achieved the objective which sought to substantiate indeed the impact topography has on soil physico-chemical properties thereby serving as a reference for the classification of the soils

Dear Editor,Gut microorganisms process food in animal guts and release many metabolic by-products,which are predicted to influence host physiological processes such as energy and lipid ***,we investigate how succi-nate,a TCA cycle intermediate that is a major predicted release product of gut bacteria in Drosophila,influences the nutritional physiology of its Drosophila *** ad-ministered succinate as a dietary supplement to microbe-free Drosophila,and quantified key nutritional *** succinate significantly reduced fly lipid levels by up to~50%.This response was not replicated in paral-lel experiments conducted with dietary fumarate supple-ment,indicating that it could not be attributed to a gen-eral effect of TCA *** hypothesize that microbe-derived succinate may contribute to the reduced lipid content of Drosophila bearing gut bacteria,relative to axenic *** generally,this study high-lights the importance of microbial-derived metabolites as regulators of host metabolism.

Circulating tumor cells isolation:the "post-EpCAM era"

Circulating tumor cells （CTCs） represent a submicroscopic fraction detached from a primary tumor and in transit to a secondary site. The prognostic significance of CTCs in metastatic cancer patients was demonstrated for the first time more than ten years ago. To date, it seems clear enough that CTCs are highly heterogeneous and dynamically change their shape. Thus, the inadequacy of epithelial cell adhesion molecule （EpCAM） as universal marker for CTCs detection seems unquestionable and alternative methods able to recognize a broader spectrum of phenotypes are definitely needed. In this review the pleiotropic functions of EpCAM are discussed in detail and the role of the molecule in the biology of CTCs is critically dissected.

Neurogenesis in the adult olfactory bulb

Neurogenesis is the process by which cells divide, migrate, and subsequently differentiate into a neuronal phenotype. Significant rates of neurogenesis persist into adulthood in two brain regions, the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus and the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricles. Cells of the subventricular zone divide and migrate via the rostral migratory stream to the olfactory bulb where they differentiate into granule and pefiglomerular cells. With the discovery of large-sca^e neurogenesis in the adult brain, there have been significant efforts to identify the mechanisms that control this process as well as the role of these cells in neuronal functioning. Although many questions remain unanswered, new insights appear daily about adult neurogenesis, regulatory mechanisms, and the fates of the progeny. In this review we highlight the main studies investigating factors that regulate neurogenesis in the subventricular zone, neuronal migration to the olfactory bulb, neuronal integration into the existing bulbar network and shortly discuss the functional meaning of this process.
