Artificial reproduction of neotropical fish:Extrusion or natural spawning?

In captive conditions, most neotropical migratory species do not have the necessary incentive to complete gonadal maturation and spawning, which require induction techniques, usually with the use of hormones. Numerous studies have therefore focused on finding an effective hormonal treatment to induce reproduction for each species. A standard treatment was successfully developed for most of these species, which consists of two doses of Carp Pituitary Extract (CPE), totaling 5.5 mgCPE/kg of fish. However, the best strategy for the subsequent fertilization of gametes is still unclear. This study was conducted with five species of commercial interest that do not reproduce naturally in captivity: pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus, piracanjuba Brycon orbignyanus, curimbatá Prochilodus lineatus, dourado Salminus brasiliensis and piau?u Leporinus macrocephalus. Ninety-nine broodstocks were used, consisting of males and females of the five species to compare two techniques for spawning and fertilization: extrusion followed by the dry method and natural spawning. All fish were induced with two hormone doses, i.e., 0.5 and 5.0 mgCPE/kg, and were subjected to one of the two types of fertilization. The results were compared using the fertilization rate, number of oocytes produced, relative fecundity and the broodstocks' survival rate on days following spawning. All species responded positively to spawning for extrusion, and only S. brasiliensis did not spawn through the natural spawning method. The natural spawning technique provided a higher fertilization rate of eggs and a greater broodstock survival rate (P S. brasiliensis. It was concluded that the natural spawning technique can increase the production of viable eggs and reduce the mortality of species during breeding, except for S. brasiliensis.

Anticonvulsant, Sedative and Antidepressant Effects of Aqueous Extract of Costus afer Stems in Mice

Epilepsy is a disorder in the nervous system which often causes a loss of consciousness. Traditional treatments are quiet a component of health care system in various populations in spite of the fact that well-established options are available. Most plants are used to treat epilepsy or those which have been verified for anticonvulsant activity were reported. Then, Costus afer is a plant of the Congolese flora used in traditional medicine for its many virtues. Therefore, the anticonvulsant activity of Costus afer was assessed with the strychnine convulsion induction test. Two tests were used for sedative activity such as the barbiturate sleep induction test and motor activity and finally the forced swimming test was also used to assess antidepressant activity. The results showed that the aqueous extract of Costus afer stems had no effects on strychnine-induced seizures at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg compared to the control group. However, the extract of Costus afer stems caused a very significant decrease in motricity at a dose of 500 mg/kg, showing a decrease in the onset time and a very significant increase in sleep duration like the reference molecule such as Diazepam. The aqueous extract of Costus afer stems also caused a decrease in immobility time in mice at a dose of 500 mg/kg.

The construction sector has always been constantly changing, becoming increasingly aggressive, requiring new strategies to adapt to international and national scenarios. In the development of a project, there are many constraints, which often end up in problems such as waste materials, generating waste affecting the environment and also resulting in high costs oftbe work that could be avoided. Then came the concept of BIM （building information modeling） defined by a digital model consists of a database, allowing the development of projects with various professionals working in an integrated manner, being able to support all aspects of the life cycle of the project. Therefore, from the research information on the implementation of BIM methodology, it was possible to propose new ways of thinking and designing buildings, contributing to the completion of research in the management of projects and sustainability areas relevant to the development of engineering.

Do Pregnant Teens Have Higher Risk of Intimate Partner Violence than Pregnant Adult Women in Mexico?

Objective: The objective of the study is to estimate the prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and identify factors linked to it in pregnant Mexican adult and adolescent women. Methods: Data were gathered by the National Survey of Violence against Women (2006), applied to women between the ages 15-49, users of Mexican public health institutions. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the significant factors associated with IPV against pregnant women. Results: Both adolescent and adult study participating women showed a 24% prevalence of current IPV (during the previous 12 months). The study’s multivariate model for adult women revealed the following as main predictors for IPV: a woman’s agreement with traditional gender roles (OR = 4.35, CI95% = 2.20 - 8.60), and women with a history of childhood sexual abuse (OR = 2.76, CI95% = 1.68 - 4.55). The main predictor of IPV in pregnant adolescents was their partners’ frequency of alcohol consumption: often/usually (OR = 6.49, CI95% = 2.18 - 19.33). Conclusion: To this date, Mexico has not been able to guarantee universal screening methods for IPV as a part of prenatal care protocols. The phenomenon of IPV towards pregnant women neither has been followed-up by further research nor has been identified as a public health problem in spite of the seriousness of its implications for women and their offspring.

Red Rice Control and Soybean Tolerance to <i>S</i>-Metolachlor in Association with Glyphosate

Red rice is one of the major troublesome and difficult weeds to control in rice production regions. The introduction of the Clearfield® technology allowed producers to control red rice using rice genotypes tolerant to the imidazolinone herbicides. However, because the consecutive use of this technology red rice biotypes have evolved resistance to imidazolinone herbicides, the rice-soybean rotation has been an alternative used by producers to control this weed. This system allows the use of herbicides with different modes of action to control red rice, such as S-metolachlor. Thus, greenhouse and field experiments were carried out during the 2011 to 2012 and 2012 to 2013 growing seasons to evaluate: 1) sensitivity of imidazolinone-resistant red rice to S-metolachlor;2) red rice control and soybean tolerance in response to associations of S-metolachlor and glyphosate. In greenhouse, S-metolachlor effectively controlled both susceptible and imidazolinone-resistant red rice in preemergence. In field, preemergence applications of S-metolachlor provided greater red rice control in comparison to S-metolachlor alone in early postemergence. The association of S-metolachlor with glyphosate did not improve red rice control in preemergence application. However, association of S-metolachlor with glyphosate significantly improved red rice control in early postemergence applications. S-metolachlor injury to soybean increased with early postemergence applications. These results indicate that S-metolachlor effectively control imidazolinone-resistant red rice in rice-soybean rotation.

Pramipexole, a dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist, attenuates reserpine-induced fibromyalgia-like model in mice

Fibromyalgia(FM) is a complex pathology described as persistent hyperalgesia including somatic and mood dysfunctions, depression and anxiety. Although the etiology of FM is still unknown, a significant decrease in biogenic amines is a common characteristic in its pathogenesis. Here, our main objective was to investigate the role of dopamine D3/D2 receptor during the reserpine-induced pain in mice. Our results showed that pramipexole(PPX) – a dopaminergic D3/D2 receptor agonist – inhibited mechanical allodynia and thermal sensitivity induced by reserpine. Relevantly, PPX treatment decreased immobility time and increased the number of grooming in the forced swimming test and splash test, respectively. Animals that received PPX remained longer in the open arms than the reserpine group using elevated plusmaze apparatus. The repeated PPX administration, given daily for 4 days, significantly blocked the mechanical and thermal allodynia during FM model, similarly to pregabalin, although it failed to affect the reserpine-induced thermal nociception. Reserpine administration induced significant downregulation of dopamine concentration in the central nervous system, and repeated treatment with PPX restored dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and spinal cord tissues. Moreover, PPX treatment inhibited oxidants production such as DCFH(2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein) and nitrite, also decreased oxidative damage(carbonyl), and upregulated the activity of superoxide dismutase in the spinal cord. Together, our findings demonstrated the ability of dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist in reducing pain and mood dysfunction allied to FM in mice. All experimental protocols were approved by the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina(UFSC) Ethics Committee(approval No. 2572210218) on May 10, 2018.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Tomato (<i>Solanum lycopersicum</i>) Germplasm Developed by Texas A&M Breeding Programs

Genetic variation developed in plant breeding programs is fundamental to creating new combinations that result in cultivars with enhanced characteristics. Over the years, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) breeding programs associated with the Texas A&M University system have developed morphologically diverse lines of tomatoes selected for heat tolerance, fruit quality, and disease resistance to adapt them to Texas growing conditions. Here we explored the intraspecific genetic variations of 322 cultivated tomato genotypes, including 300 breeding lines developed by three Texas A&M breeding programs, as an initial step toward implementing molecular breeding approaches. Genotyping by sequencing using low coverage whole-genome sequencing (SkimGBS) identified 10,236 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were used to assess genetic diversity, population structure, and phylogenetic relationship between genotypes and breeding programs. Model-based population structure analysis, phylogenetic tree construction, and principal component analysis indicated that the genotypes were grouped into two main clusters. Genetic distance analysis revealed greater genetic diversity? among the products of the three breeding programs. The germplasm developed at Texas A&M programs at Weslaco, College Station, and by Dr. Paul Leeper exhibited genetic diversity ranges of 0.175 - 0.434, 0.099 - 0.392, and 0.183 - 0.347, respectively, suggesting that there is enough variation within and between the lines from the three programs to perform selection for cultivar development. The SNPs identified here could be used to develop molecular tools for selecting various traits of interest and to select parents for future tomato breeding.

Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis of Toxic Metals in Fish Tissues

The concentration of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Hg and Pb, considered like toxic, was evaluated in fish tissues by means the total reflection X-Ray Fluorescence technique (TXRF). Grass carp (Ctenopharygodon idella) samples were collected from six regions of the Tepuxtepec Dam which was used as a water reservoir and fish production for the local population. Fish tissues: gills, liver, kidney and muscle were analyzed in triplicate using a TXRF spectrometer “TX-2000 Ital Structures” with a Si(Li) detector and a resolution of 140 eV (FWHM) at Mn Kα and Mo tube (40 kV, 30 mA) with 17.4 KeV excitation energy. The mean concentration of metals in tissues decrease in the sequence: Kidney ≈ Gills > Liver > Muscle;the range of concentration for Zn was 26.68 - 816.67 mg/Kg followed by Cu: 1.18 - 35.81 mg/Kg, Cr: 1.10 - 9.30 mg/Kg, Ni: 0.40 - 3.80 mg/Kg, Pb: <0.02 - 1.92 mg/Kg and Hg: <0.03 - 1.97 mg/Kg. Chromium and mercury concentrations slightly exceed the limits for fish proposed by FAO/WHO and Mexican Legislation for human consumption in the edible parts of fish from each one of the regions of the Tepuxtepec Dam. The results show that metal accumulation in herbivorous carp tissues was higher in regions 1, 2 and 3 than the others, which could be due to the influence of Lerma River, one of the most polluted rivers of Mexico.
