Study on the Effect of Variation of Flow in Sequencing Batch Reactor Using PCA and ANOVA

Wastewater treatment using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology is one of the state-of-the art wastewater management systems. In this technology equalization, biological treatment and secondary clarification are performed in a single reactor in a time control sequence. SBR system is idler for the areas where the available land is limited, since it operates in less space and very cost effective even on small scales. The control of the operational parameters during the process of biological wastewater treatment is often complicated due to the dynamic change in the composition and characteristics of the raw wastewater, flow rates and other parameters influencing the complex nature of the treatment process and the process in SBR has a unique cyclic batch operation. The performance of the SBR was studied using pilot and real plant at Puducherry. The parameters considered in this study are flow, Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS), pH, temperature, influent and effluent of Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). As a part of the study, the effect of constant flow and varying flow on the organic loading of the influent TSS, BOD and COD and their influence on the organic load of the effluent parameters were examined to identify the level of significance of the parameters in relation to the flow. The impact of flow on other parameters was also examined. The experimental data obtained from pilot and real plants were analyzed using multi variate statistical analyses like correlation analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Analysis of variance (ANOVA). The statistical analysis revealed that constant flow had no significant role and the influent parameters alone had the critical role, whereas varying flow as well as the influent parameters had the significant role on the performance of SBR.

Carbon Footprint Analyses of Wastewater Treatment Systems in Puducherry

Carbon footprint analysis is a method to quantify the life cycle Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) emissions and identify the measure to reduce climate change impacts. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has identified that the global warming and climate change which is one of the most important issues in the domain of environment are caused by the excessive emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) mainly constituting Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4) and Nitrous oxide (N2O). The municipal wastewater treatment plant receives wastewater for treatment and finally discharges the treated effluent. The emissions of GHG during the treatment of wastewater as well as during the treatment process of sludge and also for energy generation are known to be on-site GHG emissions. Off-site GHG emissions are generated due to transportation and disposal of sludge, off-site energy and chemical production. In Puducherry, the municipal wastewater is being treated using oxidation ponds, Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) and Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR). Wastewater treatment using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology is one of the state-of-the art wastewater management systems. In this technology equalization, biological treatment and secondary clarification are performed in a single reactor in a time control sequence. The emissions of GHG from the Oxidation ponds of 12.5 MLD, UASB reactor of 2.5 MLD and SBR of 17 MLD were assessed based on the IPCC guidelines and the total emissions of GHG in terms of equivalent of CO2 were compared. The performance of the SBR is more efficient and the emissions of GHG are less than the emissions in the UASB as well as in oxidation ponds. The emission of GHG in SBR is about 60% of the existing treatment systems of oxidation ponds and UASB thus a reduction of 40% GHG emission could be achieved.

Effect of angiotensin converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism in South Indian children with nephrotic syndrome

Nephrotic syndrome is one of the most common childhood kidney diseases. It is mostly found in the age group of 2 to 8 years. Around 10%-15% of nephrotic syndrome cases are non-responders of steroid treatment(SRNS).Angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)(I/D) gene association studies are important for detecting kidney disease and herein we assessed the association of ACE(I/D) polymorphism with nephrotic syndrome in South Indian children. We recruited 260 nephrotic syndrome(162 boys and 98 girls) and 218(140 boys and 78 girls) control subjects. ACE I/D polymorphism was analyzed by PCR using genotype allele specific primers. In ACE(I/D), we did not find significant association for the ungrouped data of nephrotic syndrome children and the control subjects. Kidney biopsies were done in 86 nephrotic syndrome cases(minimal change disease, n = 51;focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, n = 27;diffuse mesangial proliferation, n = 8). We segregated them into the minimal change disease/focal segmental glomerulosclerosis groups and observed that the ACE’D’ allele was identified with borderline significance in cases of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and the ’Ⅰ’ allele was assessed as having very weak association in cases of minimal change disease. ’Ⅱ’ genotype was weakly associated with minimal change disease. Gender specific analysis revealed weak association of’ID’ genotype with female nephrotic syndrome in females. Dominant expression of DD genotype was observed in males with nephrotic syndrome. Our finding indicated that ACE(I/D) has moderate association with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. However, due to the limited number of biopsy proven focal segmental glomerulosclerosis subjects enrolled, further studies are required to confirm these results.

Objective Mechanisms underlying chronic,pathological pain are not *** in peripheral nociceptors and their synapses with spinal neurons can serve as a cellular basis for the development and maintenance of chronic pain following inflammation or nerve *** studies have shown that activation of nociceptive nerve afferents at frequencies relevant to pathological pain states can trigger a unique form of long-term potentiation(LTP) at spinal synapses between nociceptor terminals and spinal neurons projecting nociceptive information to the ***, relative pre- and post-synaptic contributions and underlying mechanisms of spinal LTP are not *** of the nitric oxide(NO)-cGMP-PKG-I pathway has been suggested in the induction of pathological pain in behavioural studies *** To address a potential presynaptic component to C-fiber-evoked LTP on spinal neurons,we generated mice conditionally lacking PKG-I,a key molecular target of cGMP,specifically in nociceptors(SNS-PKG-I mice).This led to absence of PKG-I in nociceptors,while preserving expression in spinal neurons,brain and all other organs.A combination of electrophysiological,behavioural and biochemical methods was used in the present study. Results We recorded homosynaptic LTP from spinal lamina I neurons projecting to the periaqueductal grey(PAG),which were visualized via retrograde labelling upon stereotactic injection of the fluorescent tracer DiI in the PAG.A conditioning low frequency stimulation of 2 Hz for 2 min(LFS) produced LTP of monosynaptic C-fiber-evoked EPSCs by more than 200%at 30 min in spinal-PAG projection neurons of control mice(PKG-Ifl/fl),but failed to do so in SNS-PKG-P’" mice.A protocol of minimal stimulation revealed that a decrease of frequency of synaptic failure was evoked following LFS conditioning stimulus in slices derived from PKG-Ifl/fl mice,while the rate of synaptic failure did not change significantly following LFS in slices

In this work, an attempt has been made to design an Electro Cardio Gram (ECG) and Photo Plethysmo Gram (PPG) based telemedicine system for rural health care. In India as per the survey conducted by Indian Medical Society in the year 2009, it has been revealed that only 2% of the qualified doctors practice in rural areas. Also, according to the statistics taken by the World Health Organization, every year an estimated 17 million people die of various cardio vascular diseases. This paper introduces the transmission of ECG and PULSE from remote areas to the specialists’ office. The ECG and PPG signals are acquired, digitized and processed using LabVIEW for detection of heart and pulse rate. These data are transmitted using two methods namely Web publishing tool and Shared Variables. The results confirm the transfer of data with less than millisecond delay.

Evaluation of larvicidal activity of Pongamia pinnata extracts against three mosquito vectors

Objective:To evaluate the mosquito larvicidal activity of Pongamia pinnata(***)extracts against three mosquito ***:The methanol and hydroalcohol extracts of bark part of *** L were tested against fourth instar larvae of Culex quinqnefasciatus,Aedes aegypti and Anopheles *** mortality was observed 24 h and 48 h after treatment,data was subjected to probit analysis to determine lethal concentration(LC_(50)and LC_(90))to kill 50 and 90 percent of treated larvae of tested ***:The larval mortality was found in both methanol and hydroalcohol extracts of *** against Culex quinquefascialus,Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi with LC_(50)values of 84.8,118.2 and 151.7 ppm;97.7,128.3 and 513 *** highest larval mortality was found in methanol extract of *** when comparable to the hydroalcohol ***:These results suggest that both methanol and hyrdoalcohol extracts have the potential to be used as an ideal ecofriendly approach for the control of disease *** could lead to isolation of novel natural larvicidal compounds.

Background: Adenosine deaminase (ADA) and 5'-nucleotidase (5'-NT) play a crucial role in adenosine metabolism in healthy individuals. Adenosine is an inflammatory mediator of asthma. Changes in adenosine metabolism and role of ADA and 5'-NT in regulating adenosine level in asthmatics and correlation of these changes with severity of asthma are not clearly understood. Methods: In this study, we screened 5217 patients, of which 2416 were diagnosed with asthma. Further, of 2416 asthmatics, only 45 patients who strictly fulfilled the selection criteria were enrolled in the study. The patients were classified into mild, moderate and severe persistent groups;each group consisted of fifteen patients. Fifteen healthy subjects served as controls. Adenosine levels and activities of 5'-NT, total ADA, ADA1 and ADA2 in serum, lymphocytes and erythrocytes were determined. The data were analysed statistically and p vice versa.
