Black liquor is obtained as a by-product of the pulping process,which is used to convert biomass into pulp by removing lignin,hemicelluloses and other extractives from wood to free cellulose fibers.Lignin represents a major constituent in black liquor,with quantities varying from 20%to 30%,of which a very low share is used for manufacturing value-added products,while the rest is mainly burned for energy purposes,thus underestimating its great potential as a raw material.Therefore,it is essential to establish new isolation and extraction methods to increase lignin valorization in the development of bio-based chemicals.The aim of this research work was to determine the effect of KOH or ethanol concentration as an isolation agent on lignin yields and the chemical characteristics of lignin isolated from formacell black liquor of oil palm empty fruit bunch(OPEFB).Isolation of lignin was carried out using KOH with various concentrations ranging from 5%to 15%(w/v).Ethanol was also used to precipitate lignin from black liquor at concentrations varying from 5%to 30%(v/v).The results obtained showed that the addition of KOH solution at 12.5%and 15%concentrations resulted in better lignin yield and chemical properties of lignin,i.e.,pH values of 3.86 and 4.27,lignin yield of 12.78%and 14.95%,methoxyl content of 11.33%and 10.13%,and lignin equivalent weights of 476.25 and 427.03,respectively.Due to its phenolic structure and rich functional groups that are favorable for modifications,lignin has the potential to be used as a green additive in the development of advanced biocomposite products in various applications to replace current fossil fuel-based material,ranging from fillers,fire retardants,formaldehyde scavengers,carbon fibers,aerogels,and wood adhesives.

Searching the global optimal value in heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) becomes more difficult along with the increasing scale of cases.In structural opitimization model,such as stage-wise superstructure,solution domain can be enlarged by adding the stages of network,which would involve multiple integer and continuous variables in optimization and result in a decreasing computational efficiency.Thus,a new nodes-based model with stream splits is proposed,which can promote the quality of result and decrease time consumption at the same time.The characteristic of this model is that it changes the matching mode of heat exchangers by setting the number of nodes on streams to quantify the positions of heat exchangers.The proposed nodes-based model has more flexibility in generating and eliminating the heat exchangers and strong ductility in exploring the solution domain.The random walk with compulsive evolution is modified for enhancing its searching ability and applying modified random walk algorithm with compulsive evolution (RWCE) into the new proposed model.The obtained results of Case 1,Case 2 and Case 3 are superior to those reported in the literature,which decreases 106 USD·a-1,1253 USD·a-1,23 444 USD·a-1,respectively,verifying the robust effectiveness of this new model in solving HENS problem.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the performance of a service system platform based on the Internet of Things(IoT)for monitoring nutritional deficiencies in plants and providing fertilizer recommendations.There are two distinct differences between this work and previous ones;namely,this service system platform has been developed based on IoT using a system engineering approach and its performance has been evaluated using dependability.We have successfully developed and integrated a service system platform and chlorophyll meter that is based on IoT.We have also successfully tested the performance of the service system platform using the JMeter software.The dependability value measured from the five tested variables(reliability,availability,integrity,maintainability,and safety)showed a value of 0.97 which represents a very good level of system confidence in not failing to deliver services to users under normal operational conditions.From a future perspective,this platform can be used as an alternative service to monitor nutrient deficiencies in plants and provide fertilization recommendations to increase yields,reduce fertilizer costs,and prevent the use of excessive fertilizers,which can cause environmental pollution.

The aim of this research work was to evaluate the potential of using renewable natural feedstock,i.e.,Jatropha curcas oil(JCO)for the synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethane(NIPU)resin for wood composite applications.Commercial polyurethane(PU)is synthesized through a polycondensation reaction between isocyanate and poly-ol.However,utilizing toxic and unsustainable isocyanates for obtaining PU could contribute to negative impacts on the environment and human health.Therefore,the development of PU from eco-friendly and sustainable resources without the isocyanate route is required.In this work,tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide was used as the activator to open the epoxy ring with 3-Aminopropyltriethoxisylane as a catalyst to yield urethane of JCO(UJCO).The UJCO were characterized by Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy(FTIR)and their oxirane,and hydroxyl values were measured.The result showed that a decrease in oxirane value was found while the hydroxyl value was increased during the time,confirming that the urethane group was formed.The presence of functional groups in FTIR spectra at wave numbers 1732.08,1562.34,and 3348.42 cm^(−1) indicates the functional groups of C=O(urethane carbonyl),–NH,and–OH,respectively confirmed this finding.The potential applications of NIPU in the wood composite were also outlined.

BACKGROUND Globally,complete neurological recovery of spinal cord injury(SCI)is still less than 1%,and 90%experience permanent disability.The key issue is that a pharmacological neuroprotective-neuroregenerative agent and SCI regeneration mechanism have not been found.The secretomes of stem cell are an emerging neurotrophic agent,but the effect of human neural stem cells(HNSCs)secretome on SCI is still unclear.AIM To investigate the regeneration mechanism of SCI and neuroprotective-neuroregenerative effects of HNSCs-secretome on subacute SCI post-laminectomy in rats.METHODS An experimental study was conducted with 45 Rattus norvegicus,divided into 15 normal,15 control(10 mL physiologic saline),and 15 treatment(30μL HNSCssecretome,intrathecal T10,three days post-traumatic).Locomotor function was evaluated weekly by blinded evaluators.Fifty-six days post-injury,specimens were collected,and spinal cord lesion,free radical oxidative stress(F2-Isoprostanes),nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB),matrix metallopeptidase 9(MMP9),tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),interleukin-10(IL-10),transforming growth factor-beta(TGF-β),vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),B cell lymphoma-2(Bcl-2),nestin,brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF)were analyzed.The SCI regeneration mechanism was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling(PLS SEM).RESULTS HNSCs-secretome significantly improved locomotor recovery according to Basso,Beattie,Bresnahan(BBB)scores and increased neurogenesis(nestin,BDNF,and GDNF),neuroangiogenesis(VEGF),anti-apoptotic(Bcl-2),anti-inflammatory(IL-10 and TGF-β),but decreased proinflammatory(NF-κB,MMP9,TNF-α),F2-Isoprostanes,and spinal cord lesion size.The SCI regeneration mechanism is valid by analyzed outer model,inner model,and hypothesis testing in PLS SEM,started with pro-inflammation followed by anti-inflammation,anti-apoptotic,neuroangiogenesis,neurogenesis,and locomotor function.CONCLUSION HNSCs-secretome as a potential neuroprotective-neur

The researches on solid electrolyte have been significantly increasing due to the safety problem in lithium ion battery.The lithium phosphates are chosen due to environmentally friendly.In the present study LiPOwas synthesized by solid state reaction using NHHPOand LiCOwith the ratio 1:2 at various temperatures of600 ℃,800 ℃ and 900℃.The products were characterized by x-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and impedance spectroscopy.The x-ray diffraction showed that all samples consisted of two phases.It was found that the products consisted of 52.44% LiPOand 47.56% LiPO;93.56% LiPOand 6.44% LiPO;and46.27% LiPOand 53.67% LiPOunder the synthesizing temperature of 600 ℃,800℃ and 900 ℃,respectively.The highest ionic conductivity of 3.85 ×10S/m was achieved for composite LiPO-LiPOwith the highest content of 93.56% LiPO.This conductivity is higher compared with single phase of LiPO,LiPOand LiPO.The increase in ionic conductivity may be due to the mixed anion effects related to the phosphate networks,and it also corresponds to the existence of anorthic phase LiPOwith the space group P-1(2).The crystal lattice analysis showed that the reactant LiPOconsisted of diphosphate groups PO.The lithium tetrahedral LiOwere linked to POgroups formed a continuous framework containing large voids,available for Li~+ ion transport,and thus it exhibited high conductivity.A composite LiPO-LiPOis a promising solid electrolyte for solid state battery.

Liquid phase equilibrium of phenol extraction from bio-oil produced by biomass pyrolysis using thermodynamic models

Utilization of biomass as a new and renewable energy source is being actively conducted by various parties. One of the technologies for utilizing or converting biomass as an energy source is pyrolysis, to convert biomass into a more valuable product which is bio-oil. Bio-oil is a condensed liquid from the vapor phase of biomass pyrolysis such as coconut shells and coffee shells. Biomass composition consisting of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin will oxidize to phenol which is the main content in bio-oil. The total phenolic compounds contained in bio-oil are 47.03%(coconut shell) and 45%(coffee shell). The content of phenol compounds in corrosive bio-oils still quite high, the use of this bio-oil directly will cause various difficulties in the combustion system due to high viscosity, low calorific value, corrosivity, and instability. Phenol compounds have some benefits as one of the compounds for floor cleaners and disinfectants which are contained in bio-oil.The correlation between experimental data and calculations shows that the UNIQUAC Functional-group Activity Coefficients(UNIFAC) equilibrium model can be used to predict the liquid–liquid equilibrium in the phenol extraction process of the coconut shell pyrolysis bio-oil. While the Non-Random Two Liquid(NRTL) equilibrium model can be used to predict liquid–liquid equilibrium in the extraction process of phenol from bio-oil pyrolysis of coffee shells.

Analyzing CO_(2) concentration changes and their influencing factors in Indonesia by OCO-2 and other multi-sensor remote-sensing data

We used OCO-2 products and considered three factors that potentially affect CO_(2) concentration in Indonesia:sea surface temperature(SST),forest fires and vegetation.From 2014 to 2016,CO_(2) concentration in Indonesia showed a trend of increase,which is consistent with the global increase reported by the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite(GOSAT)Project.As an archipelago country,the results indicate that SST has a direct effect on the CO_(2) concentration in Indonesia.Their changing exhibits similar fluctuations;meanwhile,CO_(2) concentration and SST also presented positive correlation.In 2015,the number of fire hotspots suddenly increased to 140,699,because of occurrence of the worst forest fire.Due to special geographic conditions,forest fires did not induce CO_(2) concentration changes in Indonesia,but CO_(2) concentration in the corresponding islands showed a trend of increase.CO_(2) concentration increased in Kalimantan during the occurrence of forest fire in September–October 2014,and CO_(2) concentration increased in Kalimantan and Sumatra during the occurrence of forest fire in September–October 2015.Vegetation indices were stable and presented no correlation with CO_(2) concentration.This study demonstrated that OCO-2 is capable of monitoring CO_(2) concentration at a regional scale;additionally,an effective method for using OCO-2 Level 2 products is proposed.
