It is the fir.t time tha. the fossil footpr.nts of a.gr.up of Middle Eocene elepha.t a.cestor. ha.e been discover.d in the Gonjo Ba.in,Ea.t Tibet *** Gonjo For.a.ion is a.tr.buted to the Middle Eocene Epoch(U-Pb a.e=44.7±1.2 Ma.a.d consists ma.nly of pur.lish-r.d,medium-to coa.se-gr.0}ned sa.dstones,siltstones inter.edded with mudstones,a.d conglomer.0}es with sedimenta.y str.ctur.s like r.pple ma.ks,r.p-up cla.ts,a.d tr.ugh-cr.ss bedding,suggesting fluvia.-la.ustr.ne *** gr.up of fossil footpr.nts ha. a.cha.a.ter.stic ova.-conca.e sha.e,a.d the toe impr.ssions a.e *** fossil footpr.nts a.e over.tepped with a.pockma.ked textur. r.sembling Pr.boscipeda.*** tha. 165 fossil footpr.nts of the gr.up a.e r.la.ively well-pr.ser.ed with differ.nt dia.eter.,which is evidence of highly socia. beha.ior.a.d tr.0}kma.er. of differ.nt a.es,including ca.ves,juveniles,a.olescents,a.d *** size fr.quency of the fossil footpr.nts ena.led us to deduce the body ma.s,shoulder.height,a.d hip-height distr.bution of the tr.0}kma.er. tha. cr.ssed the Ea.t Tibet Pla.ea. 44.7 Ma.*** tr.0}kma.er. compr.sed a. estima.ed a.er.0}e hip-height of 111.8 cm,a. a.er.0}e shoulder.height of 172.8 cm for.ma.es/155.9 cm for.fema.es,a.d a. a.er.0}e body ma.s of a.pr.xima.ely 1218.1 kg for.ma.es/907.8 kg for.*** a.unda.ce of fossil footpr.nts r.vea.s tha. in the Middle Eocene Epoch,the envir.nment wa. extr.0}r.ina.ily conducive for.the elepha.t a.cestor. to live in the Ea.t Tibet r.gion.
