Single nucleotide polymorphisms in chicken lmbr1 gene were associated with chicken growth and carcass traits

Lmbr1 is the key candidate gene controlling vertebrate limb development, but its effects on animal growth and carcass traits have never been reported. In this experiment, lmbr1 was taken as the candi-date gene affecting chicken growth and carcass traits. T/C and G/A mutations located in exon 16 and one A/C mutation located in intron 5 of chicken lmbr1 were detected from Silky, White Plymouth Rock broilers and their F2 crossing chickens by PCR-SSCP and sequencing methods. The analysis of vari-ance (ANOVA) results suggests that T/C polymorphism of exon 16 had significant association with eviscerated yield rate (EYR), gizzard rate (GR), shank and claw rate (SCR) and shank girth (SG); A/C polymorphism of intron 5 was significantly associated with SCR, liver rate and head-neck weight (HNW), while both sites had no significant association with other growth and carcass traits. These results demonstrate that lmbr1 gene could be a genetic locus or linked to a major gene significantly affecting these growth and carcass traits in chicken.

Cattle yaks are an F1 hybrid between cattle and yaks and exhibit significant hybrid vigor. However, cattle yaks are sterile males. To study the epigenetic aspects of this reproductive isolation, IGF2 mRNA expression in cattle yaks and their parents and the patterns of the IGF2 differentially methylated regions (DMR) were examined in blood and testes. The results showed that IGF2 expression in cattle yaks’ testes was lower than in their parents (P 0.05). Our study showed that IGF2 plays an important role in bovine spermato-genesis and might be involved in cattle-yak male sterility. The methylation level of the IGF2 DMR was irrelevant to the lower expression of IGF2 in cattle yaks; other factors perhaps play roles in its expression.

Artificial Induction of Twinning by an Active Immunization of Beef Cows Against Inhibin Partially Purified from Porcine Seminal Plasma

Two hundred and seventy multiparous Chinese Yellow cattle (beef) were selected at 1 to 3 months postpartum and divided into three groups (90 cows for each). animals were given both a primary and booster immunizations with a total dose of 3 mg (Group Th) or 1.5 mg (Group Tl) of seminal preparation containing inhibin activity, emulsified with Freund's complete adjuvant and incomplete adjuvant (for booster) , at 3 or 4-week intervals. Other cows were treated with the same volume of seminal preparation without inhibin activity as procedures mentioned above to serve as a control (Group C). Artificial inseminations were given twice at 8 - 12 h intervals when the cow was in heat. Jugular venous blood samples were collected from each cow and used to assay the presence of antibody against seminal preparation by double-diffusion in agar precipitation test and to detect the titer of inhibin antibody by an ELISA method. Data from 247 cows showed that 83.9% (73/87) of cows were in estrus and ovulated 89 ova altogether, of which 19 cows ovulated twin ova and 15 cows produced twins in Group Th (n = 87). However, only 61.1% (44/72) of cows in Group TI (n = 72) and 62.5% (55/88) of cows in Group C were in estrus and ovulated 46 and 52 ova altogether respectively. The ovulation rate (1.27 ± 0.03), calving rate (126.3%) and twinning rate (26.3%) in Group Th were greater than those in Groups Tl or C (Panimals (r = 0.7507, P<0.01). These results indicate that active immunization of postpartum cows against inhibin purified from porcine seminal plasma may increase the ovulation rate and induce twinning, suggesting the potential to develop a method to improve fertility in cows.

Fall dormancy (FD) is one of the most important traits in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) crop grown in northern climates. Dry matter production data of varieties with different FD levels are needed for predicting the yield *** research was undertaken to identify and compare variability in dry matter (DM) yields of 42 alfalfa varieties with FD classes ranging from 2 to 9 in zhengzhou,henan Province,*** study was conducted for four years with five cuts per *** results showed that the dormant (class 2) and the semidormant varieties (class 4) produced the greatest DM yield,which were significantly greater than nondormant varieties of FD classes ***,DM yields among dormant and semidormant varieties of FD classes 2 to 6 were not different,so did among classes 3,5,6,7,8,*** negative correlation was between FD classes and DM yields,but their correlation was not significant,which correlation coefficient was -0.097,suggesting that the FD should not be used as main index in zhengzhou introducing variety *** in DM yields among the varieties with identical FD class indicate the possibility in selecting varieties with both great yields and suitable FD *** this study,the best varieties were"Runner"(class 2),"Alfaking"(class 3),"WL-323ML"(class 4),"Goldenkey",and"CW680"(class 6),with average annual DM yields ranged from 22 to 24 t ha-1.(3)For all varieties,DM yield for the first cut was the highest,reduced gradually for the subsequent cuts,and was the lowest for the final cut each year,indicating larger influence of growing seasons than of the FD *** data suggest that in order to increase DM yield,best management practices should be focused on the spring and early summer.

Initial Study on the Antibacterial Action of Mentha spicata Linn Extract in Vitro

[Objective] The research aimed to study the antibacterial action of Mentha spicata Linn extract in vitro.[Method] The cylinder-plate method was used to measure the inhibitory zone size of Mentha spicata Linn *** test-tube double dilution method was used to measure the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC)of Mentha spicata Linn extract on the four kinds of animal pathogenic bacteria,which could determine the antibacterial effect.[Result] The decoction,alcohol extract and volatile oil of Mentha spicata Linn had the different antibacterial effects on the four kinds of animal pathogenic *** the inhibition effect on the pig staphylococcus was comparatively *** of Mentha spicata Linn decoction I,alcohol extract III,volatile oil V and volatile oil VI were respectively 31.25,62.5,2.32 and 2.31 mg/ml.[Conclusion] The decoction,alcohol extract and volatile oil of Mentha spicata Linn had the certain antibacterial effect in vitro,and the extracts which were gained by the different extraction methods had the different inhibition effects on the experimental bacteria.
