The 6 August 2023 MW5.5 Pingyuan earthquake is the largest earthquake in the central North China Plain (NCP) over the past two decades. Due to the thick sedimentary cover, no corresponding active faults have been reported yet in the epicenter area. Thus, this earthquake presents a unique opportunity to delve into the buried active faults beneath the NCP. By integrating strong ground motion records, high-precision aftershock sequence relocation, and focal mechanism solutions, we gain insights into the seismotectonics of the Pingyuan earthquake. The aftershocks are clustered at depths ranging from 15 to 20 km and delineate a NE-sW trend, consistent with the distribution of ground motion records. A NE-sW nodal plane (226°) of the focal mechanism solutions is also derived from regional waveform inversion, suggesting that the mainshock was dominated by strike-slip motion with minor normal faulting component. Integrating regional geological data, we propose that an unrecognized fault between the NE-sW trending Gaotang and Lingxian-Yangxin faults is the seismogenic fault of this event. Based on the s-wave velocity structure beneath the NCP, this fault probably extends into the lower crust with a high angle. Considering the tectonic regime and stress state, we speculate that the interplay of shear strain between the Amurian and south China blocks and the hot upwelling magma from the subducted paleo Pacific flat slab significantly contributed to the generation of the Pingyuan earthquake. © 2024 The Authors

Background schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-saharan Africa and frequently imported to Europe. Male urogenital manifestations are often neglected. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symptoms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serology *** We carried out a prospective, community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-saharan Africa living in *** serology tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out, and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured *** We included 388 adult males, mean age 43.5 years [standard Deviation (sD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the European Union was 17 [Interquartile range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was senegal (N = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested positive forschistosoma. Parasite eggs were present in the urine of only 1.3%. Nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with positiveschistosoma serology results: pelvic pain (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), pain on ejaculation (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dyspareunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectile dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), self-reported episodes of infertility (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic sTIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). The current work models a weak(soft) interface between two elastic materials as containing a periodic array of micro-crazes. The boundary conditions on the interfacial micro-crazes are formulated in terms of a system of hypersingular integro-differential equations with unknown functions given by the displacement jumps across opposite faces of the micro-crazes. Once the displacement jumps are obtained by approximately solving the integro-differential equations, the effective stiffness of the micro-crazed interface can be readily computed. The effective stiffness is an important quantity needed for expressing the interfacial conditions in the spring-like macro-model of soft interfaces. specific case studies are conducted to gain physical insights into how the effective stiffness of the interface may be influenced by the details of the interfacial micro-crazes.

successful implantation requires concerted interactions during the apposition, adhesion, and invasion of the embryo into a receptive endometrium. however, the embryo implantation rate for assisted reproduction remains low despite the transfer of good quality embryos. Changes in endometrial transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics, and even microbiota all play important roles in embryo implantation. specifically, the expression of steroid hormone-regulated adhesive and anti-adhesive molecules during the embryo implantation window is becoming an area of increasingly intense research. This review (a) summarizes the different molecules expressed in the receptive endometrium and (b) proposes the use of surface protein markers to predict pregnancy outcomes from assisted reproduction.
