Aim:To examine the effect of daidzin,genistin,and glycitin on the osteogenic andadipogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells（MSC）and the adipogenictransdifferentiation of ***:MTT test,alkaline phosphatase（ALP）activity measurement,Oil Red O stain and measurement were ***:Daidzin,genistin,and glycitin 1×10-8,5×10-7,1×10-6,5×10-6,and 1×10-5mol/L all promoted the proliferation of primary mouse bone MSC and *** 5×10-7mol/L and genistin 1×10-6mol/L promoted the osteogenesis *** 1×10-8,5×10-7,1×10-6,5×10-6,and 1×10-5mol/L and glycitin 1×10-8,1×10-6,and 1×10-5mol/L inhibited the adipogenesis of ***,genistin,and glycitin 1×10-8,5×10-7,1×10-6,5×10-6,and 1×10-5mol/L all inhibited the adipocytictransdifferentiation of ***:Daidzin,genistin,and glycitinmay modulate differentiation of MSC to cause a lineage shift toward the osteo-blast and away from the adipocytes,and could inhibit adipocytic transdifferen-tiation of *** could also be helpful in preventing the developmentof osteonecrosis.

Surface modification of hydrophobic NaYF_4:Yb,Er upconversion nanophosphors and their applications for immunoassay

β-NaYFa：Yb,Er upconversion nanophosphor （UCNP） is known as one of the most efficient NIR-to-visible upconversion mate- dais, which shows great potential in bioanalytical chemistry and bioimaging. However, its applications are greatly limited due to its low water dispersibility and thus poor biocompatibility. In this paper, poly（acrylic acid）（PAA）-based ligand exchange strategies are carded out to modify oleic acid-capped hydrophobic β-NaYF4：Yb,Er UCNPs into hydrophilic ones. After efficient surface modification, the presence of free carboxylic acid groups on the surfaces of UCNPs results in high solubility in water, and also allows further conjugation with NH2-containing biomolecules. Facilitated by the covalent linkage between the -COOH groups on UCNPs surfaces and -NHz groups in antigen/antibody, a sensitive immunosensor is constructed by using PAA-functionalized β-NaYFa：Yb,Er UCNPs as biolabels. Through monitoring the upconversion fluorescence intensity or fluorescent imaging of the final immunocomplexes, high sensitivity is achieved for the proposed immunoassay and as low as 0.1 ng/mL goat anti-human immunoglobulin G （IgG） can be detected, which suggests that PAA-modified UCNPs may serve as an ideal candidate for use as bioanalysis and bioimaging probes.

The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and oil red O assays were used to examine the effects of genistein, daidzein and glycitein on the osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of primary mouse bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) and the adipogenic trans-differentiation of primary mouse osteoblasts. The results indicated that daidzein, genistein and glycitein at concentrations from 1×10-8 mol/L to 1×10-5mol/L promoted the proliferation of MSCs and osteoblasts; genistein, daidzein and glycitein promoted osteogenic differentiation and inhibited adipogenic differentiation of MSCs, and inhibited adipocytic transdifferentiation of osteoblasts at appropriate concentrations as 17β-estradiol. It suggests that genistein, daidzein and glycitein regulate a dual differentiational process of MSCs into the osteogenic and adipogenic lineages, and trans-differentiational process of primary osteoblasts into the adipocyte lineages, causing a lineage shift toward osteoblast. Protective effects of them on bone may be mediated by a reversal of adipogenesis which may promote the proliferation, differentiation and mineralization of osteoblasts, and make adipocytes secrete less cytokines which may promote osteoclast formation and activation. In addition, the results also indicated that genistein, daidzein and glycitein may be helpful in preventing the development of steroid induced osteonecrosis.

The effects of La3+ and Gd3+ on the proliferation, differentiation and adipogenic transdifferentiation of rat calvarial osteoblast-like cells (ROB cells) were evaluated by MTT method, measuring the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Oil red O measurement. Both of La3+ and Gd3+ inhibited the proliferation of ROB cells at all concentrations (1×10-5, 1×10-6, 1×10-7, 1×10-8, 1×10-9 mol·L-1). La3+ at concentration of 1×10-5mol·L-1 significantly increased the alkaline phosphatase activity of ROB cells up to 3 folds (P<0.01). However, the effects reversed to inhibit at other concentrations. Gd played a negative role in the alkaline phosphatase activity. La3+ inhibited the adipogenic transdifferentiation of ROB cells at all concentrations in a dose-dependent way. However, Gd promoted the adipogenic transdifferentiation of ROB cells at 1×10 and 1×10 mol·L . These findings suggested that the effects of rare earth elements on the proliferation, differentiation and adipogenic transdifferentiation of ROB cells were dependent on their concentrations and species.

Immobilized chitosan as a selective absorbent for the nickel removal in water sample

Method for preparation of chitosan immobilized on silica gel(CTS silica) was described. The CTS silica was used as absorbent for the absorption of nickel in water. The results showed that this absorbent had relatively high selectivity and strong affinity to nickel. The maximum absorption capacity for nickel can reach 667 mg/g of chitosan. Factors that affect the absorption capacity, such as pH, ion strength and the presence of calcium, EDTA and the mechanism of absorption were discussed in detail. The absorbent can be regenerated with acid and reused for several times. The recovery rate for nickel can reach 99 99%. This absorbent filled in a column can be used in nickel removal from wastewater and drinking water.

SYNTHESIS AND PROPERTIES OF NEW MESOGEN-JACKETED LIQUID CRYSTALLINE POLYMERS

Some new mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymers (MJLCP) with polymer backbones, spacers, and mesogenic units of different structures were synthesized by radical polymerization. The mesomorphic behavior of these polymers was examined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Their liquid crystallinity is influenced by the variation of polymer backbone, spacer, mesogenic unit and its terminal groups. The results show that 1) a more flexible polymer main-chain is more favorable to the formation of a liquid crystal phase, while 2) a flexible spacer will decrease the 'Jacket Effect' and the liquid crystallinity and 3) a subtle modification of the terminal groups on the mesogenic unit may also have a significant influence on properties of the polymers.

Properties of meso-tetrakis (4-n-alkanoyloxyphenyl) porphyrin liquid crystal Co and Ni complexes

Six series of meso-tetrakis (4-n-alkanoyloxyphenyl) porphyrin Co and Ni complexes (12 kinds) were reported. Nine of the compounds were found to exhibit liquid crystal properties and display a hexagonal columnar discotic columnar (Colh) phase. Molecular structure of all synthesized compounds was confirmed by IR, UV, MS, 1H NIVR, and elemental analysis. These liquid crystalline compounds have been studied by cyclic voltammetry, luminescence, and surface photovoltage spectroscopy.

'Living'/controlled radical polymerization of ethyl methacrylate (EMA) was carried out with a 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)/ferric chloride (FeCl_3)/triphenylphosphine (PPh_3) initiation system at 85℃. Thc numberaverage molecular weight (M_n) increases linearly with monomer conversion and the rate of polymerization is first order withrespect to monomer concentration. The M_w of PEMA ranges from 3900 to 17600 and the polydispersity indices are quitenarrow (1.09～1.22). The conversion can reach up to～100% and M_w of the polymers obtained is close to that designed. Thepolymerization mechanism belongs to the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The polymer was end-functionalized by chlorine atom, which acts as a macroinitiator to proceed extension polymerization in the presence ofCuBr/bipy catalyst system via an ATRP process. The presence of ω-chlorine in the PEMA obtained was identified by ~1H-NMR spectrum.

Adsorption and corrosion inhibition behavior of imidazole on cobalt electrodes studied by SERS and electrochemical methods

The interaction of imidazole with Co electrodes in an electrochemical system was studied by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and electrochemical methods. The SER spectra of Co in an imidazole solution as a function of the applied potential were analyzed and the assignment of the Raman bands was made. It was found that there were three kinds of sur-face species on the Co surface in different potential regions and they were interchangeable de-pending on the potential. In a relatively negative potential region (?1.2 to ?0.9 V), imidazole was adsorbed on the surface and its orientation might change from a vertical configuration via the N-end of the pyridine ring to a tilted configuration via the C2=N3 double bond. In a more positive potential region (?0.8 to ?0.7 V), the SERS signal from the adsorbed imidazole weakened and finally disappeared, meanwhile the signal from the Co and imidazole complex strengthened gradually. At the open circuit potential (?0.6 V), we detected very strong bands from the Co ox-ides. By comparing the Tafel curves of the Co electrode in the solution without and with imidazole, we found that imidazole has a marked effect on the corrosion inhibition of the Co electrode. This result demonstrates that we may be able to reveal the complicated interaction of surface species with metal surface at the molecular level by combining the SERS and electrochemical methods.
