INTRODUCTIONAcute pancreatitis (AP) is a common severe illness of the digestive tract with variable involvement of other regional tissues and / or remote organ sysems[1-3],Mild disease is associated with minimal organ dysfunction and rapid recovery ,while severe disease is associated with multiple organ system failure and local complications such as necrosis , abscess , fistulas and pseudocyst formation [4-6].

Purpose: To demonstrate the effects of retinal ischemia on retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and the associated visual *** :52 subjects with retinal vein occlusin (RVO) were studied both in RVO eyes and in the contra-lateral eyes via red-free light fundus photography. The semi-quantitative analysis of RNFL defects was done,and the severity of RNFL defects of the ischemic and the non-ischemic groups were ***: The RNFL defects occurred in 75.5% of the total 53 eyes with RVO. The incidences of RNFL defects were significantly higher in eyes with cotton-wool spots and capillary non-perfusion than in other RVO eyes and controls. The RNFL defects were significantly severer in ischemic eyes than in non-ischemic ones. Conclusion : Retinal ischemia can result in RNFL defects, and the severity of RNFL defects was closely related to that of ischemia. Eye Science 1997; 13 :21 - 24 .

Objectives To evaluate peripheral auditory dysfunction in senile dementia of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its relationship with cognitive dysfunction. Methods Pure tone thresholds,word recognition scores (WRS), acoustic immittance and auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) were tested to evaluate the auditory function in 43 AD patients and 50 normal subjects. The test reliability in these subjects was examined before the test results were evaluated for their correlation with the Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE) score. Results There were no statistically significant differences in peripheral auditory functions between the two ears in the tested subjects or between the two groups when the auditometric results of the right ear were compared(P > 0.05). Also, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups when audiometric test reliability, acoustic impedance and ABR results were compared(P > 0.05). Conclutions The pure tone audiometric threshold and WRS in AD patients are similar to those in comparable non-AD senile subjects. Peripheral auditory dysfunction is not related to cognitive dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Delayed vitamin K deficiency is characterized by acute onset, severe illness and high fatality rate. 33%-50% survivors accompany with other various nervous system sequelas. Therefore, diagnosis and treatment of intracranial hemorrhage in time become a key factor for improving healing rate and reducing fatality rate and incidence of sequela. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical situation, experimental characteristics, CT examination and terminative characteristics of infants with intracranial hemorrhage induced by delayed vitamin K deficiency. DESIGN: Case analysis. SETTING: Department of Pediatrics, Zhongshan hospital affiliated to Xiamen University. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 17 infants with intracranial hemorrhage induced by delayed vitamin K deficiency aged 1-3 months including 11 boys and 6 girls were selected from Department of Pediatrics, Zhongshan hospital affiliated to Xiamen University from January 1994 to December 2005. All infants had drowsiness, rejective milk, spiting milk, gaze of both eyes, tic, coma, full anterior fontanelle, high muscular tension and cerebral hernia, etc. Experimental examination demonstrated that infants had anemia at various degrees; prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time were prolonged; platelet count was normal. CT examination indicated that screenages of subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, cerebral parenchyma hemorrhage and intraventricular hemorrage were changed. Hemorrhage was stopped by the application of vitamin K. All patients provided informed consent. METHODS: ① Clinical situation and physical sign of infants were observed after hospitalization and scanned with rapid spiral CT scanning system. The thickness and average space of layers were 8-10 mm and the scanning time was 5 s with window width of 30-80 Hu and window position of 28-35 Hu. ② After hospitalization, four items of blood coagulation was measured with Futura meter and biochemical indexes of blood, such as serum calcium, serum alka

AIM: To investigate the expression of TNF-related apoptosis -inducing Ligand (TRATL) receptors and antitumor effects of TRATL in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: Expression of TRAIL receptors was determined in 60 HCC tissues, 20 normal liver samples and two HCC cell lines (HepG2 and SMMC-7721). The effects of TRAIL on promoting apoptosis in HCC cell lines were analyzed after the cells were exposed to the recombinant TRAIL protein,as well as transfected with TRAIL-expression construct. In vivo effects of TRAIL on tumor growth were investigated by using nude mice HCC model of ***: Both death receptors were expressed in all HCC tissues and normal hepatic samples. In contrast, 54 HCC tissues did not express DcR1 and 25 did not express *** both DcR were detectable in all of the normal liver *** expression patterns of DR and DcR in HCC samples (higher DR expression level and lower DcR expression level) were quite different from those in normal tissue. DR5, DR4,and DcR2 expressed in both cell lines, while no DcR1 expression was detected. Recombinant TRAIL alone was found to have a slight activity as it killed a maximum of 15 % of HCC cells within 24 h. Transfection of the TRATL cDNA failed to induce extensive apoptosis in HCC lines. In vivo administration of TRAIL gene could not inhibit tumor growth in nude mice HCC model. However, chemotherapeutic agents or anticancer cytokines dramatically augmented TRAILinduced apoptosis in HCC cell ***: Loss of DcR (especially DcR1) in HCC may contribute to antitumor effects of TRAIL to HCC. HCC is insensitive towards TRAIL-mediated apoptosis, suggesting that the presence of mediators can inhibit the TRAIL celldeath-inducing pathway in HCC. TRAIL and chemotherapeutic agents or anticancer cytokines combination may be a novel strategy for the treatment of HCC.

Objectives To study the relationship between plasma hemoglobin concentration and estimated glomerular filtration rate （eGFR） in elderly patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy （ICM）.Methods Clinical data of patients with coronary heart disease who were discharged from The First affiliated hospital,Chongqing medical University between 2005 and 2007 were analyzed retrospectively.
