BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is considered as a peripheral neuromuscular disorder. Some investigations demonstrate that MG affects central nervous system (CNS), and there are disorders in cognitive function, affection, sleep, mental status and others; however, there are also some different standpoints. Some questions are still disputed, such as whether or not MG exists in the CNS and cognitive function is impaired. DATA SOURCES: Using the terms of 'myasthenia gravis, neuropsychological test, memory, central, brain, cognitive dysfunction and so on', we searched the Medline database for the articles about CNS involved in MG, nerve and neuropsychology as well as cognitive function, which were published in the English language between January 1985 and December 2004. Meanwhile, we also searched CNKI database by inputting 'myasthenia gravis, neuropsychology and cognitive function' in Chinese for articles about involved neuropsychology and cognitive function which were published between October 1995 and June 2006 in the Chinese language. STUDY SELECTION: Data were checked in the first trial, and articles about the influences of MG on CNS, neuropsychology, cognitive function and central cholinergic function were selected, then those were obviously unrelated with above criteria were excluded. Articles which expound the influences of MG on neuropsychology and cognitive were included, but those with repeated contents were also excluded. DATA EXTRACTION: A total of 89 related English articles and 34 Chinese articles were collected, including 43 studies on involved CNS and 32 studies on involved central cholinergic function and cholinergic receptor. Sixty-three literatures were about neuropsychology and cognitive function, which were closely related with this article. Seventy-two articles met inclusive criteria and 66 were excluded. BACKGROUND: There are significant variations in the geographical distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes throughout the world, and some genotypes are associated with different clinical outcomes. Eight genotypes of human HBV (designated A-H) have been reported. The present study was designed to examine the distribution of HBV genotypes among patients at various stages of chronic type B liver disease in yunnan province, china, and to explore its significance and the relationship of HBV genotype with gender and age, clinical spectrum of chronic HBV infection, and viral replicative activity. METHODS: Serum samples from 126 patients with chronic HBV infection from yunnan province, including 26 chronic asymptomatic HBV carriers (ASC), 61 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) (21 mild, 30 moderate and 10 severe), 20 patients with chronic fulminant hepatic failure (CFHF), 12 patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis (LC) and 7 patients with HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were analyzed using reverse dot blot (RDB) methodology, which is based on the reverse hybridization principle for HBV genotyping. The relations of HBV genotype with gender and age, clinical patterns, and serological data of the patients were analyzed. RESULTS: In this series, genotypes A, B, C, and D were found. 38.1% patients (48/126) belonged to B, 54.8% (69/126) to C, 0.8% (1/126) to D, 1.6% (2/126) to a mixture of B and C, and 1.6% (2/126) to a mixture of A and C. 3.2% patients (4/126) had unknown genotypes. No other genotypes (E, F, G, and H) were found. Genotypes B and C were predominant. There was a statistically significant difference in the distributions of genotypes C and B (chi(2)=7.04, P=0.008), and C was the dominant genotype in all patient categories. The rate of genotype B in the mild CHB group was significantly higher than that in the moderate and severe groups (chi(2)=12.16, P=0.0001; chi(2)=11.98, P=0.001, respectively), the ASC group (chi(2)=5.46, P=0.02), the CFHF

BACKGROUND:Ischemic recurrent stricture after surgical repair for iatrogenic bile duct injury(BDI)remains a challenge in clinical *** present study was designed to investigate whether ischemia is universal and of varied severity at different levels of the proximal bile duct after BDI. METHODS:A total of 30 beagle dogs were randomly divided into control,BDI,and BDI-repaired *** BDI animal model was established based on the classic pattern of laparoscopic cholecystectomy-related *** animals were sacrificed on postoperative day 15,and bile duct tissue was harvested to assess microvessel density(MVD)at selected levels of the normal,post-BDI and BDI-repaired bile duct with the CD34 immunohistochemistry technique. RESULTS:In the control group,MVD at level H(high level) was remarkably higher than that at level L(low level).No significant difference was found between MVDs at levels H and M(middle level),as well as at levels M and ***, the tendency was noted that the closer the level to the hilus, the greater the MVD at that *** both the BDI and BDI-repaired groups,MVDs at level H were generally greater than those at level L,despite the unremarkable differences between MVDs at neighboring *** these two groups,a similar tendency of MVD distribution to that in the control group was found;the closer the level to the injury site,the lower was the MVD at that ***,compared with the MDVs at the levels M and L in the control group,MVDs at the corresponding levels in the BDI and BDI-repaired groups were all remarkably reduced(P<0.05).In addition,MVDs at all three levels in the BDI group significantly declined further after BDI ***:After BDI,universal ischemic damage in the injured proximal bile duct develops close to the injury site, while close to the hilus,ischemia is relatively *** hepaticojejunostomy,rather than low biloenterostomy or end-to-end duct anastomosis,should be recommended for BDI *** care

Relationship between Aberrant Methylation of FAS Promoter and Biological Behavior of Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma

This study examined the promoter methylation of APO-1/CD95 （Fas） gene in bladder urothelial carcinoma and analyzed the relationship between the Fas promoter methylation and the biological behavior of bladder cancer. Promoter methylation of Fas gene was detected by methylation-specific PCR （MSP） in 4 bladder cancer cell lines, 50 human bladder urothelial carcinoma samples and 10 normal bladder tissue samples. Correlation of the aberrant methylation of Fas promoter with the clinicopathological parameters was statistically analyzed. The results showed that Fas was down-regu- lated at both mRNA and protein level in bladder cancer cell lines and tissue samples of bladder urothelial carcinoma. The positive rate of Fas protein expression in bladder urothelial carcinoma was 34.0% （17/50）, significantly lower than that in normal bladder tissues （70.0%, 7/10）（P〈0.01）. Fas promoter methylation was detected, and the positive rate of Fas promoter methylation in bladder urothelial carcinoma was 42.0% （21/50）, which was obviously higher than that in normal bladder tissues （0.0%, 0/10）（P〈0.01）. The aberrant methylation of Fas promoter was reversely correlated with Fas protein expression （P〈0.05）. Furthermore, the positive rates of Fas promoter methylation in high-grade and low-grade bladder urothelial carcinoma were 73.3% （11/15） and 34.2% （12/35）, respectively, with significant difference shown （P〈0.05）. No statistical significance was found in the Fas promoter methylation among different clinical stages of bladder cancer. It was concluded that Fas promoter hypermethylation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of bladder urothelial carcinoma and may serve as a prognostic indicator of bladder urothelial carcinoma.

Objective:There are many reports on associations between spermatogenesis and partial azoospermia factor c(AZFc) deletions as well as duplications;however,results are conflicting,possibly due to differences in methodology and ethnic *** purpose of this study is to investigate the association of AZFc polymorphisms and male infertility in the Yi ethnic population,residents within yunnan province,chinaMethods:A total of 224 infertile patients and 153 fertile subjects were selected in the Yi ethnic *** study was performed by sequence-tagged site plus/minus(STS+/) analysis followed by gene dosage and gene copy definition analysis.Y haplotypes of 215 cases and 115 controls were defined by 12 binary markers using single nucleotide polymorphism on Y chromosome(Y-SNP) multiplex assays based on single base primer extension ***:The distribution of Y haplotypes was not significantly different between the case and control *** frequencies of both gr/gr(7.6% vs.8.5%) and b2/b3(6.3% vs.8.5%) deletions do not show significant ***,single nucleotide variant(SNV) analysis shows no significant difference of gene copy definition between the cases and ***,the frequency of partial duplications in the infertile group(4.0%) is significantly higher than that in the control group(0.7%).Further,we found a case with sY1206 deletion which had two CDY1 copies but removed half of DAZ ***:Our results show that male infertility is associated with partial AZFc duplications,but neither gr/gr nor b2/b3 deletions,suggesting that partial AZFc duplications rather than deletions are risk factors for male infertility in Chinese-Yi population.
