Preliminary examination of electrochemical and spectroscopic features of trithiocarbonate collectors for sulfide mineral flotation

The redox potentials of xanthate/dixanthogen (dithiocarbonate/di dithiocarbonate, DTC/(DTC) 2. and trithiocarbonate/di trithiocarbonate (TTC/(TTC) 2. couples have been measured for the potassium salts. The spectroscopic characteristics of these sulfide mineral collectors were determined by FTIR and UV analysis. Electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements at a pyrite surface provided the basis to analyze the effect of the functional group ( O CS 2.versus S CS 2. on the hydrophobic surface state. Results from this preliminary examination are discussed with respect to the nature of collector adsorption and the pyrite flotation response.

Similar to species immigration or exotic species invasion,infectious disease transmis-sion is strengthened due to the globalization of human activities. Using schistosomiasis as an exam-ple,we propose a conceptual model simulating the spatio-temporal dynamics of infectious diseases. We base the model on the knowledge of the interrelationship among the source,media,and the hosts of the disease. With the endemics data of schistosomiasis in Xichang,China,we demonstrate that the conceptual model is feasible; we introduce how remote sensing and geographic information systems techniques can be used in support of spatio-temporal modeling; we compare the different effects caused to the entire population when selecting different groups of people for schistosomiasis control. Our work illustrates the importance of such a modeling tool in supporting spatial decisions. Our mod-eling method can be directly applied to such infectious diseases as the plague,lyme disease,and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. The application of remote sensing and geographic informa-tion systems can shed light on the modeling of other infectious disease and invasive species studies.

During spermiogenesis, the protamine proteins play an integral role in spermatid chromatin compaction. Recent research has focused on many facets of protamine biology, including protamine gene and protein structure/ function relationships, mechanisms of protamine expression regulation and involvement of the protamines in male fertility. In this paper, we review our current understanding of the structure and function of the protamine-1 (P1) and protamine-2.(P2. proteins and genes, the expression and regulation of these genes and the relationship between the protamines and male fertility. In addition, we offer a brief outlook on future investigation into protamine proteins.

Using clearly defined static fields of ice supersaturation and temperature in a new wedge-shaped ice thermal diffusion chamber, the process of ice crystal growth habit development was studied. For data analysis, the ratio between the maximum dimension of basal plane and that of prism plane was introduced. It was found that at ice supersaturations above about 6%, the habit was primarily temperature-dependent for both prisms and plates. Whereas, below the value and —10℃, it was virtually independent of temperature. Assuming the Wulff crystal conditions, σP/σB≈1.3～1.4 was estimated.
