Follow-up investigation on hair arsenic concentration was conducted in an arsenic heavily polluted area of southern China in 2.02.and 2.06. The results showed that the geometric mean of hair arsenic concentration decreased from 2.95 mg/kg in 2.02.to 1.78 mg/kg in 2.06, when the percentage of the population with levels over 1 mg/kg only decreased from 93.4% in 2.02.to 80.5% in 2.06. Over this four-year period, the population with high arsenic concentrations decreased significantly while there was no obvious change in hair arsenic concentration for people who had relatively low concentrations. In terms of age distribution, young and old people had higher hair arsenic concentrations than the middle-aged. All of these results showed that it is difficult to reverse the negative impact of arsenic pollution on human health. Arsenic pollution has a long-term continuous influence on the health of local residents.

The gdcsP promoter isolated from C3.C4 intermediate plant Flaveria anomala was fused to the β-glu-curonidase (GUS) gene. The chimeric gene was inserted into the binary vector pBin19 and introduced into the rice (Oryza saliva L.) cv. 8706 by Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer. GUS activity can be detected in leaf, leaf sheath, stem and root tissues via fluorometric GUS assay. However, no GUS activity was found in mature endosperm. Histochemical localization revealed that GUS expression was exclusively restricted to vascular tissues in transgenic plants. This promoter also showed spatial-temporal expression patterns that GUS expression declined significantly with the maturity of plants. These expression patterns make the gdcsP promoter extremely valuable in the applied biotechnology that needs target gene expression restricted to vascular tissues.

Based on the data from 159 events at the Tongguan station on the Yellow River, we have found the rule to describe the complicated relationship between the fill-scour features and the event-maximum suspended concentration (C_max). The depth of scour is large if the C_max is low. and is small if C_max is high. However, if C_max increases to the ranges of hyperconcentrated flows, scour occurs again. Controlled by the foregoing complicated fill-scour behaviors, the channel adjustment of the Yellow River is also complicated. When the suspended concentration is low, channel scour occurs, and thereby the channel shape tends to be narrower and deeper, and the thalweg more sinuous. When the suspended concentration increases, channel fill occurs, leading to an increase in the channel width-depth ratio and a decrease in the channel sinuosity. However, when the suspended concentration further increases and exceeds a certain threshold, channel scour occurs again, and the adjustment of channel morphology turns to the opposite direction. The rules outlined in the paper for the channel adjustment of the lower Yellow River may provide a new thinking for the regulation of the channel morphology of the lower Yellow River after the closure of the Xiaolangdi Dam, through the regulation of the lower Yellow River’s water and sediment by choosing some specific operation modes of the reservoir Either by releasing clear water or by releasing man-made hyperconcentrated flows, the downstream channel may tend to be narrowed, deeper and more sinuous.

The mixed LB film of mono crown ether substituted phthalocyanine (CPc) and potassium picrate (PiK) were prepared by adding potassium picrate in subphase. The pi-A isotherms show that the addition of PiK in subphase increases the orientation angles of phthalocyanine in monolayers. The absorption spectra revealed that the monolayer can be transferred to substrates easily. X-ray diffraction results show that the mixed film possesses the same thickness as that of pure phthalocyanine film.

Based on the Indian and chinese precipitation data and the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis circulation data, the relationship between the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) onset and the Meiyu over the Yangtze River Valley has been discussed by the methods of correlation analysis and composite analysis. The results show that the date of ISM onset over Kerala in the southwestern coast of the Indian Peninsula is about two weeks earlier than the beginning of the Meiyu over the Yangtze River Valley. After the outbreak of ISM, the teleconnection mode sets up from the western coast of India via the Bay of Bengal (BOB) to the Yangtze River Valley and southern Japan. It is different both in time and space from the telecon- nection mode which is from the northwest of India via the Tibetan Plateau to northern China. The for- mer mode is defined as the "south" teleconnection of the Asian summer monsoon, forming in the pe- riod of ISM onset; while the latter mode is called the "north" teleconnection, mainly occurring in the Asian monsoon culminant period. During the process of the "south" teleconnection’s formation, the Asian monsoon circulation has experienced a series of important changes: ISM onset, the northward movement of the south Asia high (SAH), the onset vortex occurrence, the eastward extension of the stronger tropical westerly belt, and the northeastward jump of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), etc. Consequently, since ISM sets up over Kerala, the whole Asian continent is covered by the upper SAH after about two weeks, while in the mid- and lower troposphere, a strong wind belt forms from the Arabian Sea via the southern India, BOB and the South China Sea (SCS), then along the western flank of WPSH, to the Yangtze River Valley and southern Japan. With the northward moving of the subtropical jet streams, the upper westerly jet stream and the low level jet have been coupled ver- tically over east Asia, while the Yangtze River Valley happens to locate in the ascending motion

RAV1 is a novel DNA-binding protein with two distinct DNA-binding domains unique in higher plants, but its role in plant growth and development remains unknown. Using cDNA array, we found that transcription of RAV1 is downregulated by epibrassinolide (epiBL) in Arabidopsis suspension cells. RNA gel blot analysis revealed that epiBL-regulated RAV1 transcription involves neither protein phosphorylation/dephosphorylation nor newly synthesized protein, and does not require the functional BRI1, suggesting that this regulation might be through a new BR signaling pathway. Overexpressing RAV1 in Arabidopsis results in a retardation of lateral root and rosette leaf development, and the underexpression causes an earlier flowering phenotype, implying that RAV1 may function as a negative regulatory component of growth and development.

Both decrease and increase of sediment yield were observed in main tributaries basins of the Middle Yellow River as basin area increases. Bio-climatic and morphologic features exert most important control on the relationship between specific sediment yield and drainage basin area. Sediment yield data from various environments show different trends of variation in sediment yield for loess. rock and rock/loess mixed regions.

Zonal propagation of kinetic energy (KE) and convection in the South China Sea (SCS) and Indian summer monsoon areas are examined in present study. Results suggest that the SCS and Indian summer monsoon prevailed regions (5 —15°N) are dominated by the southwesterly wind, however, the disturbances of KE at 850 hPa and convection are observed mainly coming from the western Pacific Ocean (140—150°E), after passing through the SCS, and westward propagated into the Bay of Bengal (90—100°E). In the Indian summer monsoon domain, where the disturbances of KE are found mainly coming from the Arabian Sea (AS) and eastward propagated into the Bay of Bengal. Therefore, the SCS and the Indian summer mon- soon are quite different in zonal propagation of KE and convection. The SCS summer monsoon is mainly affected by the KE and convection coming from the tropical western Pacific. The Indian summer monsoon, however, can be partly influenced by the AS and the SCS summer monsoon. The analysis also suggests that the interaction region between the SCS and the Indian summer monsoon is around 90—95°E, rather than 105°E as proposed by earlier studies.

Ambient noise data measured in an experiment conducted in shallow water near a sea-route were analyzed. It was observed that, at low frequency, the horizontal correlation has an obvious difference from that predicted by the classical ambient noise model. The theoretical analyses show that this phenomenon is caused by wind noise together with the discrete shipping noise nearby. An ambient noise model was proposed to include the effects caused by both the noise sources. Data measured at different times verify that the proposed model can be used to forecast the ambient noise field in shallow water near the sea-route.
