The current development in the intramolecular aromatic-ring stacking interactions in the complexes with compositions of DNA and heteroaromatic N-bases has been reviewed to a great extent, especially the significant contributions in several important systems about ternary mixed-ligand complexes, including nucleotide-metal ion-po-lyaromatic amine, amino acid-metal ion-polyaromatic amine, nucleotide-metal ion-pyridine-like aromatic amine, nucleo-tide-metal ion-amino acid, nucleotide-metal ion-nucleic acid base, nucleic acid base-metal ion, and the important factors affecting the intramolecular aromatic-ring stacking interac-tions in the complexes. Based on the study of stacking inter-action in the complexes, the mechanism of interaction be-tween DNA molecules and complexes of heteroaromatic N-bases has been established, which is crucial for the design and synthesis of the complexes acting as molecular devices of DNA.

A novel bis (phenoxo) bridged binuclear copper ( II) complex with dissimilar coordination environments was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopies and X-ray crystallography. It crystallized in the monoclinic system with space group C2.c, a=2. 2.1 1(2. nm, b=1. 834 2. (2. nm, c=1.877 9(2. nm, β=12..861(2.°, V=6.484 3(11) nm3, Z=8. Itconsistsof two unsymmetrical Cu (Ⅱ ) centers bridged by two phenolic oxygen atoms to yield a Cu2.2.core with the Cu-Cu separation of 0. 310 2.nm, in which Cul and Cu2.ions exhibit distorted N2.3 and N3O2.square pyramidal geometries, respectively.

The risk of drinking water is greatly concerned because of the large amount of pesticide applied to paddy field and the contamination of drinking water sources due to the runoff. A mathematical model is developed, based on the mass balance, to predict the fate of paddy field pesticides from application, runoff and mixing in a river, taking account of the physical chemical properties and processes of volatilization, degradation, adsorption and desorption. The model is applied to a river basin in Japan to estimate the contaminant level of several popularly used pesticides at the water intakes. The health risk in drinking water induced by each pesticide concerned is estimated and evaluated by comparing with the acceptable daily intake values(ADI) and with that induced by trihalomethanes. An index to evaluate the total risk of all pesticides appearing in water is proposed. The methods for risk management are also discussed.

The Denglou Cape, southwest of the Leizhou Peninsula, is the most typical tropical coast in the continent of *** coastal geomorphic development basics of the geology and Quaternary environment change are discussed. Aerial photograph interpretation with fieldwork is applied to draw the outlines of geomorphic types. Based on the investigative data, the exogenic forces and marine organism conditions concerning tropical coast development in the area are expounded, and coastal dynamo-deposition geomorphic bodies are analysed, mainly with sea cliff-abrasion platform,barrier-lagoon system, modern beach, coral reef and mangrove tidal flat, and the general process of coastal evolution at this area, as well as coastline changes since middle Holocene transgression.

Partial DNA sequences of cytochrome b gene (mtDNA) were successfully retrieved from Late Pleistocene fossil bone of Mammuthus primigenius collected from the Xiguitu County ( Yakeshi), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and from Zhaodong, Harbin of Heilongjiang Province in northern china. Two ancient DNA fragments (109 bp and 12. bp) were authenticated by reproducible experiments in two different laboratories and by phylogenetic analysis with other Elephantidae taxa. Phylogenetic analysis using these sequences and published data in either separate or combined datasets indicate unstable relationship among the woolly mammoth and the two living elephants, Elephas and Loxodonta . In addition to the short sequences used to attempt the long independent evolution of Elephantidae terminal taxa, we suggest that a high intra-specific diversity existed in Mammuthus primigenius crossing both spatial and temporal ranges, resulting in a complex and divergent genetic background for DNA sequences so far recovered. The high genetic diversity in the extinct woolly mammoth can explain the apparent instability of Elephantidae taxa on the molecular phylogenetic trees and can reconcile the apparent paradox regarding the unresolved Elephantidae trichotomy.

Meiji (Mischief) coral atoll, in Nansha (Spratly) Islands, South china Sea, consists of an annular reef rim surrounding a central lagoon. On the atoll rim there are either protuberant 'motu' (small coral patch reefs on the rim of atoll) islets or lower sandy cays that contain modern microbialite deposits on the corals in pinnacles and surrounding bottoms of the atoll. Microbialites, including villiform, hairy, and thin spine growth forms, as well as gelatinous masses, mats and encrustation, developed on coral colonies and atoll rim sediments between 0 and 15 m deep-water settings. The microbialites were produced by natural populations of filamentous cyanobacteria and grew on (1) bulbous corals together with Acropora sp., (2. on massive colonies of Galaxea fascicularis, (3) on dead Montipora digitata, and (4) on dead Acropora teres, some hairy microbialite growing around broken coral branches. This study demonstrates that microbial carbonates are developed in coral reefs of South china Sea and indicates that microbial processes may be important in the construction of modern reef systems. The results have significance in the determination of nature and composition in microorganisms implied in the formation ancient microbialites, and permit evaluation of the importance of microbial deposits in mo-dern coral reefs and of 'microbialites' in biogeochemical cycles of modern coral reef systems. The re-sults also provide evidence of modern analogues for ancient microbialites in shallow-water settings, and combine with sedimentological studies of ancient microbialites to understand their controls.

In this paper we consider the isomorphic classes of H-Galois extensions with the normal basis property over a fixed commutative ring B for a finite Hopf algebra *** result is that when H is cocommutative,then the above isomorphic classes and the 2.nd cohomology group H^2.L~*,U) are isomorphic as groups under the product defined in this paper,where L=BH,L~*=Hom_B(L,B).

Iron-arene complex was first introduced by researchers in Ciba-Geigy as an effective photoinitiator for the photocuring of epoxy resin. The photolysis of these complexes has been studied by some authors. The electrochemical study reported in this note provides further evidence for the photolysis process which is crucial for the understanding of the photoinitiation mechanism.
