Interspecies variation in DNA damage induced by pollution

The choice of a suitable species to translate pollution signals into a quantitative monitor is a fundamental step in biomonitoring plans. Here we present the results of three years of biomonitoring at a new coal power plant in central Italy using three different aquatic and terrestrial wildlife species in order to compare their reliability as sentinel organisms for genotoxicity. The comet assay was applied to the common land snail Helix spp., the lagoon fish Aphaniusfasciatus, and the green frog Rana esculenta sampled in the area potentially exposed to the impact of the power station. The tissue concentration of some expected pollutants （As, Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr） was analysed in parallel samples collected in the same sampling sites. The three species showed different values in the comet assay （Tail Intensity） and different accumulation profiles of heavy metals. Aphanius fasciatus showed an increasing genotoxic effect over time that paralleled the temporal increase of the heavy metals, especially arsenic, and the highest correlation between heavy metals and DNA damage. Helix spp. showed levels of damage inversely related to the distance from the source of pollution and in partial accordance with the total accumulation of trace elements. On the contrary, Rana esculenta showed a low capability to accumulate metals and had inconsistent results in the comet test. The fish appeared to be the most efficient and sensitive species in detecting chemical pollution. Overall, both the fish and the snail reflected a trend of increasing pollution in the area surrounding the power plant across time and space [Current Zoology 60 （2）： 308-321, 2014].

Fluoroquinolone-based protocols for eradication of Helicobacter pylori

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a widespread pathogen infecting about 40% of people living in urban areas and over 90% of people living in the developing regions of the world. H. pylori is well-documented as the main factor in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease, chronic gastritis, and gastric malignancies such as cancer and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-lymphoma; hence, its eradication is strongly recommended. The Maastricht IV consensus, which focused on the management of H. pylori infection, set important new strategies in terms of treatment approaches, particularly with regards to first- and second-line treatment protocols and led to improved knowledge and understa.ding of H. pylori resistance to antibiotics. In recent years, various fluoroquinolone-based protocols, mainly including levofloxacin, have been proposed and effectively tested at all therapeutic lines for H. pylori eradication. The aim of the present paper is to review the scientific literature focused on the use of fluoroquinolones in eradicating H. pylori.

Monitoring gully erosion in the European Union: A novel approach based on the Land Use/Cover Area frame survey (LUCAS)

The high-detection-sensitivity saturated-absorption cavity ring-down(SCAR)technique is extended to Lambdip spectroscopy of rovibrational molecular transitions in the near-infrared ***-comb-referenced sub-Doppler saturation measurements,performed on the acetylene(ν_(1)+ν_(3)+ν_(4)←ν_(4))R(14)e line at6562 cm^(-1),are analyzed by a SCAR global line profile fitting routine,based on a specially developed theoretical *** to a conventional cavity ring-down evaluation,our approach yields dip profiles with a linewidth freed from saturation broadening effects,reduced by 40%,and a signal-to-noise ratio increased by 90%.Ultimately,an overall(statistical and systematic)fractional uncertainty as low as 7×10^(-12)is achieved for the absolute line-center *** the same time,our method is also able to accurately infer the linear(nonsaturated)behavior of the gas absorption,providing Lamb-dip-based line strength measurements with a relative uncertainty of 0.5%.

Treatment for isolated loco-regional recurrence of gastric adenocarcinoma: Does surgery play a role?

AIM： To evaluate the role of surgical treatment for isolated Ioco-regional recurrences of operated gastric adenocarcinoma. METHODS： Among the 837 patients operated for gastric adenocarcinoma between December 1979 and April 2004, 713 （85%） underwent resection with curative intent. A retrospective review of a prospectively collected gastric cancer database was carried out. Overall recurrence rate was 44% （315 cases）, with 75% occurring within the first 2 years from the operation. Isolated L-R recurrences were observed in 38 （12%） patients. Symptomatic lesions were observed in 27 （71%）. RESULTS： Six （16%） patients were macroscopically resected with curative intent. The recurrence was located in the gastric stump after a STG in three patients, in the esophagojejunal anastomosis after a TG in two patients and in the gastric bed after a TG in one patient. Surgical procedures consisted of three secondary TG, two esophagojejunal resection and one excision of an extraluminal recurrence. Postoperative complications occurred in two patients （33%）, including one anastomotic leakage and one hemorrhage. The latter patient died of sepsis 35 d after the surgery （mortality rate 17%）. All patients died of recurrent gastric cancer： 2 within 1 year from surgery （8 and 11 mo, respectively）, 2 after 16 and 17 mo respectively and 1 after 28 mo from the second operation. CONCLUSION： Surgery plays a very limited role in the treatment for isolated Ioco-regional recurrence of gastric adenocarcinoma.

Advances in medical decision support systems for diagnosis of acute graft-versus-host disease: molecular and computational intelligence joint approaches

Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is a serious systemic complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stemcell transplantation (HSCT) causing considerable morbidity and mortality. Acute GVHD occurs when alloreactivedonor-derived T cells recognize host-recipient antigens as foreign. These trigger a complex multiphase process thatultimately results in apoptotic injury in target organs. The early events leading to GVHD seem to occur very soon,presumably within hours from the graft infusion. Therefore, when the first signs of aGVHD clinically manifest, thedisease has been ongoing for several days at the cellular level, and the inflammatory cytokine cascade is fully ***, it comes as no surprise that progress in treatment based on clinical diagnosis of aGVHD has been limited in the past30 years. It is likely that a pre-emptive strategy using systemic high-dose corticosteroids as early as possible couldimprove the outcome of aGVHD. Due to the deleterious effects of such treatment particularly in terms of infection riskposed by systemic steroid administration in a population that is already immune-suppressed, it is critical to identifybiomarker signatures for approaching this very complex task. Some research groups have begun addressing this issuethrough molecular and proteomic analyses, combining these approaches with computational intelligence techniques,with the specific aim of facilitating the identification of diagnostic biomarkers in aGVHD. In this review, we focus on theaGVHD scenario and on the more recent *** also attempt to give an overview of the classical and noveltechniques proposed as medical decision support system for the diagnosis of GVHD.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) are rare solid pancreatic tumors mainly affecting young women. Despite the high percentage of favorable prognosis, they are considered as low grade malignant neoplasms, and metastases occur in 5%-15% of patients. Almost all SPNs (95%) have somatic activating mutations in the β-catenin gene [1].

Photorefractive keratectomy after cataract surgery in uncommon cases: long-term results

AIM： To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the excimer laser correction of the residual refractive errors after cataract extraction with intraocular lens（IOL） implantation in uncommon ***： Totally 24 patients with high residual refractive error after cataract surgery with IOL implantation were examined. Twenty-two patients had a history of phacoemulsification and IOL implantation, and two had extra-capsular cataract extraction with IOL implantation. Detailed examination of preoperative medical records was done to explain the origin of the post-cataract refractive errors. All patients underwent photorefractire keratectomy（PRK） enhancement. The mean outcome measures were refraction, uncorretted visual acuity（UCVA）, best corrected visual acuity（BCVA） and corneal transparency and follow up ranged from 1 to 8 ***： The principal causes of residual ametropia was inexact IOL calculation in abnormal eyes with high myopia and congenital lens abnormalities, followed by corneal astigmatism both suture induced and preexisting. After cataract surgery and before the laser enhancement the mean spherical equivalent（SE） was-0.56±3 D ranging from-4.62 to ＋2.25 D in high myopic patients, instead it was-1±1.73 D ranging from-3.25 to ＋3.75 D in the astigmatic eyes, with a mean cylinder of-3.75±0 ranging from-3 to ＋5.50 D. After laser refractive surgery the mean SE was 0.1±0.73, ranging from-0.50 to ＋1.50 in the myopic group, and it was-0.50±0.57 ranging from-1.25 to ＋0.50 in astigmatic patients, with a mean cylinder of-0.25±0.75. In myopic patients the mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.038±0.072 logMAR and 0.018±0.04 respectively, both ranging from 0.10 to 0.0. In astigmatic patients, the mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.213±0.132 and 0.00±0.0 respectively, UCVA ranging from 0.50 to 0.22 and BCVA was 0.00. All patients presented normal corneal transparency.
