A one-dimensional heat transfer model of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and modeling of snow temperatures at Dome A, the summit of Antarctic Plateau

A vertical one-dimensional numerical model for heat transferring within the near-surface snow layer of the Antarctic Ice Sheet was developed based on simplified parameterizations of associated physical processes for the atmosphere, radiation, and snow/ice systems. Using the meteorological data of an automatic weather station (AWS) at Dome A (80°22′S, 70°22′E), we applied the model to simulate the seasonal temperature variation within a depth of 20 m. Comparison of modeled results with observed snow temperatures at 4 measurement depths (0.1, 1, 3. 10 m) shows good agreement and consistent seasonal variations. The model results reveal the vertical temperature structure within the near-surface snow layer and its seasonal variance with more details than those by limited measurements. Analyses on the model outputs of the surface energy fluxes show that: 1) the surface energy balance at Dome A is characterized by the compensation between negative net radiation and the positive sensible fluxes, and 2) the sensible heat is on average transported from the atmosphere to the snow, and has an evident increase in spring. The results are considered well representative for the highest interior Antarctic Plateau.

To meet the needs of large-scale genomic/genetic studies, the next-generation massively parallelized sequencing technologies provide high throughput, low cost and low labor-intensive sequencing service, with subsequent bioinformatic software and laboratory methods developed to expand their applications in various types of research. PCR-based genomic/genetic studies, which have significant usage in association studies like cancer research, haven't benefited much from those next-generation sequencing technologies, because the shortgun re-sequencing strategy used by such sequencing machines as the Illumina/Solexa Genome Analyzer may not be applied to direct re-sequencing of short-length target regions like those in PCR-based genomic/genetic studies. Although several methods have been proposed to solve this problem, including microarray-based genomic selections and selector-based technologies, they require advanced equipment and procedures which limit their applications in many laboratories. By contrast, we overcame such potential drawbacks by utilizing a ligation by amplification (LBA) protocol, a method using a pair of Universal Adapters to randomly ligate target regions in a two-step-PCR procedure, whose Long LBA products were easily fragmented and sequenced on the next-generation sequencing machine. In this concept-proven study, we chose the consensus coding sequences of two human cancer genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2 as target regions, specifically designed LBA primer pairs to amplify and randomly ligate them. 70 target sequences were successfully amplified and ligated into Long LBA products, which were then fragmented to construct DNA libraries for sequencing on both a conventional Sanger sequencer ABI 3.3.xl DNA Analyzer and the next-generation 'synthesis by sequencing technology' Illumina/Solexa Genome Analyzer. The taxonomy of Lepisorus(***.) Ching *** in China was revised based on herbarium specimen examinations,field observations,and microscopic study of rhizome scales,soral paraphyses,leaf epidermis, and *** a result,nine species were recognized:Lepisorus macrosphaerus(Baker) Ching,Lepisorus asterolepis (Baker) Ching,Lepisorus marginatus Ching,Lepisorus kuchenensis(***) Ching,Lepisorus megasorus(***.) Ching,Lepisorus kawakamii(Hayata) Tagawa,Lepisorus subsessilis Ching & ***,Lepisorus affinis Ching, and Lepisorus nudus(Hook.) *** kawakamii(Hayata) Tagawa was reinstated;Lepisorus gyirongensis Ching & *** and Lepisorus longus Ching were reduced to synonyms *** and ***,respectively. The subdivision ofLepisorus macrosphaerus was not *** scales and paraphyses are the most useful characters for species delimitation as well as for infrageneric *** of the leaf epidermis and spore ornamentation are usually stable and thus of great significance in understanding the relationships among groups within the genus.

Overview of HBV whole genome data in public repositories and the chinese HBV reference sequences

The number of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) whole genomic sequences in public nucleotide databases (GenBank, EMBL, and DDBJ) had reached 866 by January 1, 2007. Coming from 46 countries and regions, these sequences were categorized as eight genotypes (A–H). With the statistical and phylogenetic analysis on all available complete genomic data of HBV, we here present an overview of HBV sequences in public databases. From all registered 229 HBV genomes in chinese regions as well as 59 sequencing data from our research group, we report the establishment of reference sequences of HBV strains prevailing in China. These analyses provide clues for the effects of HBV genotypes in host clinical progressions, geographic distribution of the infection, and the viral evolutionary history. Moreover, the viral sequence reference would be helpful in the identiffcation of various HBV mutations. Based on the analysis of various public databases, we suggest that the chinese HBV database with the clinical information should be constructed.

Experimental investigation on a parabolic trough solar collector for thermal power generation

Developing solar thermal power technology in an effective manner is a great challenge in *** this paper an experiment platform of a parabolic trough solar collector system(PTCS) was developed for thermal power generation,and the performance of the PTCS was experimentally investigated with synthetic oil as the circulate heat transfer fluid(HTF).The solar collector's efficiency with the variation of the solar flux and the flow rate of the HTF was *** collector efficiency of the PTCS can be in the range of 40%-60%.It was also found that there existed a specified delay for the temperature of the HTF to response to the solar flux,which played a significant role in designing the *** heat loss effect on collector efficiency was also studied,which was about 220 W/m for the receiver with a 180°C temperature difference between the collector temperature and the ambient temperature,amounting to about 10% of the total solar energy incident on the *** encouraging results can provide fundamental data for developing the parabolic trough solar thermal power plant in China.

A formula on linear complexity of highest coordinate sequences from maximal periodic sequences over Galois rings

Using a polynomial expression of the highest coordinate map, we deduce an exact formula on the linear complexity of the highest coordinate sequence derived from a maximal periodic sequence over an arbitrary Galois ring of characteristic p2 , where p is a prime. This generalizes the known result of Udaya and Siddiqi for the case that the Galois ring is Z4.

Algebraic immunity has been considered as one of cryptographically significant properties for Boolean functions. In this paper, we study ∑d-1 i=0 (ni)-weight Boolean functions with algebraic immunity achiev-ing the minimum of d and n - d + 1, which is highest for the functions. We present a simpler sufficient and necessary condition for these functions to achieve highest algebraic immunity. In addition, we prove that their algebraic degrees are not less than the maximum of d and n - d + 1, and for d = n1 +2 their nonlinearities equalthe minimum of ∑d-1 i=0 (ni) and ∑ d-1 i=0 (ni). Lastly, we identify two classes of such functions, one having algebraic degree of n or n-1.

CMQV+:An authenticated key exchange protocol from CMQV

Ustaoglu presents a secure and efficient key exchange protocol named CMQV,based on the design rationales of HMQV and *** with the latter two protocols,on one hand,CMQV achieves high performance of HMQV,and on the other,it is proven secure in eCK model as NAXOS ***,CMQV enjoys the security proof under gap Diffie-Hellman assumption as indicated by its *** this paper,we propose a variant of CMQV,called CMQV+,which is proven secure under a weaker assumption (*** Diffie-Hellman assumption) in eCK model with random oracles while maintaining the high-performance feature of CMQV as much as possible.
