A lattice Boltzmann exploration of two-phase displacement in 2D porous media under various pressure boundary conditions

While experimental designs developed in recent decades have contributed to research on dynamic nonequilibrium effects in transient two-phase flow in porous media,this problem has been seldom investigated using direct numerical simulation(DNs).Only a few studies have sought to numerically solve Navier—stokes equations with level-set(Ls)or volume-of-fluid(VoF)methods,each of which has constraints in terms of meniscus dynamics for various flow velocities in the control volume(CV)*** shan—Chen multiphase multicomponent lattice Boltzmann method(sC-LBM)has a fundamental mechanism to separate immiscible fluid phases in the density domain without these ***,this study applied it to explore two-phase displacement in a single representative elementary volume(REV)of two-dimensional(2D)porous *** a continuation of a previous investigation into one-step inflow/outflow in 2D porous media,this work seeks to identify dynamic nonequilibrium effects on capillary pressure—saturation relationship(P_(c)—s)for quasi-steady-state flow and multistep inflow/outflow under various pressure boundary *** simulation outcomes show that P_(c),s and specific interfacial area(a_(nw))had multistep-wise dynamic effects corresponding to the multistep-wise pressure boundary *** finer adjustments to the increase in pressure over more steps,dynamic nonequilibrium effects were significantly alleviated and even finally disappeared to achieve quasisteady-state inflow/outflow ***,triangular wave-formed pressure boundary conditions were applied in different periods to investigate dynamic nonequilibrium effects for hysteretical Pc—*** results showed overshoot and undershoot of P_(c)to s in loops of the nonequilibrium *** addition,the flow regimes of multistep-wise dynamic effects were analyzed in terms of Reynolds and capillary numbers(Re and Ca).The analysis of REV-scale flow regimes showed higher Re(1significant

Insulin,a key pleiotropic hormone,regulates metabolism through several signaling pathways in target tissues including skeletal muscle,liver,and *** the brain,insulin modulates learning and memory,and impaired insulin signaling is associated with metabolic dysregulation and neurodegenerative *** the receptor level,in aging and Alzheimer’s disease(AD)models,the amount of insulin receptors and their functions are *** and animal model studies suggest that memory improvements are due to changes in insulin ***,diabetes mellitus(DM)and insulin resistance are associated with age-related cognitive decline,increased levels ofβ-amyloid peptide,phosphorylation of tau protein;oxidative stress,pro-inflammatory cytokine production and dyslipidemia. Recent evidence shows that deleting brain insulin receptors leads to mildobesity and insulin resistance without influencing brain size and apoptosis ***, deleting insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) affects brain size anddevelopment, and contributes to behavior changes. Insulin is synthesized locally in the brain andis released from the neurons. Here, we reviewed proposed pathophysiological hypotheses toexplain increased risk of dementia in the presence of DM. Regardless of the exact sequence ofevents leading to neurodegeneration, there is strong evidence that mitochondrial dysfunctionplays a key role in AD and DM. A triple transgenic mouse model of AD showed mitochondrialdysfunction, oxidative stress, and loss of synaptic integrity. These alterations are comparable tothose induced in wild-type mice treated with sucrose, which is consistent with the proposal thatmitochondrial alterations are associated with DM and contribute to AD development. Alterationsin insulin/IGF-1 signaling in DM could lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and low antioxidantcapacity of the cell. RANs simulations of the U and V grooves effect in the subcritical flow over four rotated circular cylinders

This paper presents a CFD study about the effect of the V and U grooves in the flow over four cylinders in diamond shape configuration at subcritical flow conditions（Re= 41 000）. The k- ε Realizable turbulence model was implemented to fully structured hexahedral grids with near-wall refinements. Results showed that the numerical model was able to reproduce the impinging flow pattern and the repulsive forces present in the lateral cylinders of the smooth cylinder array. As a consequence of the flow alignment induced by the grooves, a jet-flow is formed between the lateral cylinders, which could cause an important vortex induced vibration effect especially in the rear cylinder. The magnitudes of the shear stresses at the valleys and peaks for the V grooved cylinders were lower than those of the U grooved cylinders, but the separation points were delayed due the U grooves presence. It is discussed the presence of a blowing effect caused by counter-rotating eddies located near the grooves peaks that cause a decrease of the shear stresses in the valleys, and promote them at the peaks.

Maternal undernutrition and offspring sex determine birth-weight, postnatal development and meat characteristics in traditional swine breeds

Background: The aim of this study was to determine how maternal undernutrition during pregnancy and offspring birth-weight can affect the postnatal development of offspring under farm conditions, which may lead to consequences in its meat and carcass quality. The current study involved a total of 80 litters from Iberian sows fed a diet fulfilling daily requirements(n = 47; control) or providing 70% daily requirements(n = 33; underfed) from d 38 to d 90 of gestation when fetal tissue development begins. After birth, piglets born live were classified as low birthweight(LBW; se, 240 control and 230 underfed pigs(50% males and females) distributed by BW category and sex were studied until the ***: At birth and weaning, there were significant differences in all morphological measures and weight between NBW and LBW piglets as expected(P s of the gestational feed restriction. During the growing phase, NBW pigs continued with higher weight than LBW pigs on all the days of evaluation(P s and LBW-males showed a catch-up growth. However, underfed pigs showed slower growth and higher feed conversion ratio than control pigs(P s old. Determination of site quality is a basic tool for proper selection of locations and species, in management of forest plantations. Throughout the Caribbean studies of site quality are few and are hampered by statistical limitations, inappropriate growth models, and limited data. We fitted growth curves for dominant height to evaluate and clas- sify site quality ofteak （Tectona grandis） plantations by using data from 44 permanent sample plots established since 1990 in 3--22 years old teak plantations in the Colombian Caribbean region. We used Korf＇s and yon Bertalanffy＇s models to fit curves as non-linear effects models. Both models, with a single random parameter, were considered as adequate for dominant height growth modelling, but Korf＇s model was superior. The resulting curves were anamorphic and closely reflected high variability in site quality. Five site classes were clarified： at a base age of 12 years old, teak reached a mean dominant height of 24.8 m on the best sites, 9.8 m in the worst sites, and in the averages sites, 15.8-18.8 m. Using this model, we identified the best and the worst sites for teak plantations in the Caribbean region. This model proved a useful tool, not only for site quality evaluation, but also for improved teak plantation planning and management.

Background:Retreatments are sometimes necessary to correct residual or induced refractive errors following refractive *** different combinations of primary treatment methods and retreatment techniques have been studied,however,few studies have investigated wavefront-optimized(WFO)technology for retreatment following primary refractive *** study aimed to report the outcomes of WFO photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)retreatments of refractive error following previous laser refractive surgery with PRK,laser in situ keratomileusis(LAsIK),or laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy(LAsEK).Methods:We reviewed records of patients who underwent WFO PRK retreatments using the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q 400 Hz Excimer Laser system(Alcon surgical)between January 2008 and April 2011 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Madigan Army Medical *** were recorded in terms of uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA),manifest refraction spherical equivalent(MRsE),corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA),and complications at 1 month(M),3 M,and 6 M ***:seventy-eight patients(120 eyes)underwent WFO PRK retreatment during the study *** surgery was surface ablation in 87 eyes(78 PRK,9 LAsEK)and LAsIK in 33 *** mean spherical equivalent before retreatment was−0.79±0.94 D(−3.00 to 1.88 D).UDVA was≥20/20 in 69 eyes(60.0%)at 1 M,54 eyes(71.1%)at 3 M,and 27 eyes(73.0%)at 6 M *** was within±0.50 D of emmetropia in 78 eyes(67.8%)at 1 M,59 eyes(77.6%)at 3 M,and 25 eyes(67.6%)at 6 M *** was maintained within±1 line of pre-op in 113 of 115 eyes(98.3%)at 1 M,74 of 76 eyes(97.4%)at 3 M,and 37 eyes(100%)at 6 M ***:Although follow-up was limited beyond 3 M,WFO PRK retreatments in patients with residual refractive error may be a safe and effective *** studies are necessary to determine the long-term safety and stability of outcomes.

Dengue is a global health problem without current specific treatment nor safe vaccines *** severe dengue is related to pre-existing non-neutralizing dengue virus(DENV)antibodies,the role of T cells in protection or pathology is *** cutaneous DENV infection in immunocompetent mice we previously showed the generation of PNA+germinal centers(GCs),now we assessed the activation and proliferation of B and T cells in draining lymph nodes(DLNs).We found a drastic remodelling of DLN compartments from 7 to 14 days post-infection(dpi)with greatly enlarged B cell follicles,occupying almost half of the DLN area compared to*24%in na?ve *** clusters of proliferating(Ki-67+)cells inside B follicles were found 14 dpi,representing*33%of B cells in DLNs but only*2%in noninfected *** GCs,we noticed an important recruitment of tingle body macrophages removing apoptotic *** contrast,the percentage of paracortex area and total T cells decreased by 14–16 dpi,compared to *** randomly distributed Ki-67+T cells were found,similar to non-infected ***69 expression by CD4+and CD8+T cells was minor,while it was remarkable in B cells,representing 1764.7%of change from basal levels 3 *** apparent lack of T cell responses cannot be attributed to apoptosis since no significant differences were observed compared to noninfected *** study shows massive B cell activation and proliferation in DLNs upon DENV *** contrast,we found very poor,almost absent CD4+and CD8+T cell responses.
