Apoptosis is a complex process involving a large array of genes and mutation of any of these genes may lead to malignancy formation. Re-acquirement of FasL by tumor cells may enable them to evade the surveillance of immune system and thus contributes to the growth of tumor. Apart from traditional therapies, inducing apoptosis of tumor cell by new methods employing death receptor ligands and making use of Fas counterattack is also being developed.

AIM: To follow the principles of evidence based medicine to reach the integrated results of these studies. METHODS: Twenty-one papers of case-control studies were selected, including 11 on gastric cancer,7 on precancerous lesion of stomach and 3.on lymphoma of stomach. Meta analysis was used to sum up the odds ratios (OR) of these studies. RESULTS: H. pylori vs gastric cancer (intestinal and diffuse type): the odds ratio from the fixed effect model is 3.0016 (95% CI: 2.4197-3.723., P3. (95% CI: 1.8477-3.5566, P3.studies show that lymphoma of stomach is highly associated with H. pylori infections. CONCLUSION: Since it had been revealed that H. pylori infection pre-exists in gastric carcinoma and precancerous lesions, the results of Meta analysis present a strong evidence to support the conclusion that H. pylori infection is a risk factor for gastric carcinoma.

AIM: To study the levels of membrane interleukin-2 receptor (mIL-2R) and T cell subsets in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with hepatitis C and their role in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C. METHODS: The levels of mIL-2R and T cells subsets in PBMC were detected by biotin- streptatividin (BSA) technique before and after stimulation with PHA in 203.patients with hepatitis C with HCV-RNA(+), anti-HCV(+), anti-HCV(-). RESULTS: The total expressive levels of mIL-2R before and after stimulation with PHA(0.03./-0.01, 0.03./-0.02, 0.04+/-0.02, 0.3.+/-0.03., and T cell subsets in PBMC (0.62+/-0.06, 0.3.+/-0.05, 0.3.+/-0.07) were all lower in patients with hepatitis C than those in normal controls (0.66+/-0.07, 0.41+/-0.06, 0.3.+/-0.05, P0.05). The levels of CD(3.(+), CD(4)(+), CD(4)(+)/CD(8)(+) were lower and CD(8)(+) was higher in patients with acute and chronic hepatitis C with anti-HCV(+) than those in normal controls (0.62+/-0.06, 0.3.+/-0.05, 0.3.+/-0.07, 1.18+/-0.3., 0.61+/-0.07, 0.3.+/-0.05, 1.3.+/-0.3., 0.3.+/-0.05, P<0.05-P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The cellular immunity is obviously changed in patients with hepatitis C. The levels of mIL-2R and activation of T cells are closely associated with chronicity of hepatitis C.

Comparison of Hsps Expression after Radio-frequency Field Exposure in Three Human Glioma Cell Lines

Objective To investigate and compare the effect of radio-frequency （RF） field exposure on expression of heat shock proteins （Hsps） in three human glioma cell lines （MO54, A172, and T98）. Methods Cells were exposed to sham or 1950 MHz continuous-wave for 1 h. Specific absorption rates （SARs） were 1 and 10 W/kg. Localization and expression of Hsp27 and phosphorylated Hsp27 （（78） Ser）（p-Hsp27） were examined by immunocytochemistry. Expression levels of Hsp27, p-Hs27, and Hsp70 were determined by Western blotting. Results The Hsp27 was primarily located within the cytoplasm, p-Hsp27 in both cytoplasm and nuclei of MO54, A172, and T98 cells. RF field exposure did not affect the distribution or expression of Hsp27. In addition, Western blotting showed no significant differences in protein expression of Hsp27 or HspT0 between sham- and RF field-exposed cells at a SAR of 1 W/kg and 10 W/kg for 1 h in three cells lines. Exposure to RF field at a SAR of 10 W/kg for 1 h slightly decreased the protein level of phosphorylated Hsp27 in MO54 cells. Conclusion The 1950 MHz RF field has only little or no apparent effect on Hsp70 and Hsp27 expression in MO54, A172, and T98 cells.

Purpose: To identify the cellular components of vitreous samples obtained during vit-rectomy for proliferative vitreoretinopathy(PVR).Methods: With the use of three intermediate filament (IF) proteins, vimentin, glialfibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and cytokeratin (CK), cytocentrifuge slides of 14fresh vitreous aspirates were detected with immunohistochemical ***: All the specimens contained epithelial-like proliferative cells with or withoutpigment and some membrane-like pieces. Immunocytochemical staining showed that76.0-90.0% cells stained for CK, 17.4-29.6% cells expressed GFAP, and 80.1-91.0% cells were positive for *** : Majority of cells in the vitreous samples originated from retinal pigmentepithelial cells (RPE) and glial cells in PVR. We report a case of capillary hemangiomsa that involved the entire middle ear space,external auditory canal(EAC) and tympanic *** in the case included ear fullness,hearing loss,otalgia and *** case was misdiagnosed as recurrent chronic otitis media with granulation preoperatively.A diagnosis of capillary hemangioma was established by postoperative histological *** management of capillary hemangioma of the middle ear and external auditory canal is discussed,with a review of the *** of its variable and sometimes misleading clinical presentation,hemangioma can initially be misdiagnosed as other ***,a high index of suspicion is necessary for early and accurate diagnosis.

Bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) often results in multiple organ ***,pre-exposure of mice to a sublethal dose of LPS renders the animal tolerant to a lethal dose of *** was designed to determine whether pre-exposure of a small dose of LPS was able to suppressapoptosis in mice when challenged with LPS in combination with D-galactosamine,and to investigate theexpression changes of the apoptosis-associated *** results showed that a characteristic apoptoticDNA fragmentation existed in mouse livers of the LPS-naive group,but not in control groups;and the miceof the LPS-naive group were all dead after 2 ***,in the LPS-tolerance groups,both the lethal rateand apoptotic DNA fragmentation were suppressed after the mice were challenged with LPS/D-galactosamine,and the protection against the lethality and apoptotic reaction could be maintained for up to 7 *** thisperiod, significantly lower levels of caspase-3.and its mRNA appeared in LPS-tolerant groups compared tothose of the LPS-naive group (P3.activities gradually recovered as the observationwas *** findings suggest that LPS tolerance could suppress apoptosis in mouse liver cells,andthe expression and activity of caspase-3.could be down-regulated.

Since the centrifugal inhibitory effect of acupuncture on nociceptors wasfound in 1982, we have systematically studied the regularity of this action andits pathways using dissected technique of nerve fine bundles at nociceptor *** main results and conclusions are as follons: 1. Electrical stimulation of the lateral hypothelamic area could inhibitthe peripheral noxious afferents through the adrenal gland-sympathetic system,indicating that the lateral hypothalamic area is one of the centres originatingthe centrifugal inhibitory effect on nociceptors.

In 1929, I was born in Shanghai. I graduated from the former Hsiang Ya medical College (a Yale-affdiated medical school in china before Liberation in 1949, and the predecessor of today’s Hunan medical university) in 1952. My aspiration to be a clinical doctor was strongly influenced by my father Sophie (his pen name) whereas my devotion for all my life to neuro-anatomy resulted from the interaction between the mandatory system of work assignment by the State and my personal selfdevelopment. In the year of my graduation, the Ministry of Public Health under the National military Commission was in need of a human anatomy lecturer and asked its civil counterpart to select a nominee for the vacancy. At the time, Ihad chosen basic medical research as my career and anatomy was definitely not one of my options, nor was any of my classmates in favor of it.
