Background: In patients undergoing pneumonectomy, intraoperative pulmonary and cardiac complications are the major cause of morbidity and mortality. Protective lung ventilation strategies may decrease the overall lung injury. Right, ventricular dysfunction may occur during the surgery and after the pneumonectomy, in the early postoperative period, with reduced RV ejection fraction and increased RV end-diastolic volume index, caused by increased RV afterload. Case report: We describe the case of a 28-year-old non-smoker female who underwent to a right pneumonectomy. The patient presented intraoperative hemodynamic instability and signs of RV dysfunction, requiring vasoactive amines and nitric oxide. Discussion: This article is intended to provide an overview of the anesthetic management for pneumonectomy including the hemodynamic management and considerations of the causes and management of right ventricular dysfunction.

The purpose of this paper was to assess which environmental factor(s) (location, sowing season or years) in the common black bean genotypes interaction was more expressive and to verify the existence of genotypes with broad and/or specific adaptations to sowing season. Data of grain yield of thirteen genotypes were tested in twelve trials of value of cultivation and use during 2003 and 2004 in the south-central region of Brazil. Analyses of variance were performed with the decomposition of genotypes × environments interaction, which allowed a partial isolation of factors, and subsequently, eight trials were used which allowed a complete isolation of factors. The most important interactions were genotypes × years (R2 = 2.5%) and genotypes × locations (R2 = 1.9%), while genotypes × sowing seasons was the least important (R2 = 1.4%). Thus, it is more important to evaluate the genotypes in different locations and years than at different seasons. Most genotypes showed wide adaptation, but some lines showed strong specific adaptation.

Emergent Macrophytes Alter the Sediment Composition in a Small, Shallow Subtropical Lake: Implications for Methane Emission

Aquatic macrophytes in shallow lakes emit high levels of methane. We hypothesize that the presence of emergent aquatic macrophytes in an artificial shallow lake promotes important input of autochthonous organic matter (OM) in sediment and higher levels of methane emission via bubbles. Samplings were performed at three sites in a small, shallow subtropical lake: (1) one station in the limnetic region and (2) - (3) two stations in the littoral region ((2) inside and (3) outside aquatic macrophyte stands). A higher concentration of OM was observed at the macrophyte station, and within this site, a higher methane concentration was observed in the sediment. These results could explain the methane ebullition values at macrophyte sites. At the macrophyte station, methane emission via bubbles contributed 17% to 56% of the total methane emission;however, at the other stations, its contribution via bubbles, was lower than 1%. This research confirmed the importance of emergent macrophytes at Polegar Lake as a source of OM in sediment and methane emission via bubbles. Further, we could confirm the positive effects of temperature on methane emission, mainly by bubbles.

The aim of this study was to characterize the testicular isoform of angio-tensin-converting enzyme (tACE) before and after semen cryopreservation, and in the acrosome reaction of sperm from Nelore bulls in vitro. Ejaculates of 10 sexually mature Nelore bulls were used. After semen was collected, 1.0 mL of the ejaculate was used for the analysis and the rest was subjected to cryopreservation. Fresh semen before freezing, and frozen/thawed semen were centrifuged twice and the pellet was resuspended intyrode’s albumin lactate pyruvate (TALP). Thereafter, 100 μL aliquots containing 100 × 106 spermatozoa were prepared. Aliquots of samples were used for western blot analysis, subjected to capacitation, and thereafter, acrosome reaction assays were performed in vitro. With the help of an anti-ACE monoclonal antibody, a 100 kDa protein band was identified in the spermatozoa of Nelore bulls. Cryopreservation reduced the intensity of the protein bands obtained by western blot assay to less than half of that observed prior to freezing (P P < 0.05), indicating the involvement of ACE in these processes. It is concluded that tACE can be found in the spermatozoa of Nelore bulls, and cryopreservation process decreases the intensity of bands of this enzyme;and that the inactivation of tACE reduces the capacity of spermatozoa to undergo the acrosome reaction.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide public health problem. Populations with a growing number of vehicles are experiencing many traumas and accidents. The highest-risk group is young men. Significant advances in neurosurgery and intensive therapy have resulted in increased survival rates of TBI patients. These higher survival rates, in turn, have led to an increasingly higher number of patients with neurological, cognitive, clinical, and social problems. This lack of knowledge about TBI has been called by some “the silent epidemic”. In recent years, studies of patients with moderate and severe TBI are increasing. Glasgow Coma Scale ≤ 8 and abnormal pupils at admission are used to determine the prognosis of patients with moderate or severe TBI. Several biomarkers such as interleukins, thiobarbituric acid reactive species, and some hormones have been studied in an effort to aid prognosis. Testosterone plays a key role in men. Thus, an understanding of androgens in TBI is essential to follow these survivors of head trauma. This review will discuss the epidemiology of TBI, its association with male hypogonadism, and possible treatments.
