Aim: To investigate the antitumor activity and safety of a novel recombinant mutant human tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (rmh TRAIL). Methods: Antitumor activity of rmh TRAIL was evaluated by using several tumor cell lines by MTT assay in vitro, and by using a mouse xenograft model in vivo, rmh TRAIL-induced apoptosis in tumor cells was detected by cell death enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay and flow cytometry. The safety of rmh TRAIL was also evaluated in several normal human cell lines. Results: At the concentration of 0.32-1 000 ng/mL, rmh TRAIL remarkably inhibited the proliferation of 5 tumor cell lines from lung, colon, and breast cancer compared with wild type (wt TRAIL) in vitro, whereas at the concentration of 1 ng/mL-10 μg/mL, rmh TRAIL showed no or mild cytotoxicity in the normal cell lines, rmh TRAIL (3,15 mg/kg, ip, once daily for 10 d) exerted a significant inhibition on the growth of xenograft tumor NCI-H460 in nude mice compared with the saline group (P<0.01), and was more potent than wt TRAIL, a positive control. The apoptosis of NCI-H460 cells was markedly induced in a concentration-dependent and time-dependent manner after rmh TRAIL treatment. The percentage of apoptotic cells induced by rmh TRAIL in NCI-H460 cells was significantly higher than that by wt TRAIL. Conclusion: rmh TRAIL provided potent antitumor activity in vivo and in vitro, whereas most normal human cells were resisitant to rmh TRAIL. The results suggested that rmh TRAIL might be a useful anticancer agent in future.

Discussion on Comparison of Traditional chinese and Western Medicine from Literal Translation

Literal translation,*** translate the words or phrases with the complete same meaning as in Western medicine(WM) directly,has been often adopted in English translation of traditional chinese medicine(TCM) terminology,and become the main source of the words and *** adoption of literal translation can be fully faithful to the original articles in appropriate language,distinctive expression and succinct translating,which can guarantee the information density(ID) of translating words to basically accord with that of original *** of original and target language can get the equal effect on understanding the above-mentioned technical terms with lesser culture *** to the cultural difference in china and the West,as well as the peculiar concept of TCM,literal translation is simple,but the vocabulary in WM cannot completely express the connotation and the deep concept in ***,only trying to seek for equal or similar words and phrases in WM to force to translate TCM is inevitable to induce incomplete understanding of it,because English translation of TCM is not the complete English translation of *** TCM terminologies have wider connotation and extension than the specific WM terminologies,we believe,with the further understanding of TCM theories by the world,the foreigners will not confuse TCM concepts with WM concepts of the same name *** the meantime,we still hope that,based on "contention of a hundred schools of thought",we can improve and achieve the faithfulness,acceptability and elegance of English translation of TCM terminologies by making comparison between TCM and WM,by way of strengthening the standardization and unification of TCM terminologies,of organizing academic conference on English translation of TCM terminologies,including international academic exchange.

Aim:To investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)in cultured human dental follicle cells (HDFC),and to examine the roles of VEGF inthe proliferation,differentiation,and apoptosis of HDFC in ***:Immunocytochemistry,ELISA,and RT-PCR were used to detect the expressionand transcription of VEGF in cultured *** dose-dependent and the time-course effect of VEGF on cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activ-ity in cultured HDFC were determined by MTT assay and colorimetric ALP assay,*** effect of specific mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)inhibitors (PD98059 and U0126) on the VEGF-mediated HDFC proliferation wasalso determined by MTT *** effect of VEGF on HDFC apoptosis wasmeasured by flow ***:VEGF was transcribed and expressed incultured *** at 10-300 μg/L significantly increased HDFC proliferationand ALP activity compared to the *** 1,3,5,or 7 d of stimulation,VEGF induced a significant increase in HDFC proliferation compared with thecorresponding control,while VEGF was effective at increasing ALP activity at theincubation time point of 3,5,or 7 ***98059 and U0126 could attenuate theVEGF-mediated HDFC *** apoptotic cells were observed in theVEGF-treated groups compared to the controls,although the difference was notstatistically ***:VEGF is expressed in cultured HDFC,and ata proper concentration range can stimulate HDFC proliferation,induce HDFC todifferentiate in a"cementoblast/osteoblast"pathway and protect HDFC *** MAPK signaling pathway might be involved in the VEGF-medi-ated HDFC proliferation.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is considered as a peripheral neuromuscular disorder. Some investigations demonstrate that MG affects central nervous system (CNS), and there are disorders in cognitive function, affection, sleep, mental status and others; however, there are also some different standpoints. Some questions are still disputed, such as whether or not MG exists in the CNS and cognitive function is impaired. DATA SOURCES: Using the terms of 'myasthenia gravis, neuropsychological test, memory, central, brain, cognitive dysfunction and so on', we searched the Medline database for the articles about CNS involved in MG, nerve and neuropsychology as well as cognitive function, which were published in the English language between January 1985 and December 2004. Meanwhile, we also searched CNKI database by inputting 'myasthenia gravis, neuropsychology and cognitive function' in chinese for articles about involved neuropsychology and cognitive function which were published between October 1995 and June 2006 in the chinese language. STUDY SELECTION: Data were checked in the first trial, and articles about the influences of MG on CNS, neuropsychology, cognitive function and central cholinergic function were selected, then those were obviously unrelated with above criteria were excluded. Articles which expound the influences of MG on neuropsychology and cognitive were included, but those with repeated contents were also excluded. DATA EXTRACTION: A total of 89 related English articles and 34 chinese articles were collected, including 43 studies on involved CNS and 32 studies on involved central cholinergic function and cholinergic receptor. Sixty-three literatures were about neuropsychology and cognitive function, which were closely related with this article. Seventy-two articles met inclusive criteria and 66 were excluded.
