self-oscillating polymer gels driven by Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) chemical reaction are a new class of functional gels that have a wide range of potential applications (e.g., autonomously functioning membranes, actuate artificial muscles). However, the precise control of these gels has been an issue due to limited investigations of the influences of key system parameters on the characteristics of BZ gels. To address this deficiency, we studied the self-oscillating behavior of BZ gels using the nonline-ar dynamics theory and an Oregonator-like model, with focus placed upon the influences of various system parameters. The analysis of the oscillation phase indicated that the dynamic response of BZ gels represents the classical limit cycle oscillation. We then investigated the characteristics of the limit cycle oscillation and quantified the influences of key parameters (i.e., ini-tial reactant concentration, oxidation and reduction rate of catalyst, and response coefficient) on the self-oscillating behavior of BZ gels. The results demonstrated that sustained limit cycle oscillation of BZ gels can be achieved only when these key pa-rameters meet certain requirements, and that the pattern, period and amplitude of the oscillation are significantly influenced by these parameters. The results obtained in this study could enable the controlled self-oscillation of BZ gels system. This has several potential applications such as controlled drug delivery, miniature peristaltic pumps and microactuators.

Nutritional status in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients

Hitherto, there has been no systematic evaluation of the nutritional status of HD patients in Thailand. 27 patients awaiting renal transplantation, 19 M 8 F, age 47.2 ± 8.6y (mean±sD), underwent HD at Ramathibodi hospital. Dietary assessment revealed the average daily intake of men and women to be respectively 1571 ±314 and 1379 ± 403 kcal, 47 ± 11 and 42 ± 14 g protein. Anthropometric data showed that mean of BMI,percent ideal body weight (%IBW), percent standard triceps skinfold thickness (%TsF) and percent arm muscle circumference (%std MUAMC) to be 20.5 ± 2.6 kg/m2, 90±12, 75 ±30 and 100±13, respectively. However, 37%, 56% and 70% of these patients had BMI, BW and MUAC less than the minimal cut-off levels. These data reflect the importance of energy depletion in these patients. The average serum albumin was 39 ± 6 g/L while 52% suffered from low albumin levels. TC, LDL-C, HDL-C and TG were 4.34 ± 1.34, 2.9 ±1.06, 0.89 ± 0.33 and 1.10 ± 0.67 mmol/L while 15% had high TC, LDL-C and 58% had low HDL-C levels. Only one patient was suffered from hypertriglyceridemia. Whereas inadequate thiamine, riboflavin, ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol status were present in 4-30%, toxic levels of serum retinol were seen in almost all patients. Low serum zinc and copper levels were also present. This study disclosed a wide spectrum of nutritional problems usually overlooked in CRF patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis. Whereas zinc supplementation may be needed, vitamin A suppIementation in these patients should be discouraged

A perspective study and financial analysis of different protocols of second trimester maternal serum screening for Down's syndrome

Objective:To compare the efficiency and related financial parameters of the double- and triple-marker test for the second-trimester maternal serum screening for Down's syndrome. Methods:The serum samples were collected from the 2^(nd) trimester pregnant women in this hospital and were examined for three biomedical markers[alpha-fetoprotein(AFP),freeβ-human chorionic gonadotropin(freeβ-hCG) and unconjugated estriol(uE_3)]by *** pregnancy outcomes were followed up and screening efficiency calculated for double-marker(AFP+freeβ-hCG) and triple-marker(AFP+ freeβ-hCG+uE_3) test. Results:(1)A total of 4,707 serum samples of 2^(nd) trimester pregnancy were collected in this study,of which 4,245 pregnancy outcomes got followed up by May 30,2009,with 462 cases lost to *** follow-up rate was 90.2%.3 cases of Down's syndrome,4 cases of other chromosome abnormalities and 1 case of neural tube defect (NTD) were *** was no medically induced miscarriage by invasive tests.(2) Detection rate and false positive rate of triple marker test for Down's syndrome screening were 66.7%and 5.26%,respectively,while those in double marker test were 33.3%and 4.01%,*** detection rate of all chromosome abnormalities was 75%in triple marker test and 37.5%in double marker *** detection rate of NTD was 100%either in double or triple marker test.(3) It costs 499,375 RMB to avoid one Down's syndrome birth by using triple marker test and 781,200 RMB by using double marker test. Conclusion:Triple-marker test is superior to double marker test in 2nd trimester maternal serum screening for Down's syndrome,and costs less to avoid a Down's syndrome birth.

We sought to identify the differences between adolescents left behind in their home villages/towns （LBA） and non-left behind adolescents （NLB） on subjective well-being and family functioning due to parental migration in south China. We used a stratified cluster sampling method to recruit middle school students in a city experiencing population-emigration in Jiangxi Province in 2010. Participants included adolescents from families with：（1） one migrant parent, （2） both parents who migrated, or （3） non-left behind adolescents （i.e., no migrant parent）. To determine predictors of subjective well-being, we used structural equation models. Adolescents left behind by both parents （LBB） were less likely to express life satisfaction （P = 0.038） in terms of their environments （P = 0.011） compared with NLB. A parent or parents who migrated predicts lower subjective well-being of adolescents （P = 0.051） and also lower academic performance. Being apart from their parents may affect family functioning negatively from an adolescent＇s viewpoint. Given the hundreds of millions of persons in China, many who are parents, migrating for work, there may be mental health challenges in some of the adolescents left behind.

sino-U.s. partnerships in research, education, and patient care：The experience of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC

In 2011, the University of Pittsburgh school of medicine(UPsOM) and Tsinghua University formed a partnership to further the education of Tsinghua medical students. These students come to UPsOM as visiting research scholars for two years of their eight-year MD curriculum. During this time, the students, who have completed four years at Tsinghua, work full-time in medical school laboratories and research programs of their choice, essentially functioning as graduate students. In their first two months in Pittsburgh, the scholars have a one-week orientation to biomedical research, followed by two-week rotations in four labs selected on the basis of the scholars' scientific interests, after which they choose one of these labs for the remainder of the two *** labs may be in basic science departments, basic science divisions of clinical departments, or specialized centers that focus on approaches like simulation and modeling. The Tsinghua students also have a brief exposure to clinical medicine. UPsOM has also formed a similar partnership with Central south University Xiangya school of medicine in Changsha, Hunan Province. The Xiangya students come to UPsOM for two years of research training after their sixth year and, thus, unlike the Tsinghua students,have already completed their clinical rotations. UPsOM faculty members have also paved the way for UPMC(University of Pittsburgh medical center), UPsOM's clinical partner, to engage with clinical centers in China. Major relationships involving advisory, training, managerial, and/or equity roles exist with Xiangya International medical center, KingMED Diagnostics, First Chengmei medical Industry Group, and Macare women's hospital. Both UPsOM and UPMC are actively exploring other clinical and academic opportunities in China.

Risk factors of intrapartal fetal death in a low-resource setting

Objective: To identify the risk factors of intrapartal fetal death in a tertiary hospital in Yaoundé. Methods: It was a case-control study comparing 53 women who delivered with intrapartal fetal death to 106 women who delivered without intrapartal fetal death, carried out at the Yaoundé Gyneco-Obstetric and Pediatric hospital, Cameroon. Pregnancy with and without birth trauma modulates the gene expression of proteins involved in elastic fiber homeostasis in the rat vagina

Objectives: Elastic fibers have been linked to the pathogenesis of pelvic organ prolapse. This study used a rat model to examine the effect of mode of delivery on the gene expression of proteins involved in elastic fiber homeostasis. Methods: 38 sprague-Dawley rats were separated as follows: virgin rats after simulated vaginal delivery, groups A (n = 5) and B (n = 5);pregnant rats after spontaneous vaginal delivery, groups C (n = 5) and D (n = 5);pregnant rats after cesarean delivery, groups E (n = 6) and F (n = 5). Groups A, C and E were sacrificed 2 days after the intervention, groups B, D and F were sacrificed 14 days after the intervention. 7 virgin rats served as controls. Vaginal tissue was harvested for RNA extraction and cDNA conversion. The mRNA expression for lysyl oxidase like 1 (LOXL-1), tropoelastin and fibulin 5 (FBLN 5) was quantified via real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction using the 2-ΔΔCt method;β-actin was selected as the reference gene. Results: Postpartum day two we observed an up-regulation in the relative mRNA expression of LOXL-1, FBLN 5 and Tropoelastin in all groups compared to controls. In lower vaginal tissue the up-regulation decreased uniformly from postpartum day two to postpartum day fourteen. However, the relative mRNA expression of the target genes in upper vaginal tissue persisted at postpartum day fourteen in the spVD and CD cohort. Conclusions: Vaginal trauma, whether as a result of spontaneous vaginal delivery or simulated vaginal delivery, resulted in the upregulation of genes involved in elastic fiber homeostasis. In addition, pregnancy and parturition, in the absence of direct vaginal trauma, also resulted in the upregulation of these genes. Our findings leave open the possibility that alterations in elastic fiber homeostasis occurring during pregnancy, regardless of mode of delivery, may play a role in the pathogenesis of POP.

The Tribbles(TRIB) family of pseudokinase proteins has been shown to play key roles in cell cycle, metabolic diseases, chronic inflammatory disease, and cancer development. A better understanding of the mechanisms of TRIB pseudokinases could provide new insights for disease development and help promote TRIB proteins as novel therapeutic targets for drug discovery. At the 2 nd International symposium on Tribbles and Diseases held on May 7–9, 2018 in Beijing, China, a group of leading Tribbles scientists reported their findings and ongoing studies about the effects of the different TRIB proteins in the areas of immunity, metabolism, fundamental cell biology and cancer. Here, we summarize important and insightful overviews from 4 keynote lectures, 13 plenary lectures and 8 short talks that took place during this meeting. These findings may offer new insights for the understanding of the roles of TRIB pseudokinases in the development of various diseases.
