We studied the impact of the thickness of GaN buffer layer on the properties of distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The samples were characterized by using metallographic microscope, transmission electron microscope (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and spectrophotometer. The results show that the thickness of the GaN buffer layer can significantly affect the properties of the DBR structure and there is an optimal thickness of the GaN buffer layer. This work would be helpful for the growth of high quality DBR structures.

The concentrations of reduced-glutathione ( GSH) in liver and ovary of Boleophthalmus pectinirostris are quantified. The concentrations of GSH in the ovary are much higher than that of GSH in the liver(nearly 3 times of the liver). The study also investigates the changes of GSH contents in the two organs while the fishes were exposed to benzo(a)pyrene(BaP) at concentrations of 0, 0.05, 0.2 and 0.5 mg/L respectively for up to a week. The concentrations of GSH in the liver of BaP-exposed fish increased significantly with dose, whereas the concentrations of GSH in the ovary decreased significantly compared to controls. The results suggested that both the liver and the ovary are the primary organ in BaP metabolism, and that the changes of GSH levels may represent an adaptive response or toxic effect to Bap exposure.

The effects on hepatic EROD (7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase) in Mugil so-iuy exposedto benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), pyrene and their mixtures of equal concentration were investigated, at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 5.0, 10.0, 50.0μg/dm3, in experimental condition. Time-effects and dose-response of the biochemical indexs were observed. The results showed that the hepatic EROD activities were induced by the exposure of BaP, pyrene and their mixtures at high concentration. Dose-response connections were that the hepatic EROD activities were elevated with increasing concentration of the pollutants. The combined effect of BaP and pyrene at 1:1 concentration ratio on hepatic EROD activity was antagonism.

Three oceanographic investigations from 1994 to 1995 in the Taiwan Strait show that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the euphotic layer has a large-scale diurnal variation [2 ~ 4 mg/dm3], and its amplitude range has spatial and seasonal changes. Generally, the DOC in the euphotic layer is higher at day than that at night. According to the diurnal variations, DOC can be divided into two parts: new DOC and old DOC. The content of new DOC varies rapidly every day but the content of old DOC does not. Though there is still not a good explanation for this diurnal variation of DOC, it may call attention to the study of organic carbon dynamics, especially the DOC primary production of phytoplankton, the DOC utilization of bacteria, and the flux of DOC in coastal sea water.

Here a simple method for fabrication of the microfluidic device with micro-and nanochannels was *** microchannels in micro and nano scales were fabricated on a glass substrate during a two-step process *** then the glass substrate with the microchannels was bonded with another flat glass substrate at room temperature to avoid the collapse of the *** UV lithography and wet etching were used in this *** nanochannels with a series of depths were obtained with optimized etchant concentration of 1.5×10 -2 mol L -1 HF,7.5×10 -3 mol L -1 HNO 3 and 7.5×10 -3 mol L -1 NH 4 F,and the depth had a linear relationship with the etching time （the square of correlation coefficient was 0.9983）.The roughness length of the etched nanochannel was 2.045 nm investigated by atomic force microscopy （AFM）.The substrate was then bonded with a flat glass plate to form a closed microchannel,the cross-section of the bonded microchannel was imaged by a scanning electron microscopy （SEM）.With this method,the microchannels combined with micro and nano scale can be prepared conveniently with low cost.

-Six cruises were carried out off the south bank of Fujian - Taiwan during the period of December 21, 1987 to November 15, 1988 to estimate the contribution of bacterial biomass carbon (BBC) to the totai particulate organic pools using epifluorescent microscopic technique. The results show that the standing crop of bacteria fluctuated from 0. 95 to 66. 60 mg /m3 (dry weight). Upwelling phenomena appeared in the region around Nanpeng Island in summer while in the region of Waixie in all seasons. The average value of BBC was 27. 60(±6. 08)mg/m3and 21. 32 (±2. 34) mg/m3 respectively. The seasonal and spatial distribution is discussed in relation to environmental factors as well as upwelling phenomena. The role of bacteria in the flow of material and energy in the upwelling ecosystem is emphasized.

To enhance the long-term corrosion resistance of the plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)coating on the magnesium(Mg)alloy,an inorganic salt combined with corrosion inhibitors was used for posttreatment of the *** this study,the corrosion performance of PEO-coated AM50 Mg was significantly improved by loading sodium lauryl sulfonate(SDS)and sodium dodecyl benzene sulf-onate into Ba(NO_(3))_(2) post-sealing *** electron microscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,Fourier transform infrared spectrometer,and ultraviolet-visible analyses showed that the inhibitors enhanced the incorporation of BaO_(2) into PEO *** impedance showed that post-sealing in Ba(NO_(3))_(2)/SDS treatment enhanced corrosion resistance by three orders of *** total impedance value remained at 926Ω·cm^(2)after immersing in a 0.5wt%NaCl solution for 768 h.A salt spray test for 40 days did not show any obvious region of corrosion,proving excellent post-sealing by Ba(NO_(3))_(2)/SDS *** corrosion resistance of the coating was enhanced through the synergistic effect of BaO2 pore sealing and SDS adsorption.

Dynamics of major picoplankton groups, Synechococcus (Syn), Prochlorococcus (Pro), picoeukaryotes (Euk) and heterotrophic bacteria (Bact) was investigated by flow cytometry for the first time in the Nansha Islands area in the South china Sea. Averaged over the whole investigation area, depth-weighted integrated cell abundance (DWA) of Syn, Pro, Euk and Bact was 1.6 (0.4-5.7)×103, 5.4 (0.1-7.3)×104, 0.7 (0.2-2.2)×103, and 2.3 (1.4-3.2)×105 cells/mL respectively. Picoautotrophic cell abundance was low in the northwest part of the Nansha Islands where surface water temperature was low and the upper mixed layer was shallow. Concurrently, a surface maximum vertical distribution pattern was observed in this area. While in the southeast and east zones where temperatures were relatively higher and nitraclines were deeper, picoplankton is abundant and a subsurface maximum around 50-75 m is observed. Coupling of horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of picoplankton abundance and hydrological status was found, suggesting a strong influence of currents and water column structure on picoplankton distribution in the investigation area. Contrary to that in the shelf water in the East china Sea, the relationship between Pro and Bact in the Nansha Islands area in the South china Sea was not significantly negative but weakly positive. Moreover, a similar distribution pattern of Syn and Pro was observed. Possible reasons for these differences in the two marine regimes were discussed.

The preliminary study on nanodiatom in the Taiwan Strait was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in February 1995. Thirty-three species of nanodiatom (20 μm) were identified, among which, 6 were new recorders in china. The dominant species were Minidiscus comicus Takano and Thalassiosira tenera Proschdinae -- Lavrenko in the northern Taiwan Strait (NTS), Minidiscus trioculatus (F. J. R. ) Hasle and Natvicula climacospheniae both in the southern Taiwan Strait (STS). Abundance of nanodiatom was much more than that of microdiatom (>20 μm), and the abundance of nanodiatom in NTS is higher than that in STS. The highest abundance of nanodiatom was at the depth of 10 m of N33o in NTS, while at the depth of 20 m of S105 in STS. The vertical distribution of nano- and micro-diatom of NCI showed that the peak was at the depth of 30 m.

Alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) and dissolved phosphorus were monitored during the batch cultures of two bone microalgae. Results indicate that variation of APA was in the shape of 'S' curve. Different specs of dissolved phaphorus had different effects on APA. The concentrations of dis solved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and and molecular dissolved organic phosphorus (SDOP) had a sig nificant effect on APA, while the concentration of large molecular dissolved organic phosphorus (LDOP) had a little effect on APA., and the increase of APA could accelerate the decomposing of LDOP in the medium. Results also show that algae species and abundance had why a little effect on APA.
