Educational Experiences of Undergraduate Male Nursing Students: A Focus Group Study

Background: The educational experiences of undergraduate male nursing students in developing countries such as Jordan have yet to be fully investigated in the literature. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the educational experiences of Jordanian undergraduate male nursing students. Methods: A qualitative research design using inductive content analysis approach was used to explore educational experiences of undergraduate male nursing students at a prominent public university. Focus group interviews were used to obtain information of an interactive, conversational nature from male nursing students and to gain in-depth insight regarding their educational experiences. Twenty undergraduate male nursing participants representing the four academic levels of a nursing program were recruited. Four focus groups ranging between 4 - 6 students were used to gather data. Inductive content analysis was used. Results: Three themes emerged from this study: “nursing: a deliberate choice”, “nursing is wonderful yet challenging”, and “nursing is not for men”. Students articulated that they deliberately chose to study nursing and to enter this academic field. Participants indicated that studying nursing was a wonderful experience that was intertwined with several challenges. Students from different levels explicitly emphasized that they were challenged and bombarded with enduring negative stereotypes and negative societal views regarding males in nursing. Conclusions and Implications: Findings illustrated that educational experiences of undergraduate male nursing students varied between wonderful experiences upon deliberate entry into nursing programs to enduring negative stereotypes and views regarding male nurses. Nursing educators are expected to comprehend the educational experiences of their students, particularly male students, and provide counseling, role-modeling and support as needed. Dynamic Model for Evaluation of Risk Factors During Work in Hot Environment

Mathematical model is developed for prediction of physiological changes in man during work in hot environment taking into consideration intensity of work, clothing and environment. To evaluate human functional state the heat stress index was calculated. Modeling researches made the conclusion that the main risk factor during work in hot environment is water losses that happens through thermoregulatory sweat evaporation. Modeling showed that in humid environment man wearing protective clothing has short time to work as water losses became more than 2% of human weight that means body dehydration. Preliminary model prediction can be used as preventive method to avoid hazard of human health.

Invasive Weed Mapping of Lebanon

Surveying and early detection of invasive weeds are essential for strategic management and monitoring. Accordingly, a weed mapping was conducted during July 2011, against native （Orobanche ramosa, Cuscuta spp., Sorghum halepense and Xanthium strumarium） and non native （Abutilon theophrasti, Datura stramonium, Solanum elaeagnifolium and Verbesina encelioide） weeds of Lebanon. A global positioning system （Garmin 2006） was used for precise waypoint, elevation, navigation and distance. The result of interviewing and interacting with the residents in 95 villages distributed between the Beq＇aa and the North governorates of Lebanon, along with the observations made on the route, yielded the first detection of Abutilon theophrasti in both governorates. Solanum elaeagnifolium and Verbesina encelioide were not found in the agro-ecosystems of either governorates. This is the first report of the introduction ofAbutilon theophrasti in Lebanon and the establishment of a baseline data on weeds of Lebanon. The adoption of an integrated weed management program with a quarantine and control techniques and methods is needed to manage the spreading of weeds and to lessen their ability to adapt to a constantly changing system which uses several control practices.

miR-137 inhibits melanoma cell proliferation through downregulation of GLO1

Late-stage melanoma is refractory to current therapies. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can modulate many physiological and pathological processes of melanoma. Studies have demonstrated that miR-137 acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting the proliferation of melanoma cells through targeting multiple mRNAs. The glyoxalase system member glyoxalase 1 (GLO1) is the principal scavenging enzyme of methylglyoxal (MG), a toxic byproduct of glycolysis. Using 35S in vivo/vitro labelling analysis for dynamic proteomics (SiLAD), we found that miR-137 downregulated the expression of GLO1 in melanoma *** analysis predicted that GLO1 is a direct target of miR-137. This was validated by dual luciferase reporter *** RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blot analysis indicated that miR-137 could decrease endogenous GLO1 ***, siRNA targeting of GLO1 mimicked inhibition of melanoma cell proliferation caused by miR-137 ***-expression of GLO1 was able to restore miR-137-mediated suppression of melanoma cell proliferation. Therefore, these results suggest that miR-137 inhibits the proliferation of melanoma cells by targeting GLO1.

Intelligent System of M-Vision Based on Optimized SIFT

This paper proposes the recognition of bank notes through a mobile intelligent vision system under Android and this, based on an approach of artificial vision of images using the SIFT algorithm under OPENCV whose principle is to detect the remarkable points of this image and compare it with the image saved in the local database on a handheld device. Finally, the system informs the user of the result by a sound indicating the value of the currency detected. The SIFT algorithm proposed can achieve a higher percentage of identification in a reduced time compared to results achieved by classic SIFT.

Optimised Migrate Virtual Machine Rejuvenation

Server virtualization is an essential component in virtualized software infrastructure such as cloud computing. Virtual machines are generated through a software called virtual machine monitor (VMM) running on physical servers. The risks of software aging caused by aging-related bugs affect both VM and VMM. As a result, service reliability degrades may generate huge financial losses to companies. This paper presents an analytic model using stochastic reward nets for time-based rejuvenation techniques of VMM and VM. We propose to manipulate the VM behavior while the VMM rejuvenation is according to the load on the system. Using a previous Petri net model of virtualized server, we performed an algorithm in order to optimize rejuvenation technique and achieve high availability. So we perform Migrate-VM rejuvenation or Warm-VM rejuvenation while there are current jobs in the system. Although Migrate-VM rejuvenation is better than Warm-VM rejuvenation in steady state availability, it can’t be always performed as it depends on the capacity of the other host. When the queue is empty and the virtual machine has no current jobs to serve, we propose to combine both VMM rejuvenation and VM rejuvenation. We show that the proposed technique can enhance the availability of VMs.

Effect of Saline Water Application through Different Irrigation Intervals on Tomato Yield and Soil Properties

A field study was conducted on the experimental farm of ministry of agriculture, located at Palestine Technical University-Kadoorie, to investigate the effects of saline water irrigation through three irrigation intervals on yield of tomato crop and soil properties. The land was prepared and divided into 12 treatments, each of 48 square meters on the first of April. Tomato seedlings were planted on 25 April 2010;the seedlings were irrigated with fresh water for a period of 10 days after planting. Three levels of saline water irrigation (3, 5, 7 dS/m) plus fresh water as control were applied during the growing season. The four irrigation water treatments were applied through three irrigation intervals (every day, every second day and every three days). Gravimetric soil moisture content and soil electrical conductivity were monitored every two weeks during the growing period. Yield measurements were taken for total fruit yield, marketable yield as a percent of total yield, and average fruit weight of each treatment. Results of this study indicated that, plant treatments irrigated with saline water gave the highest yield for treatments irrigated every day compared to the treatments irrigated every second day and every three days. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in yield reduction between every second day and every three days irrigation intervals under 5 and 7 dS/m saline irrigation levels, while there was no significant difference between irrigation intervals under 3 dS/m salinity level.

中国自实行改革开放以来,经济保持高速发展,中国外汇储备大量增加,中国政府积极鼓励中国的企业“走出去”,在2013年,中国领导人习近平主席在出席活动中提出:“重建21世纪新丝绸之路”的建议,得到了很多国家的响应和支持。在2015年中国政府开始正式推广“一带一路”的发展倡议,在“一带一路”的发展倡议中,基础建设的互通属于一项开创性的发展,在沿线在各个国家存在基础设施需求的,中国政府都会给予一定资金帮扶,并相应地成立亚洲基础设施投资银行、银行及丝路基金等。中东地区作为亚洲、欧洲非和非洲三大洲的交通枢纽,在中国推广的“一路一带”发展倡议中,中东国家均属于沿线的重要节点。在中东国家中,沙特阿拉伯属于经济最为发达的国家,因此中国资本在最近几年提高了对于沙特阿拉伯在基础设施上了投资,因此在国际直接投资中,最迫切要了解的就是国际投资的风险。文章结合一带一路背景,研究了中国在沙特重大基础设施项目的风险防范机制问题,首先阐述“一带一路”倡议对中国与沙特关系的影响,之后分析沙特阿拉伯的投资环境,包括外资政策分析,指出沙特阿拉伯投资环境情况,指出其目前吸引国际直接投资政策分析及国际直接投资的风险分析,之后分析中国对沙特国际直接投资分析,从总体规模、行业分布及区域分布进行分析,介绍了中国在沙特重大基础设施项目的实施情况,同时分析了当前中国建筑企业在沙特建设过程中面临的合同风险、工程变更风险、社会文化风险、汇率风险和政治风险等多种影响因素。采用模糊层次综合评价法,对项目总体风险和具体风险进行了评价。针对这些风险,笔者对于中国建筑企业从合同风险、工程变更风险、社会文化风险、汇率风险和政治风险等方面提出防范的机制措施。

Privacy-Preserving Healthcare System for Clinical Decision-Support and Emergency Call Systems

Healthcare centers always aim to deliver the best quality healthcare services to patients and earn their satisfaction. Technology has played a major role in achieving these goals, such as clinical decision-support systems and mobile health social networks. These systems have improved the quality of care services by speeding-up the diagnosis process with accuracy, and allowing caregivers to monitor patients remotely through the use of WBS, respectively. However, these systems’ accuracy and efficiency are dependent on patients’ health information, which must be inevitably shared over the network, thus exposing them to cyber-attacks. Therefore, privacy-preserving services are ought to be employed to protect patients’ privacy. In this work, we proposed a privacy-preserving healthcare system, which is composed of two subsystems. The first is a privacy-preserving clinical decision-support system. The second subsystem is a privacy-preserving Mobile Health Social Network (MHSN). The former was based on decision tree classifier that is used to diagnose patients with new symptoms without disclosing patients’ records. Whereas the latter would allow physicians to monitor patients’ current condition remotely through WBS;thus sending help immediately in case of a distress situation detected. The social network, which connects patients of similar symptoms together, would also provide the service of seeking help of near-by passing people while the patient is waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Our model is expected to improve healthcare services while protecting patients’ privacy.
