By a simple phase field model, a series of numerical simulations of solidification microstructure was performed to show a rich variety of dendritic patterns. At the same time, the relation between the morphology of grain growth and some parameters including the strength of anisotropy, dimensionless latent heat and the size of initial solid zone was studied. It is for the first time that patterns of grain growth were associated with the size of initial solid zone, which is an interesting issue. The possible reason for this may be that variation in the size of initial solid zone may bring about fluctuation of the interface energy, making the interface unstable.

An expert system prototype for fibre-reinforced plastic matrix (FRP) composite material design, ESFRP, has been developed. The system consists of seven main functional parts: a general inference engine, a set of knowledge bases, a material properties algorithm base, an explanation engine, various data bases, several function models and the user interface. The ESFRP can simulate human experts to make design scheme for fibre-reinforced plastics design, FRP layered plates design and FRP typical engineering components design. It can also predict the material properties and make strength analysis according to the micro and macro mechanics of composite materials. A satisfied result can be gained through the reiterative design.

The adsorption and desorption of the toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis strain WG-001 on rectorite were studied at different toxin and/or rectorite concentrations, pH values and temperatures. The insecticidal activity of the adsorbed toxin was evaluated by determining the lethal concentration to kill 50% of the larvae of Heliothis armigera （LC50）. The adsorption of the toxin on rectorite in sodium carbonate buffer （pH 9） reached equilibrium within 0.5-1.0 h and the adsorption isotherm of the toxin followed the Langmuir equation （R^2 〉 0.99）. In the pH range from 9 to 11 （carbonate buffer）, the adsorbed toxin decreased with increasing pH. The adsorption amounts decreased with increasing rectorite：toxin ratio. The adsorption was not significantly affected by the temperature between 10 and 50 ℃. The X- ray diffraction analysis indicated occurrence of the intercalation of the rectorite by the toxin. The infrared absorption spectrum showed that the binding of the toxin did not alter its structure. The LC50 wlues of the adsorbed toxin were smaller than those of the free toxin. The rectorite protected the toxin from ultraviolet irradiation damage. The desorption of the adsorbed toxin in water ranged from 3..5% to 56.4% and from 27.4% to 41.8% in a carbonate buffer. The desorption percentage also decreased with increasing rectorite：toxin ratio.

When making a diamond film by direct current plasma jet, a kind piece of flake is used as a base body Which the film can beattached to. The flake's temperature is unstable. Therefore, some experiments and constructed mathematical models, which were solvedby computer, were done. The results show that the flake's temperature is influenced by many factors and the mains are plasma jet powerand vacuum pressure. Through adjusting the two parameters, the flake's temperature can be accurately controlled, furthermore, diamondfilms' quality would be improved. Lowering sediment platform's temperature has a little effect to the flake's temperature at present technology conditions.

Thirteen security requirements for an ideal password authentication scheme using smart cards are listed and a new smart card based password authentication scheme with identity anonymity is proposed. The new scheme can satisfy all the listed ideal security requirements and has the following merits：（1） it can resist all the attacks listed in introduction; （2） less storage memory requirement due to no verification table stored in server; （3. low computational cost due to hash functions based operations; （4） even if the smart card is lost, the new system is still secure; （5） As user identity is anonymous, this scheme is more practical. The new proposed scheme can be applied in source constraint networks.
