BACKGROUND: It has been found in recent years that STAT3 widely distributes in nervous system, including hippocampal CA1-3 region, dentate gyrus and cerebral neocortex, etc. Ischemic brain injury can cause the release of some cytokines and growth factors, while electro-acupuncture may have multi-level, multi-channel and multi-target protective and interventional effects on ischemic brain injury. OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of electro-acupuncture on STAT3 expression and nuclear translocation in hippocampal CA1 region of rat models of brain ischemia/reperfusion. DESIGN: Randomized and controlled observation. SETTING: Staff Room of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Department of Acupuncture and Bone Injury, hubei college of Traditional Chinese Medicine; tongji medical college, huazhong university of science and technology. MATERIALS: Seventy-two healthy SD rats, of clean degree and either gender, weighing (200±20) g, were provided by the Experimental Animal Center of hubei college of Traditional Chinese Medicine. STAT3 monoclonal antibody was purchased from Santa Cruz Company, USA, and G-6805 electro-acupuncture instrument was purchased from Shanghai medical Electronic Instruments Factory. METHODS: This experiment was carried out in the comprehensive laboratory of Department of Acupuncture and Bone Injury, hubei college of Traditional Chinese Medicine between September 2005 and February 2006. Seventy-two rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: ① control group(n =6): Untouched. ② Sham-operation group (n =18): Artery was isolated, but without inserting thread bolt.③ Model group (n =24): Rat models of local brain ischemia/reperfusion were established with modified suture occlusion. ④Electro-acupuncture group (n =24): Dazhui and bilateral Neiguan points were selected for electro-acupuncture treatment. AIM:To investigate the expression of toll-like receptor(TLR) 4,nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB) p65 and hypoxiainducible transcription factor 1α(HIF-1α) in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and their clinical ***:The mRNA of TLR4 and HIF-1α were investigated by real-time polymerase chain reaction in 30 cases of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and its adjacent tissues,and expression of TLR4,NF-κB p65 and HIF-1α protein were detected by immunohistochemistry in 65 cases of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tissues and 38 cases of corresponding adjacent *** relationship between TLR4 or HIF-1α and pathologic features,as well as the association between TLR4 and HIF-1α,were also ***-Meier method was used to assess the impact of expression of TLR4 and HIF-1α on survival of patients with pancreatic ***:The relative quantif ication of TLR4 and HIF-1α mRNA in tumor tissues was 0.81±0.10 and 0.87±0.11,respectively,signif icantly higher than that in adjacent tissues(0.81±0.10 vs 0.70±0.16,P=0.002;0.87±0.11 vs 0.68±0.13,P=0.000).The protein expression of TLR4,NF-κB p65 and HIF-1α in tumor tissues was 69.20%,66.15% and 70.80%,respectively,being signif icantly higher than that in adjacent normal tissues(69.20% vs 39.50%,P=0.003;66.15% vs 31.58%,P=0.001;70.80% vs 36.80%,P=0.001).There was no signif icant correlation between TLR4 or HIF-1α expression and the age,gender,tumor location,the degree of tumor differentiation in the patients(P>0.05).However,there was signif icant correlation between the expression of TLR4 or HIF-1α and tumor size,lymph node metastasis,venous invasion and clinical staging(P<0.05).The expression of TLR4 and HIF-1α had a signif icant impact on survival of patients with pancreatic ***:TLR4,NF-κB p65 and HIF-1α are overexpressed in pancreatic adenocarcinoma,TLR4 may be partly involved in up-regulating HIF-1α,and both synergestically promote development of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Risk Factors of Learning Disabilities in Chinese Children in wuhan

Objective To investigate prevalence rate of learning disabilities (LD) in Chinese children, and to explore related risk factors, and to provide theoretical basis for preventing such disabilities. Methods One thousand and one hundred fifty one children were randomly selected in primary schools. According to criteria set by ICD-10, 118 children diagnosed as LD were classified into the study group. Four hundred and ninety one children were classified into the normal control group. Five hundred and forty two children were classified into the excellent control group. The study instruments included PRS (The pupil rating scale revised screening for learning disabilities), Conners' children behavior check-list taken by parents and YG-WR character check-list. Results The prevalence rate of LD in Chinese children was 10.3%. Significant differences were observed between LD and normally learning children, and between the LD group and the excellent group, in terms of scores of Conners' behavior check-list (P china. LD is resulted from a number of factors. Good studying and living environments should be created for LD children.

The Study on BCR/ABL Fusion Gene in Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

In order to assess the significance of BCR/ABC fusion gene in adult acute lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), 28 patients who were diagnosed as ALL were enrolled to detect BCR/ABC gene using nested-RT-PCR. The results showed that 9 cases (31.25%) were BCR/ABL positive, and expressed P210 subtype. Among them 7 cases were B-ALL, and one was T-ALL. The diagnosis was proved by monoclonal antibodies recognition by indirect immunofluorescence. Adult patients with BCR/ABL positive ALL were significantly older (p0.05). The induction failure rate was high in BCR/ABL positive patients and those who achieved complete remission usually relapsed earlier. In conclusion, adult ALL patients with BCR/ABL-positive have poorer prognosis.

NMDA and AMPA receptors mediate intracellular calcium increase in rat cortical astrocytes

AIM: To study the effect of glutamate on the intracellular calcium signal of pure cultured rat astrocytes and the roleof N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-propionic acid (AMPA) re-ceptors in the procedure. METHODS: The fluorescence of calcium was measured by Fura-2/AM (F345/F380).RESULTS: L-Glutamate induced [Ca2+]i increase in most of the cells in concentration- and time-dependent *** 50 mmol/L induced the fluorescence increase by almost three to four times, while the effect of AMPA 50mmol/L was just half of that of D-(-)-2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid (D-AP-5; a selective antagonist of theNMDA receptor). 6-Cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX, a selective antagonist of the AMPA receptor)abolished the effects of NMDA and AMPA, respectively. D-AP-5 and CNQX simultaneously or respectively attenu-ated the effect of L-glutamate at different degrees, but could not abolish it entirely. CONCLUSION: Glutamatemodulated intracellular Ca2+ of pure cultured rat astrocytes through different pathways. The activation of NMDAand AMPA receptors took part in the complex mechanisms.

The characteristics of arc beam shaping in hybrid plasma and laser deposition manufacturing

As a new direct metal prototyping technology,the hybrid plasma and laser deposition manufacturing (PLDM) is proposed in this paper. In order to figure out the characteristics of plasma arc beam and mould in the PLDM process of high temperature alloy, the high speed CCD camera is used to obtain the picture around the plasma arc. Afterwards the sketch of picture is clearly obtained. And the effect of laser parameter, such as average power, pulse width, pulse repetition frequency and the angle between laser beam and plasma arc beam on the plasma arc appearance, is studied experimentally. The results show that the modality of plasma arc beam is markedly influenced by laser beam. And the improvements of shape precision and surface state of the layer deposited by PLDM are confirmed.

A New Clustering Algorithm for Categorical Attributes

In traditional data clustering, similarity of a cluster of objects is measured by distance between objects. Such measures are not appropriate for categorical data. A new clustering criterion to determine the similarity between points with categorical attributes is pre- sented. Furthermore, a new clustering algorithm for categorical attributes is addressed. A single scan of the dataset yields a good clus- tering, and more additional passes can be used to improve the quality further.

File Assignment Policy in Network Storage System

Network storage increase capacity and scalability of storage system, data availability and enables the sharing of data among clients. When the developing network technology reduce performance gap between disk and network, however, mismatched policies and access pattern can significantly reduce network storage performance. So the strategy of data placement in system is an important factor that impacts the performance of overall system. In this paper, the two algorithms of file assignment are presented. One is Greed partition that aims at the load balance across all NADs (Network Attached Disk). The other is Sort partition that tries to minimize variance of service time in each NAD. Moreover, we also compare the performance of our two algorithms in practical environment. Our experimental results show that when the size distribution (load characters) of all assigning files is closer and larger, Sort partition provides consistently better response times than Greedy algorithm. However, when the range of all assigning files is wider, there are more small files and access rate is higher, the Greedy algorithm has superior performance in compared with the Sort partition in off-line.

A quasi-physical algorithm for solving the linear separation problem in n-dimensional space

A quasi physical algorithm was proposed for solving the linear separation problem of point set in n dimensional *** original idea of the quasi physical algorithm is to find an equivalent physical world for the primitive mathematical problem and to observe the vivid images of the motion of matter in it so as to be inspired to obtain an algorithm for solving the mathematical problem. In this work, the electrostatics with two kinds of matter is found to be the equivalent physical world. As a result,the proposed algorithm is evidently more efficient and robust than the famous LMS algorithm and ETL algorithm. The efficiency of the quasi physical algorithm is about 10-50 times of the LMS algorithm’s for representative instances. A typical Boolean valued instance shows that it is hard for ETL algorithm but very easy for the quasi physical *** this instance, point set A and B is {000, 010, 011, 111} and {001,100}, respectively.
