Editorial comment Translational medicine is a new discipline which aims to eliminate the barrier between preclinical and clinical medicine. Here, Dr. Li discusses the application of translational medicine in the research, teaching and clinical work of Prof. Liu Shih-Hao, the founder of endocrinology in china, who was particularly renowned for his early work in calcium and phosphorus metabolism. This well-known success story can be traced back to an early appreciation of translational medicine by Prof. Liu Shih-Hao, and serves as an important and revelatory lesson for us all.

Aim:To study the effects of long-term,low-dose sex hormone replacement therapy(HRT)on the volume and biochemical changes of the hippocampus in postmeno-pausal women carrying apolipoprotein E(apoE)gene ε3 or ε***:Eighty-three postmenopausal women who had used a low dose of HRT for over 4 yearswere selected as the HRT group,and 99 postmenopausal women with matchedage and education were enrolled as the control *** alleles were analyzedby *** resonance imaging was performed to determine the volume ofthe brain *** magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used todetect the biochemical changes in the anterior cingulate cortex and hippocampusin apoE ε4 and ε3 *** common cognitive tests were used to make anoverall evaluation of cognitive ***:Analysis with the apoE ε4carriers showed that the volume of the hippocampus of the control group weresignificantly lower than those of the HRT *** biochemical analysis showedthat there was an increase of N-acetylaspartate(NAA)/total creatine(tCr)and adecrease of myoinositol(mI)/tCr in the hippocampus of apoE ε4 carriers in theHRT group,compared with the control *** the apoE ε3 carriers,the leastsquares means(LSMEAN)of the HRT group was higher than that of the ***:This study showed that long-term,low dose HRT might bebeneficial for reducing the risk of AD development in vulnerable ***,HRT could increase the LSMEAN of apoE ε3 carriers.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer remains a devastating disease with a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. Recent advances in diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches have increased the possibility of improving the existing poor prognosis. DATA SOURCES: English-language articles reporting early diagnosis and therapy of pancreatic cancer were searched from the MEDLINE and PubMed databases, Chinese-language articles were from CHKD (china Hospital Knowledge Database) RESULT: The current literature about pancreatic cancer was reviewed from three aspects: statistics, screening and early detection, and therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Early detection and screening of pancreatic cancer currently should be limited to high risk patients Surgical resection is the only curative approach available, with some recent improvement in outcomes. Gemcitabine has been a standard treatment during the last decade. Gemcitabine based combination treatment, especially combined with newer molecular targeted agents, is promising. The rationale for radiotherapy is controversial, but with the recent development of modern radiation delivery techniques, radiotherapy should be intensified. Patients with borderline pancreatic cancer could benefit from neoadjuvant therapy but more evidence is needed and the best neoadjuvant regimen is still to be determined.

This study was performed to build region-specific reference ranges of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets for Chinese healthy adults from the young to the elderly and analyze the trends of changes in lymphocyte subsets for evaluating the impact of age on the values.151 healthy adults aged 19-86 were recruited based on the SENIEUR *** sets of reference ranges were finally built applicable for the healthy young(19-44 years),middle-aged(45-64 years) and elder adults(≥65).Comparisons in parameters among the three cohorts showed that a statistically significant increase in CD16CD56+ NK cell was observed between the middle-aged and elder cohorts,whereas for the majority of the parameters,a significant decline was observed between the young and the middle-aged *** results showed that inverse correlations were observed between the age and CD19+ B,CD3+ T,CD3+CD4+ T,CD4+CD45RA+CD62.+ nave T cell and CD4+CD2.+/CD4+,while the positive one was identified between the age and the NK *** significant changes of the most of immune parameters provided evidence for ***,T cell activation markers of CD8+CD38+ and CD8+HLA-DR+ showed reverse trends of association with age,which provides a clue for further researches on the mechanisms underlying the paradoxical clinical presentation of the elder patients.

Surgical Management of Macular Epiretinal Membranes

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of surgical treatment on macular epiretinal ***: Vitrectomy and membrane removal were undergone for idopathic or secondary macular epiretinal ***: Fourteen eyes of 15 patients (93%) had vision improvement after operation in which 8 eyes (57%) increased 3 or more Senellen lines. Only one case suffered from paracentral scotoma. No other complications were noted. Conclusion: Surgical management of macular epiretinal membrane is safe and effective with good visual outcome and few complications. Eye Science 1996; 12.140 -144.

Aim: To study the potential chemopreventive effect of dimethyl dicarboxylate biphenyl (DDB), an anti-hepatitis drug, on hepatocarcinogenesis in vitro. Methods: The anti-carcinogenesis effect of DDB was assessed on a two-stage chemical oncogenesis model induced by 3-methylcholanthrene and 12.0-tetradecanoyl phorbol 13-acetate (TPA) with WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells (WB-F344 cells) in vitro. A soft-agar colony formation assay was used to determine the tumorigenic potential of the transformed WB-F344 cells. The gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) was detected using the scrape loading/ dye transfer technique. Results: DDB at 1 μmol/L, 2.μmol/L, and 4 μmol/L significantly prevented the malignant transformation of WB-F344 cells induced by 3-methylcholanthrene and TPA. The average number of transformed foci decreased dramatically by 10.0%, 37.2., and 47.4%, respectively. In soft agar, a remarkable decrease in colony numbers was observed in transformed cells treated with 2.μmol/L and 4 μmol/L DDB. DDB at 1 μmol/L, 2.μmol/L, and 4 μmol/L inhibited the downregulation of GJIC induced by TPA in a dose-dependent manner. The GJIC recovered to 2..6%, 34.6%, and 44.9%, respectively, of the control WB-F344 cells by DDB. Conclusion: DDB has a potential chemopreventive effect on hepatocarcinogenesis induced by carcinogens in vitro.

Aim:To explore the anti-inflammatory effects of amurensin H on asthma-like reac-tion induced by allergen in sensitized ***:BALB/c mice were sensi-tized by ovalbumin(OVA,ip)on d 0 and d 14 and challenged with 1% OVA on d 18to *** developed airway eosinophilia,mucus hypersecretion,and elevationin cytokine *** were administered amurensin H orally at the doses of 49,70,or 100 mg/kg once every day from d 15 to the last *** lavagefluid(BALF)were collected at 2. h and 48 h after the last OVA *** tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interleukin 4(IL-4),interleukin 5(IL-5),andinterleukin 13(IL-13)in BALF were measured using ELISA *** counts of macrophages,lymphocytes,neutrophils and eosinophils were per-formed in 2.0 cells per slide(one slide per animal).Lung tissue sections of 6-μmthickness were stained with Mayer’s hematoxylin and eosin for assessment of cellinfiltration,mucus production,and tissue ***:Oral administrationof amurensin H significantly inhibited OVA-induced increases in total cell counts,eosinophil counts,and TNF-α,IL-4,IL-5 and IL-13 levels in *** addition,amuresin H dramatically decreased OVA-induced lung tissue damage and ***:Amurensin H may have therapeutic potential for thetreatment of allergic airway inflammation.
