Religion is a fundamental factor in determining food avoidance, taboos and special regulation with respect to meat. A quarter of the world population is made up Muslims. Muslims have unique dietary requirements and are very keen to uphold the tenets of their religion. This group of consumers is scattered around all countries of the world and have a high purchasing power estimated at US$ 2.1 trillion. In order to tap into this lucrative market, the food industry must understand the Muslim requirements for halal food, particularly meat and meat products. Unlike other consumer groups whose purchasing decision is guided by aspects of lifestyle, culture, diet and health concerns, the purchasing decision of Muslims is normally guided by the halal status of the meat. Many Muslims may check for the halal logo of the product before even checking the expiry date. Although the halal status of meat is often believed to be equivalent to the application of halal slaughter, practically it is much more than that. The production of halal meat consists of many critical control points from farm to table in order to ensure that the meat is produced in the acceptable manner and there is no cross contamination with non-halal materials at all unit operations. Unfortunately, the food industry is often unaware of the requirements of the Muslim consumer or often indulges in adulteration for monetary benefits. Halal certifying authorities need robust analytical techniques in areas where fraud is most likely to occur. This paper sets out to highlight the requirements of the halal food chain as well as give an overview of the methods used to authenticate halal meat products.

Absence of postzygotic isolating mechanisms:evidence from experimental hybridization between two species of tropical sea urchins

Two reef margin species of tropical sea urchins,Echinometra sp.C(Ec) and Echinometra oblonga(Eo),occur sympatrically on Okinawa intertidal reefs in southern *** between these species was examined through a series of cross-fertilization *** limited sperm concentrations,where conspecific crosses reached near 100% fertilization,both heterospecific crosses showed high fertilization rates(81%-85%).The compatibility of the gametes demonstrated that if gamete recognition molecules are involved in fertilization of these species,they are not strongly *** found that conspecific crosses reached peak fertilization levels much faster than did heterospecific crosses,indicating the presence of a prezygotic barrier to hybridization in the *** survival,metamorphosis,and juvenile and adult survival of hybrid groups were nearly identical to those of their parent *** from crosses in both directions developed normally through larval stages to sexually mature adults,indicating that neither gametic incompatibility nor hybrid inviability appeared to maintain reproductive isolation between these *** adults,Ec×Ec crosses gave the highest live weight,followed by Eo(ova)×Ec(sperm),Ec(ova)×Eo(sperm),and Eo×*** growth performance measures(viz.,test size,Aristotle's lantern length,and gonad index) of hybrid groups and their parental siblings showed the same *** phenotypic color patterns of the hybrids were closer to the maternal coloration,whereas spine length,tube-foot and gonad spicule characteristics,pedicellaria valve length,and gamete sizes showed intermediate *** F 1 hybrids were completely fertile and displayed high fertilization success in F 1 backcrosses,eliminating the likelihood that hybrid sterility is a postzygotic mechanism of reproductive ***,intensive surveys failed to find hybrid individuals in the field,suggesting the lack or rarity of natural *** stron

Polymerase Chain Reaction-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) Profile of bacterial Community from Agricultural Soils in bauchi, North-East Nigeria

The population dynamics of bacterial community was investigated in three Agricultural soils, designated as Loamy sand (A), Peaty coarse (b) and Loamy coarse sand (C) in North-East, Nigeria. The soil chemical properties were characterized to fully understand their nature. Metagenomic approach was used to extract soil DNA using the fast DNA Spin Kit extraction technique. The PCR-electrophoresed DNA bands were excised and subjected to a full scale Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis. DGGE fingerprinting for the PCR-16S rDNA product revealed a diverse profile of complex population of bacterial community in the study area. The study shows that more bacterial community can be fully investigated using molecular techniques rather than traditional culture method. The implication of the results obtained is discussed.

Carbon micro-and nanoelectrodes fabricated by carbon microelectromechanical systems(carbon MEMS)are increasingly used in various biosensors and supercapacitor *** modification of as-produced carbon electrodes with oxygen functional groups is sometimes necessary for biofunctionalization or to improve electrochemical ***,conventional surface treatment methods have a limited ability for selective targeting of parts of a surface area for surface modification without using complex photoresist ***,we report microplasma direct writing as a simple,low-cost,and low-power technique for site-selective plasma patterning of carbon MEMS electrodes with oxygen *** microplasma direct writing,a high-voltage source generates a microplasma discharge between a microelectrode tip and a target surface held at atmospheric *** our setup,water vapor acts as an ionic precursor for the carboxylation and hydroxylation of carbon surface *** direct writing increases the oxygen content of an SU-8-derived pyrolytic carbon surface from~3 to 27%while reducing the carbon-to-oxygen ratio from 35 to ***,a microplasma treatment increases the number of carbonyl,carboxylic,and hydroxyl functional groups with the largest increase observed for carboxylic ***,water microplasma direct writing improves the hydrophilicity and the electrochemical performance of carbon electrodes with a contact-angle change from~90°to~20°,a reduction in the anodic peak to cathodic peak separation from 0.5 V to 0.17 V,and a 5-fold increase in specific capacitance from 8.82 mF∙cm−2 to 46.64 mF∙cm^(−2).The plasma direct-writing technology provides an efficient and easy-to-implement method for the selective surface functionalization of carbon MEMS electrodes for electrochemical and biosensor applications.

The Relationship between AbO blood Group Type and the COVID-19 Susceptibility in Qatif Central Hospital, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Introduction: It has been found that the viral infection is linked to the AbO blood group. Limited studies investigated the relationship of the AbO blood group and susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. Objective: To investigate the association between the AbO blood group and the COVID-19 susceptibility. Material & Methods: The study is a retrospective cohort study. It included all hospitalized confirmed COVID-19 patients in Qatif central hospital, Eastern province, Saudi Arabia. We included both genders and people who are older than 14 years of age. The study was conducted in the period between 15th March, and 15th April, 2020. Results: Our sample consists of 72 patients;we found a percentage distribution of 23.62%, 33.33%, 9.72%, and 33.33% for blood groups A, b, Ab and O, respectively. Our results showed significantly increased risk for Ab blood groups (P blood group (P bution of the b blood group among COVID-19 patients as compared to the blood donors’ groups, this difference did not reach statistical significance. There was no significant difference in the risk of COVID-19 in blood group A with a distribution of 23.60% in blood donors’ group, and 23.62% in COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that among confirmed COVID-19 patients, patients with Ab blood group have higher susceptibility while patients with O blood group have lower susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. Our study has limitations and further studies are needed.

AIM： To study the frequency, gender and age distribution as well as pathological characteristics of colorectal carcinoma （CRC） in Lagos and Sagamu in SW Nigeria. METHODS： This is a retrospective pathological review of histologically diagnosed CRC from 5 laboratories inLagos ＆ Sagamu. The clinical data, such as age, sex and clinical summary were extracted from demographic information. Cases of anal cancer were excluded from this study. RESULTS： There were 420 cases （237 males and 183 females） of CRC. It peaked in the 60-69 year age group （mean： 50.7; SD： 16.2）, M：F ratio 1.3：1 and 23% occurred below 40 years. The majority was well to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma 321 （76.4%）, rnucinous carcinoma 45 （10.7%） and signet ring carcinoma 5 （1.2%）, and more common in patients under 40 years compared to well differentiated tumors. The recto-sigmoid colon was the most common site （58.6%）. About 51% and 34% of cases presented at TNM stages Ⅱand Ⅲ, respectively. CONCLUSION： CRC is the commonest malignant gastrointestinal （GIT） tumor most commonly located in the recto-sigmoid region. The age and sex prevalence and histopathological features concur with reports from other parts of the world.

In this study,CdS/ZnO(2:3 mol%)thin films are successfully deposited on quartz substrates by using the sputtering *** images on the structural and optical characteristic features of CdS/ZnO thin films before and after annealing are *** CdS/ZnO thin films are annealed respectively at temperatures of 373 K,473 K,and 573 K and the structural features are examined by XRD,ATR-FTIR,and *** optical properties of CdS/ZnO thin films such as refractive indices,absorption coefficients,optical band gap energy values,Urbach energy values,lattice dielectric constants,and high frequency dielectric constants are determined from spectrophotometer data recorded over the spectral range of 300 nm-2500 *** parameters are investigated by using a single-oscillator *** spectra of CdS/ZnO thin films show an overall decrease in their intensity peaks after *** third-order nonlinear optical parameter,and nonlinear refractive index are also estimated.

Objective:To characterise a collection of pili-carrying and none pili-carrying pneumococcal isolates of clinical origin for serotypes,antibiotic resistance and ***:In total,42 clinical isolates were collected between October 2017 and December *** isolates were analysed for antimicrobial susceptibility,serotype distribution,detection of pneumococcal virulence and pilus *** sequence typing was performed only for piliated isolates,followed by phylogenetic ***:The common isolation sites among the pneumococcal isolates were tracheal aspirate(28.6%),blood(26.2%),and sputum(23.8%).Fifty percent isolates were resistant to erythromycin,tetracycline(50.0%)and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(43.0%).The most frequent were serotypes 19F(28.6%),6A/b(23.8%)and 19A(14.3%).Piliated isolates were detected in a small proportion(33.3%);64.3%were ***320 was the prevalent sequence type among the piliated isolates and genetically related to the Pneumococcal Molecular Epidemiology Network clones Taiwan19F-14(CC271).In the phylogenetic analysis,some piliated isolates showed a close association having similar ST320,carrying serotype 19A and both pilus genes indicating their clonal ***:Pneumococcal lineages of piliated isolates have been globally disseminated and pili could have played a role in the spread of antibiotic resistant clones.
