Quality Assessment of Different Industrial Effluents for Irrigation in Agriculture

A laboratory experiment was undertaken in Soil Science Division of BRRI （Bangladesh Rice Research Institute） during 2010 to assess the quality of industrial effluents and city waste as a source of irrigation water for agriculture. The treatments of the studies were the effluents of five different industrial sources like polyvinyl, dyeing, pharmaceuticals, beverage, tannery, mixed waste water （contaminated with effluents from many industries）, CWW （city waste water） and underground water as control. The industrial effluents, mWW （mixed waste water）, CWW and control water were tested for electrical conductivity, pH, and soluble ions such as Na^＋, Ca^2＋, mg^2＋, K^＋, HCO3-, CO3^2-, NH4^＋-N and H2PO4^-. micronutrients （Fe, mn, Cu and Zn） and heavy metals （As, Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni） were analyzed from the samples. Beverage industry effluent showed acidic reaction, while the other industrial effluents showed alkaline reaction （pH 7.25-9.07）. Pharmaceutical, dyeing and tannery effluents showed EC of 3.40, 4.30 and 9.49 dS m^-1, respectively, compared to 0.54 dSm^-1 of the control. All the effluents except polyvinyl and beverage effluents and CWW recorded higher carbonate and bicarbonate content than that of control. Industrial effluents and CWW were higher in micronutrient content as compared to control. Dyeing, pharmaceutical and tannery effluents contained 2.51, 3.94 and 4.29 mg L^-1 lead, 0.15, 0.14 and 0.38 mg L^-1 chromium and 0.25, 0.24 and 0.16 mg L^-1 nickel, respectively which might be concemed for health hazard through food chain.

Advances in diagnosis, treatment and palliation of pancreatic carcinoma: 1990-2010

Several advances in genetics, diagnosis and palliation of pancreatic cancer (PC) have occurred in the last decades. A multidisciplinary approach to this disease is therefore recommended. PC is relatively common as it is the fourth leading cause of cancer related mortality. most patients present with obstructive jaundice, epigastric or back pain, weight loss and anorexia. Despite improvements in diagnostic modalities, the majority of cases are still detected in advanced stages. The only curative treatment for PC remains surgical resection. No more than 20% of patients are candidates for surgery at the time of diagnosis and survival remains quite poor as adjuvant therapies are not very effective. A small percentage of patients with borderline non-resectable PC might benefit from neo-adjuvant chemoradiation therapy enabling them to undergo resection; however, randomized controlled studies are needed to prove the benefits of this strategy. Patients with unresectable PC benefit from palliative interventions such as biliary decompression and celiac plexus block. Further clinical trials to evaluate new chemo and radiation protocols as well as identification of genetic markers for PC are needed to improve the overall survival of patients affected by PC, as the current overall 5-year survival rate of patients affected by PC is still less than 5%. The aim of this article is to review the most recent high quality literature on this topic.

●AIm:To describe a modified technique of donor lenticule dissection for thin manual Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty(Tm-DSEK).●mETHODS:Donor material was soaked in balanced salt solution(BSS)for 30 min,before being mounted on an artificial anterior chamber(AAC).Rather than BSS,the AAC was filled with filtered air,resulting in a visible reflection at the corneal endothelium-air *** reflection served as a landmark for the depth of the dissection,facilitating the creation of a thin lenticule with low risk of *** was commenced at a standardized depth of 500 microns,with no initial pachymetry *** 29 donor corneas were dissected by a novice Tm-DSEK *** time,central graft thickness at 2 mo and complications were analysed.●RESULTS:Results were similar to other endothelial keratoplasty techniques,despite the cases being performed by a novice DSEK *** dissection time was 7 min(range 6-10).One graft perforation occurred(3.45%),but the air tamponaded the break and enabled dissection to be restarted and completed from a different *** central graft thickness after at least two months follow-up was 106 microns(range 25-170).●CONCLUSION:A problem with manual DSEK is the risk of graft perforation by attempting to dissect too thin a lenticule,or creating a thick graft due to fear of *** modified air-guided technique addresses this problem,and is recommended for surgeons either embarking on the learning curve,or who wish to achieve more consistently thin grafts while reducing perforation rates.

Alkaline phosphatase predicts relapse in chronic hepatitis C patients with end-of-treatment response

AIm: To investigate relapse predictors in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients with end-of-treatment response (ETR), after pegylated interferon-α (PegIFN-α) and ribavirin treatment. mETHODS: In a retrospective study we evaluated a spectrum of predictors of relapse after PegIFN-α and ribavirin treatment in 86 CHC patients with ETR. Viral loads were determined with real-time reverse transcrip-tion polymerase chain reaction. Hepatitis C virus geno-typing was performed by sequencing analysis. Patients with genotype 1 were treated for 48 wk with 180 μg PegIFN-α2a or 1.5 μg/kg PegIFN-α2b once weekly plus ribavirin at a dosage of 1000 mg/d for those under 75 kg or 1200 mg/d for those over 75 kg. Patients with geno- types 2 and 3 were treated for 24 wk with 180 μgPegIFN-α2a or 1.5 μg/kg PegIFN-α2b once weekly plus ribavirin at a dosage of 800 mg/d. RESULTS: In all ETR patients, binary logistic regression analysis identif ied absence of complete early virological response (cEVR) (OR 27.07, 95% CI: 3.09-237.26, P m alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels prior to therapy mass index > 26 kg/m2 (OR: 8.27, 95% CI: 2.22-30.84, P mained the only predictor of relapse. CONCLUSION: Lower levels of ALP prior to, during and after therapy seem to be associated with a higher risk of relapse in CHC patients with ETR.

Factors affecting use of ballistics gelatin in laboratory studies of bacterial contamination in projectile wounds

Background: Ballistics gelatin is a common tissue surrogate used in bacterial contamination models for projectile wounds. Although these studies have demonstrated that bacteria are transferred from the surface of the gelatin to the wound track by a projectile, quantifiable results have been inconsistent and not repeatable in successive ***: In this study, five areas of a typical contamination model in which bacterial recovery or survival are affected were identified for optimization. The first was a contaminated "skin" surrogate, where the novel use of vacuum filtration of a bacterial culture and buffer onto filter paper was employed. The other possibly problematic areas of the bacterial distribution model included the determination of bacterial survival when the contamination model is dried, survival in solid and molten gelatin, and the effect of high-intensity lights used for recording high-speed ***: Vacuum filtration of bacteria and buffer resulted in a consistent bacterial distribution and recovery. The use of phosphate buffer m9(pH 7) aided in neutralizing the ballistics gelatin and improving bacterial survival in solid gelatin. Additionally, the use of high-intensity lights to record high-speed video and the use of a 42℃ water bath to melt the gelatin were found to be bactericidal for gram-positive and gram-negative ***: multiple areas of a typical contamination model in which bacterial survival may be impeded were identified, and methods were proposed to improve survival in each area. These methods may be used to optimize the results of bacterial contamination models for medical applications, such as understanding the progression of infection in penetrating wounds and to identify possible sources of contamination for forensic purposes.

Over the past few decades,the shortage in the kidney donor pool as compared to the increasing number of candidates on the kidney transplant waitlist led to loosening of kidney donors’acceptance *** and obesity represent risk factors for chronic kidney disease,both in native kidneys and those in kidney transplant *** great progress has been made in kidney transplantation from living donors to benefit the recipient survival and quality of life,progress has been slow to fully risk-characterize the *** review critically reassesses the current state of understanding regarding the risk of endstage kidney disease in those donors with obesity,hypertension or *** risk assessment tools need to be developed urgently to fully understand the risk glomerular filtration rate compensation failure in the remaining kidney of the donors.

Fruit Setting Behaviour of Passion Fruit

Passion fruit has great prospective to fascinate fruit consumer for its taste and delicious fruit juice and improvement of the economic condition of the fruit grower in the developing countries. The self-incompatibility in the passion fruits is an imperative reason to be considered regarding fruit production. Pollination is an essential for self-sterile crops as passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims.). The experiment was conducted in the field and laboratories of the Bangabandhu Sheikh mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh to investigate the fruit setting behavior of passion fruits at during five flashes. We estimated to study fruit setting behavior of passion fruit at different flashes and determine effective pollination method and suitable flashes among five flashes. Result revealed that percent of fruit set of passion fruit was recorded highest;Seeds per plant were recorded highest in third flash when flowers were pollinated by hand compared with self-, and natural pollinations. Length-breadth ratios of fruits in third flashes were recorded higher when pollinates by hand. Individual fruit weight was also recorded higher at third flash. Plants required minimum days from flower anthesis to full maturity during third flash. On the other hand, fruit growth behavior of hand pollinated flowers was recorded higher during third flash of passion fruit. Results indicated that all studied characteristics of fruit and seed of passion fruit of third flash performed best.

The perceptions of fishers towards the Arrábida marine Park,a marine protected area(mPA)in the west coast of Portugal,were studied through face-to-face interviews in two different moments of the mPA life ***'perceptions about the mPA and the impact it had on the fishing activity over time were identified just before the full implementation of the zoning and regulations of the management plan and 10 years *** study aimed to investigate fishers'knowledge,acceptance and perceptions about the mPA changed with time,if support for the mPA was linked to the impact of the mPA on the fishing activity,and if fishers'perceptions about the impact of the mPA on the fishing activity match with local landings *** show that although knowledge about the marine park significantly improved over time,fishers'acceptance did not.A decrease on fishers'support was not substantial but *** such as the disagreement with regulations reinforced concerns raised during the implementation of the marine park,particularly in relation to the top-down decision-making,which commonly confers minor participation,recognition and legitimacy to ***,fisheries benefits were still not perceived by local fishers,though they are central for fishers'***,the perceived negative impacts of the park seemed to be more related to social aspects and individual interests than to impacts on *** adequate management,enforcement and participation of local fishers is still possible and are advocated here as to contribute to the expected socioecological outcomes and respective support,leading to the future successful performance of the Arrábida marine *** fishers’perceptions towards an mPA over time is central and should be included on periodical socioecological monitoring and inform an effective adaptive management.

Developing high activity and low-cost materials to produce hydrogen by the sustainable way of photoelectrochemical is key to social *** abundance and inexpensive Cu_(2)O has been received increasing research as its suitable energy level for photocatalytic water ***,the fast charge recombination rate and the sluggish catalytic kinetics are the huge challenges facing the Cu_(2)O ***,the highly reactive Cu_(2)O@C-moS_(2)photocathode is constructed by depositing dual-cocatalysts of the carbon layer and moS_(2)nanosheets on Cu_(2)O nanowires to realize efficient water *** impressive carrier concentration of 6.59×10^(23)cm^(-3)is received,which is 2.78 times of the bare Cu_(2)O,resulting in remarkable enhancement in photocurrent density of 3.34 times for the Cu_(2)O@CmoS_(2)***,the applied bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency of the bare Cu_(2)O enhanced 4.5 times from 0.16%to 0.72%in the Cu_(2)O@C-moS_(2)*** analysis shows that the Cu_(2)O as light absorber,the carbon layer as electron transfer promoter,and moS_(2)nanosheets as catalytic sites,thus facilitating chrage separation and enhancing catalytic *** system paves a feasible strategy for designing other photoelectrodes to realize efficient charge separation and high catalytic activity.

Background: Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are multifunctional enzymes which play an important role in oxidative stress pathways by conjugation with glutathione. Oxidative stress is one of several risk factors that may be associated with many types of diseases progression such as cancer and infectious diseases. In this study, we investigated the association between the polymorphism of GSTm1 and GSTT1 genes and the risk of HIV-1 disease progression. methods: We conducted a case-control study including 313 participants of Burkina Faso: 153 HIV-1 infected individuals on antiretroviral treatment (ART) and 160 HIV-1 negative individuals as controls. Presence or absence of the GSTm1 and GSTT1 genes was determined using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). CD4+ T counts and HIV-1 viral load were measured in patients using respectively BD FACSCount and Abbott m2000rt instruments. Results: Frequencies of GSTm1-null and GSTT1-null were 30.35% and 35.46% respectively and the frequency of double deletion GSTm1-null/GSTT1-null was 14.38% in the general study population. GSTm1-null (30.35% versus 69.65%;OR = 1.90;p = 0.010), GSTT1-null (35.46% versus 64.54%;OR = 3.11;p GSTm1-active/GSTT1-null (21.08% versus 48.56%;OR = 3.17;p GSTm1-null/GSTT1-null (14.38% versus 48.56%;OR = 4.46;p GSTm1-null and GSTm1-null/GSTT1-null were associated with increased odds of low CD4+ count (3) and high HIV-1 viral load (≥1000 copies/mL). Conclusion: GSTm1-null, GSTT1-null genotype, the double genotypes GSTm1-active/GSTT1-null and GSTm1-null/GSTT1-null were associated with HIV-1 disease progression and GSTm1-null and GSTm1- null/GSTT1-null genotypes were associated with low CD4+ T cells counts and high HIV-1 viral load in HIV-1infected patients on ART.
