This study investigates the relationship between the hotspot-ridge interaction and the formation of oceanic plateaus and seamounts in the Southwest Indian *** first calculated the relative distance between the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and relevant hotspots on the basis of models of plate reconstruction,and then calculated the corresponding excess magmatic anomalies of the hotspots on the basis of residual bathymetry and Airy *** results reveal that the activities of the Marion hotspot can be divided into three main phases:interaction with the paleo-Rodrigues triple junction (73.6-68.5.Ma),interaction with the SWIR (68.5.42.7 Ma),and intra-plate volcanism (42.7-0 Ma).These three phases correspond to the formation of the eastern,central,and western parts of the Del Cano Rise,*** magnitude and apparent periodicity of the magmatic volume flux of the Marion hotspot appear to be dominated by the hotspot-ridge *** periodicity of the Marion hotspot is about 25.Ma,which is much longer than that of the Hawaii and Iceland hotspots (about 15.Ma).

This paper deals with the geographic distribution and geological setting of the Jehol (northeastHebei-southwest Liaoning-southeast Inner Mongolia) fauna, and discusses the origination and the evolution ofits major biological groups. It is demonstrated that the Yan-Liao (northern Hebei-western Liaoning) area is theprovenance for the fauna. Why the fauna originated and developed in the area was intimately related to suchfactors as the palaeoclimate, palaeogeography, crustal movement, volcanism and frequent reversals of magnet-ic polarity at that time, in addition to the internal factors of the organisms themselves.

Anti-slide pile and anchoring hole are two types of reinforcement techniques popularly used in slope reinforcement. However, some defects of these two techniques are found in slope engineering practices. Utilizing higher tensile strength of pre-stressed structures, the authors devise two new types of slope reinforcement techniques, i.e. pre-stressed anchoring beam and pre-stressed anti-slide pile, in an attempt to overcome those defects of the existing techniques. These two new techniques are characterized by gathering multiple functions, e.g. engineering investigation, reinforcement, drainage, monitoring and strength supplement, so as to achieve high reinforcement efficiency, convenient checking, and higher ratio of function to cost. It is hoped that, if applying these two new techniques in remedies of landslide hazards along the Chengdu-Lhasa Highway, better reinforcement effects will be obtained.

Basin-fill sequences of Mesozoic typical basins in the Yanshan area, North china may be divided into four phases, reflecting lithosphere tectonic evolution from flexure (T3), flexure with weak rifting (J1+2), tectonic transition (J3), and rifting (K). Except the first phase, the other three phases all start with lava and volcaniclastic rocks, and end with thick coarse clastic rocks and/or conglomerates, showing cyclic basin development rather than simple cyclic rift mechanism and disciplinary basin-stress change from extension to compression in each phase. Prototype basin analysis, based on basin-fill sequences, paleocurrent distribution and depositional systems, shows that single basin-strike and structural-line direction controlling basin development had evidently changed from east-west to northeast in Late Jurassic in the Yanshan area, although basin group still occurred in east-west zonal distribution. Till Early Cretaceous, main structural-line strike controlling basins just turned to northeast by north in the studied area.

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are of interest in microbiology, biomineralization, advanced magnetic materials, and bio-geo-sciences because of their ability to form highly ordered intracellular magnetic minerals. Great strides for MTB studies have been made in the past four decades. In this paper we complied the first internet-accessible database for MTB, Database of Magnestotactic Bacteria (DMTB). It contains information of 16S rRNA gene sequences, corresponding ecological metadata, oligonucleotides, and magnetic properties of MTB. The comprehensive information contained in DMTB will provide a very useful data resource for researchers from different disciplines. The website of DMTB is at http://***/.

Cold Thermal Anomalous Structure within Lower Mantle and Its Geodynamic Implications

The lateral temperature anomalous structure of the lower mantle is reconstructed from the seismic tomographical model and high temperature and high pressure laboratory results. A significant correlation between the distribution of the cold anomaly and the location of past subduction belts shows that the shallower anomaly corresponds to the younger subduction sites, while the deeper anomaly to the older ones. This correlation also suggests that the cold anomaly may have come from the subduction slabs and the scale of mantle convection may have been completed. The coldest and largest anomaly is concentrated near the core mantle boundary (CMB). Few cold anomalies float in the shallower and middle parts of the lower mantle, suggesting that the downward migration of the subduction slabs, discontinuous and step like, may be divided into the following three stages: subduction, stagnation at the 670 km discontinuity due to the phase transition, and disintegration when the size exceeds the critical point.

In this study, grain-size of 5.7 bulk samples from the QA-I Mioceneloess-soil sequence at Qinan were analyzed, and the grain-size features are compared with those oftypical Quaternary loess and soil samples, representative lacustrine and fluvial samples. Theresults indicate that the grain-size distribution pattern of the Miocene loess is essentiallysimilar to that of Quaternary loess, but greatly differs from the lacustrine and fluvial *** layers are regularly coarser than soil layers, indicating cyclical climate changes. Mediangrain-size along the 25..1 m sequence varies from 6 to 13 μm and the > 63 μm fraction representsonly 5.3% in maximum, 0.9% in average. Long-term grain-size variations are consistent with the loessaccumulation rate at Qinan and with the eolian mass accumulation rate in the North Pacific. Thesefeatures firmly indicate an eolian origin of the studied sequence, and also reveal a coeval changesbetween the long-term changes of eolian grain-size and continental aridity in the dust sourceregions.

WITH the increase of heating temperature, phase of pyrophyllite will undergo a series of transformations. Former scholars have done some work in this respect; the temperature spans,however, were normally not more than 115.℃ and no relatively comprehensive results have been reported. Thus, the features of the phases from indoor temperature to melting point (1710℃±) for pyrophyllite and the entire evolutionary process of the phases are uncertain.

Fluid inclusions from the Dajing and Caijiaying deposits have nearly the same homogenization temperature. Correlation between temperature and salinity shows that both Sn- and Cu-bearing fluids Sn and Cu were present in the Dajing deposit but only one kind of fluids continuously evolved in the Caijiaying deposit. Study on rare earth elements (REE) in ancient fluid from the inclusions indicates that the fluid of Sn mineralizing stage in Dajing was derived from remelting magma of the continental crust, and the fluid of Cu-Pb-Zn mineralizing stage in the Dajing deposit and the fluid of Cu-Pb-Zn mineralization in the Caijiaying deposit were derived from the mantle. It is concluded that the Cu-Pb-Zn mineralizations in the Dajing and Caijiaying deposits resulted from the identical tectono-thermal event of magma-fluids induced by Mesozoic tectonic transition and extension in the eastern part of North china Craton.
