TWO PHASES OF CENOZOIC DEFORMATION IN NORTHEASTERN TIBET: THRUSTING FOLLOWED BY STRIKE-SLIP FAULTING

In order to establish deformation history for the Cenozoic development of the Tibetan Plateau, we conducted geologic mapping along a 12.km traverse between Nangqian and Yushu in the northeastern Qiangtang terrane. This work reveals a complex interaction among Tertiary thrusting, strike\|slip faulting, sedimentation, and igneous activity. Two phases of deformation are recognized. The older northeast—southwest shortening, expressed by thrusting and folding, is followed by left\|slip faulting along northwest\|trending faults. Tertiary thrusts, predominantly southwest\|dipping, are distributed throughout the traverse, and typically juxtapose Mesozoic strata over Paleogene strata. The latter were deposited in several separated basins during folding and thrusting, as indicated by well\|developed growth strata. A preliminary construction of balanced cross\|sections suggests a minimum estimate of 45km of crustal shortening along the traverse. Numerous hypabyssal intrusions were mapped in the southern part of the traverse near Nangqian. They were emplaced into the Paleogene sediments and are dated between 36 and 33Ma by 40 Ar/ 39 Ar and U\|Pb methods. Paleogene sediments are also interbedded with volcanics in both the southern and northern parts of the study area. In the northernmost part of the traverse, a volcanic unit overlies a Tertiary thrust. This unit itself is broadly folded. This relationship suggests that Tertiary igneous activity was coeval with contractional deformation in the region, implying strongly the causa. relationship between the two processes. The youngest event in the area is the development of northwest\|trending left\|slip faults. They cut Tertiary thrusts, folds, and about 35Ma igneous intrusions. In contrast to widely distributed Tertiary folds and thrusts, strike\|slip faulting is restricted only to the southern portion of our mapped area near Nangqian. We present a statistical analysis of a sky survey of interstellar H2./SUB>O and OH masers. These masers can be classified into three categories: isolated H2./SUB>O masers, isolated OH masers, and simple OH/H2./SUB>O maser associations. The total number of sources in each category is of the same order of magnitude, and as an evolutionary phase they can maintain ~ 105 yr. An improved radiative pumping mechanism is proposed. This model avoids some of the deficiencies of previous radiative models, such as shortage of exciting photons. The statistical results obtained from the survey can be interpreted by the new mechanism together with the evolutionary model in which the gravitational force of the central stellar objects is responsible for the HII region.

A 33-year-old woman who presented with epigastric discomfort and diarrhea underwent an abdominal ultrasound(US).This investigation and subsequent contrastenhanced computed tomography,magnetic resonance imaging and endoscopic US with fine needle aspiration (FNA)revealed a 40 mm well-circumscribed mass in the uncinate process of the *** were suggestive of a mucinous or solid-cystic pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas,although other lesions such as a nonfunctioning neuroendocrine tumor could not be ruled *** samples were negative for malignant cells,but of limited value due to poor *** was decided to surgically remove the tumor because malignancy could not be *** intraoperative biopsies were suggestive of mesenchymal tumor and consequently a conservative resection(uncinatectomy)was performed. ASPECTS OF FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH IN INTERMET ALLICALLOYS

The mechanisms of fatigue crack propagation in intermetallics alloys, specifically γ TiAl, Nb 3Al and MoSi 2. were compared with corresponding behavior in brittle ceramics and ductile metals. This was achieved by considering the process of fatigue crack growth as a mutual competition between intrinsic mechanisms of crack advance ahead of the crack tip (e.g., alternating crack tip blunting and resharpening), which promote crack growth, and extrinsic mechanisms of crack tip shielding behind the tip (crack closure and bridging), which impede it. The differing nature of these mechanisms in brittle and ductile materials and their specific dependence upon the alternating and maximum driving forces (e.g., Δ K and K max ) provided a useful distinction of the process of fatigue crack propagation in these different classes of materials.

The Red River Shear Zone (RRSZ), which extends from eastern Tibet to the South China Sea, plays a central role in the hypothesis that strike\|slip extrusion of Indochina accommodated a significant portion of Indo\|Asian convergence. The massifs of the RRSZ, the only known mid\|crustal section exposed through a transform plate boundary, contain high\|grade metamorphic rocks that are believed to have been plastically deformed in a left\|lateral sense during the mid\|Tertiary. While the history of diachronous transtension along the RRSZ was previously obtained for temperatures below the brittle\|ductile transition from argon thermochronometry, the precise timing of high temperature deformation and the magnitude of strain have not been directly determined. This is a significant limitation to testing the extrusion model as magnetic anomalies from the South China Sea, interpreted to be a pull apart basin at the SE termination of the RRSZ, specifically predict that slip occurred between 35～17Ma at a rate of 3～5cm/a.

The adsorption of nitric oxide adsorption on clean Mod(111), Mo(111)/O2.(4×4), Mo(111)/O2.(1×3), Mo(111)/O2.(112. facets and Mo(111) oxide surfaces was studied. Mass 2. (N2. desorption spectra show two high temperature peaks at approximate 1030 (β1) and 12.0K (β2.. For NO exposures less than 0. 1 L only the ft peak was observed. At higher exposures, the ft peak appeared and small amounts of N2. as well as NO desorbed. The preadsorption of oxygen blocked the β2.desorption partially on the (4×4) and (1×3) surfaces and fully on the (112. facet and oxide surfaces. In addition, the β1 desorption peak shifted to higher temperatures with increasing oxygen preexposure.
