2003年10月至2004年2月，在马里兰州大洋城一家旅馆住过的旅客中诊断出8例军团菌病（7例确诊，1例疑似）。本报告对伍斯特县卫生局（WCHD）、马里兰州健康及心理卫生署（DHMH）和疾病预防与控制中心（CDC）随后进行的一项联合调查进行了总结。调查指出，该旅馆的饮用热水系统极有可能是传染源。这次爆发强调了加强以州为基础的监控对及时诊断和控制旅游相关军团菌病的重要性。

Natural disasters have impacted human settlements throughout the centuries, imparting lessons as new ways and strategies to avoid or minimize the damage inflicted by the natural processes. This on-going process has created new landscapes instrumental to man＇s balance of the use of the land by taking into account the probability of further natural disasters. This paper discusses the responses to disaster challenges taking past experiences on ＂after disaster decisions＂ in London 1666, in Lisbon 1755 as a framework to analyse the more recent Great East Japan Earthquake disaster. The concept of sustainability which adds a new perspective to the subject of more resistant solutions and strategies as the opportunity for a new design is presented by the destruction. Sustainable environmental, social and cultural issues improvements are important goals introduced in the 20th century and enrich long-term human adaptations to natural processes. They are also considered in this analysis as an evolving final product of the human adaptation that results in more durable cultural landscapes.

BACKGROUND Orthopedic implant-related infection remains one of the most serious complications after orthopedic *** recent years,there has been an increased scientific interest to improve prevention and treatment ***,many of these strategies have focused on chemical *** To analyze the effect of alternating current electrical fields on bacterial adherence to titanium *** Staphylococcus aureus(***)and Escherichia coli(***)were exposed to 6.5 V electrical currents at different frequencies:0.5 Hz,0.1 Hz,and 0.05 *** exposure,a bacterial count was then performed and compared to the control *** variables registered included the presence of electrocoagulation of the medium,electrode oxidation and/or corrosion,and changes in pH of the *** The most effective electrical model for reducing *** adhesion was 6.5 V alternating current at 0.05 Hz achieving a 90%adhesion reduction *** ***,the 0.05 Hz frequency model also showed the most effective results with a 53%adhesion reduction rate,although these were significantly lower than *** adhesion reduction rates were observed for *** and *** in the studied ***,the presence of electrode oxidation makes us presume these conditions are not optimal for in vivo *** Although our findings suggest electrical currents may be useful in preventing bacterial adhesion to metal surfaces,further research using other electrical conditions must be examined to consider their use for in vivo trials.

Dioxins in the Food Chain: Contamination Fingerprint Analysis in Breeding Hens, Hatching Eggs and Broilers

While routine monitoring poultry meat was obtained from breeding hens, dioxins contaminations were detected in Portugal. Levels of 430.9 pg PCDD/F-WHO-TEQ/g1 were found, which are higher than the official limits legally allowed for this matrix (1.75 pg PCDD/F-WHO-TEQ/g). To identify the magnitude of the contaminations, 60 samples were collected from poultry farms and different matrices, namely: feed, water, wood shavings from the litters, muscle of the breeding hens, hatching eggs collected in the positive farm and muscle collected from broilers farms supplied by the positive breeding farm. The comparison of the dioxins congeners profiles showed that there was a coincidence of peaks of higher relative concentrations in the wood shavings, with the peaks of the highest relative concentration in the hatching eggs, especially the relative concentrations of the congeners 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD and OCDD, which may be explained by the role of VLDLy in the delivery of triglycerides to the oocyte, where they will be used as the energy source for the developing embryo. The comparison of the dioxins congeners profiles of the breeding hens muscle with the poultry muscle, showed a coincidence of peaks of higher relative concentrations in the congeners 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD and OCDD which may indicate a dechlorination pathway “in vivo”. Results allowed concluding that those wood shavings, improperly used as poultry litters, were certainly the source of contamination of the food chain.

advanced material with antibacterial properties would be a promising way to improve the disinfection process in food plants. Our objective was to combine the bactericidal effect of TiO2 with the mechanical strength of TiN coatings. A TiO2 rutile film was obtained after annealing of a supplied 316 stainless steel with a TiN coating. This TiO2 upperlayer displays a photocatalytic activity under UV light exposure. The substrates with the TiN coating and the TiO2 upperlayer are more hydrophobic than the 316 control. The adhesion of either Listeria or Pseudomonas, on 316-TIN is characterized by the presence of clusters of cells, while the oxidation of the TiN surface leads to a more hydrophilic layer where cells are individualized. After UV illumination of the adherent cells and subsequent growth, the residual bacterial population present on 316-TIO2 is lower than that present on the 316-TIN. The bactericidal effect is more important on Listeria than on Pseudomonas.
