γ-hydroxybutyrate protects the liver from warm ischemia-reperfusion injury in rat

BACKGROUND: Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) syndrome remains an important clinical consideration in hepatic sur- gery, hemorrhagic shock, and liver transplantation, -y-hy- droxybutyrate (GHB) has been reported to exert protective effects against ischemia-reperfusion injury to various or- gans. To investigate whether GHB protects the liver from warm ischemia-reperfusion injury, we performed this study in rats. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into a sham-operation group, a control group, and three I/R groups pretreated with GHB, GHB plus naloxone or naloxone. After 30 minutes of partial ischemia, followed by 60 minutes of reperfusion in the liver, histomorphological and enzymological changes, lipid peroxidation, apoptosis, and the plasma level of endothelin-1 were observed. RESULTS: I/R increased the serum levels of alanine ami- notransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehy- drogenase and the plasma level of endothelin-1 significantly (P<0.01), in addition to increase of apoptotic index (AI) from 0.28%±0.25% to 17.68%±1.91%. The levels of he- patic malondialdehyde were markedly increased, whereas the activities of superoxide dismutase were markedly de- creased. GHB pretreatment prevented the liver from warm ischemia-reperfusion injury significantly, but naloxone par- tially blocked this effect. CONCLUSION: GHB may significantly protect the liver from hepatic warm ischemia-reperfusion injury via several different mechanisms.

Fabrication and Thermally Sensitive Properties of VOx Thin Films by Sol-Gel Method

For the high temperature coefficient of resistivity （TCR） of VOxthin films,the preparation process including the heat-treating and the application of seed layer,has been *** the films were prepared without a seed layer, heated in air for 2 h,and then in N2for 2 h at 470℃,the TCR of about 1.07% K-1(3.75% K-1at 45℃～65℃) was *** R20℃/R100℃was about 28.75,while the R20℃/R100℃of the thin films prepared on a seed layer was *** X-ray diffraction （XRD） showed that better heating conditions led to less phase compositions and higher V2O5diffraction peak,which led to higher *** experiment results showed that the optimum heating condition was at 470℃for 4 h.

Rheological Strength of UHP Eclogite from Dabieshan: Evidences from High p-T Experiments

We present here experimental study of the rheological properties of UHP eclogite from Dabie at a pressure of 3 GPa by utilizing the 5 GPa Griggs type piston cylinder apparatus. The rheological constitutive equation of eclogite is determined with a stress exponent of 3.4, an activation energy of 480 kJ/mol and a preexponential factor of 103.3. Our!study shows that: (1) As a typical two phase rock, the flow strength of eclogite depends on the proportions of the strong phase (garnet) and the weak phase (omphacite); (2) The plastic deformation of eclogite is dominated by dislocation creep; (3) Based on that eclogite has the same strength as the upper mantle harzburgite, our study suggests that the delamination of the subducting crust component from the underlying upper mantle is unlikely. Therefore, the stretching after the collision orogeny coupled with the upwelling of the upper mantle may play a more important role in the exhumation of UHP rocks.

Effects of sodium β-aescin on expression of adhesion molecules and migration of neutrophils after middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats

AIM: To investigate the effects of sodium β-aescin on neutrophil migration and expression of adhesion molecules (ICAM-1 and E-selectin) after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats. METHODS: Rats were pretreated with sodium β-aescin for 7 d and then subjected to cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury induced by an MCAO. After a 2-h ischemia and a 24-h reperfusion, the infarct volume and neurological deficit were determined by the method of TTC staining and the Longa’s score. The effect of sodium β-aescin on the migration of neutro- phils was evaluated by measuring the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) enzyme. The expressions of adhesion molecules were determined by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. RESULTS: Sodium β-aescin significantly reduced the cerebral infarct volume and ameliorated the neurological deficit (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The MPO activity and the expressions of ICAM-1 and E-selectin in the vehicle-treated rats were increased significantly (P<0.01) after cerebral I/R. After treatment with sodium β-aescin, the enzymatic activity of MPO and the expressions of these adhesion molecules were significantly reduced compared with the vehicle-treated group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Sodium β-aescin can attenuate brain injury, down-regulate the protein expressions of ICAM-1 and E-selectin, and reduce the migration of neutrophils after cerebral I/R.

Centrophenoxine improves chronic cerebral ischemia induced cognitive deficit and neuronal degeneration in rats

AIM: To study the effects of centrophenoxine (CPH, meclofenoxate) on chronic cerebral hypoperfusion induced deficits in rats. METHODS: Chronic hypoperfusion in rats was performed by permanent bilateral ligation of the common carotid arteries. Morris water maze was used to measure spatial memory performance. Spectrophoto- metrical techniques were used to assay SOD, GPx activities, MDA content, TXB2, and 6-keto-PGF1α levels. Mor- phological change was examined by HE staining. The expression of Bax and p53 protein were assayed by immuno- histochemistry analysis. RESULTS: Chronic hypoperfusion in rats resulted in spatial memory impairments shown by longer escape latency and shorter time spent in the target quadrant. These behavioral dysfunction were accom- panied by increase in SOD and GPx activities, the content of MDA, the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators (TXB2, 6-keto-PGF1α), overexpression of Bax and P53 protein, and delayed degeneration of neurons in cortex and hippocampus. Oral administration of CPH (100 mg/kg, once per day for 37 d) markedly improved the memory impairment, reduced the increase in antioxidant enzyme activities, MDA content and the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators to their normal levels, and attenuated neuronal damage. CONCLUSION: The abilities of CPH to attenu- ate memory deficits and neuronal damage after ischemia may be beneficial in cerebrovascular type dementia.

A new approach based on PSO algorithm to find good computational encoding sequences

Computational encoding DNA sequence design is one of the most important steps in molecular computation. A lot of research work has been done to design reliable sequence library. A revised method based on the support system developed by Tanaka et al. is proposed here with different criteria to construct fitness function. Then we adapt particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to our encoding problem. By using the new algorithm, a set of sequences with good quality is generated. The result also shows that our PSO-based approach could rapidly converge at the minimum level for an output of the simulation model. The celerity of the algorithm fits our requirements.

Here we report new approaches of recovering the Earth gravitational field from GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) gradiometric data with the help of the gradient tensor’s invariants. Our results only depend on GOCE satellite’s position and gradiometry, in other words, they are completely independent of the satellite attitude. First, starting from the invariants, linearization models are established, which can be referred as the general boundary conditions on the satellite’s orbit. Then, the spherical approximation expressions for the models are derived, and the corresponding solving methods for them are discussed. Furthermore, considering effects of J2-term, the spherical approximation models are improved so that the accuracies of the boundary conditions can be theoretically raised to O ( J 2/2 T), which is approximately equivalent to O(T2). Finally, some arithmetic examples are constructed from EGM96 model based on the derived theories, and the computational results illustrate that the spherical models have accuracies of 10-7 and the order recovering the gravitational field can reach up to 200, and the models with regard to effect of J2-term have accuracies of 10-8 and the order can reach up to 280.

Study of forming mechanism of "chimney-effect" (CE) has important significance for basic theory and applications of non-seismic geophysical and geochemical methods locating oil/gas reservoirs. The theoretical basis of comprehensive evaluation of mechanism of CE using principles of magnetism, geochemistry and mineralogy has been reviewed, with the problems to be solved: (ⅰ) study for the relationship between process of oil/gas migration and geochemical field; (ⅱ) analysis of genesis of magnetic, geochemical and mineralogical anomaly; (ⅲ) interpretation of surface soil magnetism and geochemical anomaly combined with seismic data.
