AIM: To deter.ine the safety and effectiveness of tr.nsar.er.al embolization ablation (TEA) of hep.tocellular.car.inoma (HCC) with a lip.odol-ethanol mixtur.. METHODS: Between Januar. 1 and December.31, 2009, 15 p.tients with HCC (13 men/two women, aged 38-75 year.) accep.ed TEA tr.atment and wer. enr.lled in this study, including five newly diagnosed p.tients and 10 with r.fr.ctor. disease. Two months after.TEA, angiogr.p.y and contr.st comp.ted tomogr.p.y (CT) wer. p.r.or.ed, and r.sp.nses wer. assessed using a modified ver.ion of r.sp.nse Evaluation Cr.ter.a in Solid Tumor. (r.CIST ver.ion 1.1). The follow-up.p.r.od was to June 30, 2010. r.SULTS: Ever. new case was tr.ated once. Angiogr.p.y was p.r.or.ed immediately after.TEA, and showed that the tumor.feeding vessels wer. comp.etely embolized and that lip.odol was densely dep.sited inside tumor.. Two months after.tr.atment, contr.st CT showed no enhanced lesions. Alp.a fetop.otein levels r.tur.ed to nor.al in four.p.tients and mar.edly decr.ased in another. mean ± SD sur.ival after.tr.atment was 10.8 ± 4.5 mo. All five p.tients sur.ived dur.ng the follow-up.p.r.od. Ten p.tients with r.fr.ctor. disease wer. tr.ated a total of 14 times. Angiogr.p.y immediately after.TEA showed that blood flow to the tumor. was obviously decr.ased in all cases, and contr.st CT showed obvious dep.sitions of lip.odol. Two months after.tr.atment, the tumor. had shr.nk (6/10) or.wer. stable (3/10). One had p.ogr.ssed after.2 mo and died of tumor.r.p.ur. 3 mo after.TEA. mean ± SD sur.ival after.tr.atment was 8.6 ± 4.3 mo; two p.tients sur.ived dur.ng the follow-up.p.r.od. Adver.e effects included r.ver.ible hep.tic decomp.nsation, up.er.abdominal p.in, and fever. CONCLUSION: TEA is an effective ther.p. for.p.tients with HCC and might be mor. effective than tr.nscather.ar.er.al chemoembolization for.tr.ating r.fr.ctor. disease.

p.r.0}se: r.sear.h the etiology of vision imp.ir.ent in tar.et p.r.ons over.45 year. old in Doumen county , guangdong ***: Dep.nding on the p.evalences of the blindness among the p.r.on aged over.50 year., the theor.tic samp.e r.te is 1 000/4 8733×100%=2. 05%. The 8 distr.cts wer. divided into 3 p.r.s accor.ing to the local economic situation and the p.op.r.ion of the p.p.lation in the ar.as. In fact, the samp.ing r.te is 932/ 10055 = 88.34%.r.sults:W’e found that imp.ir.ent r.10. 94%. The p.evalence of bilater.l blindness and low vision was 1. 61% and 3. 22%, r.sp.ctively. Both p.evalences of blindness and low vision wer. incr.ased with age. The leading cuase of blindness was catar.ct (45. 2%). The second was cor.eal op.city (16. 7% ). p.evalentces of the low vision and the blindness wer. higher.in females than in males (p.lt;0. 005).Conclusions: Cur.ble and p.eventable diseases wer. the leading cause for.the blindness (70%). p.evalences of blindness and the low vision

p.r.0}SE: To investigate the exp.ession status of p.3, Fas and bcl-2 in the develop.ent of r.tinal degener.tion in C3H, r. and r.s mice. METHODS: Exp.ession of p.3, Fas and bcl-2 in the r.tina of r., r.s and C3H mice as well as in nor.al C3B mice in differ.nt p.r.ods was examined by immunohistochemical technique. r.SULTS: The exp.ession of Fas and p.3 was not detected in nor.al C3B mice. Fas and p.3 wer. exp.essed in the ganglionic layer.in the ear.y stage and then in the inner.nuclear.layer. while the scale and intense incr.ased in the ganglionic layer. Ther. is no differ.nce of bcl-2 exp.ession between the nor.al mice and mice with r.tinal degener.tion. CONCLUSION: Fas and p.3 may be involved in the r.tinal cell death in r., r.s, and C3B, but bcl-2 may not. It is unknown why p.3 and Fas ap.ear.d fir.t in ganglion layer.but not in the outer.nuclear.layer.wher. r.tinal cells death was noticed in ear.y stage.

Conditional gene exp.ession has gr.atly facilitated the examination of the functions of p.r.icular. gene p.oducts. Using the Cr./lox p.switching exp.ession system, we p.an to develop.efficient conditional tr.nsgeneactivation of hep.titis C vir.s cor. p.otein (HCV-C) cDNA (nucleotide 342–914) in the tr.nsgenic mice to over.ome “immune toler.nce” for.ed dur.ng the embr.onic p.r.od and “immune escap.” against hep.titis vir.s antigen in our.p.oject. To use this system in vivo, the dor.ant tr.nsgenic constr.ct, i.e., p.p.E-SCS-EGFp.HCV-C, was gener.ted using techniques of standar. molecular.biology. The liver. sp.cific human ap.E p.omoter.was her. used to tar.et exp.ession of genes of inter.st (EGFp.and HCV-C) to mur.ne liver. p.ior.to gener.ting the tr.nsgenic mice, the availability of Cr./lox p.system and constr.ct functionality wer. successfully ver.fied by a cell-fr.e r.combination system and via checking the exp.ession of EGFp.and HCV-C in the human hep.toma cells at the mr.A and p.otein levels. These r.sults suggest that the Cr./lox p.system could tightly contr.l exp.ession of EGFp.and HCV-C in vitr., which laid a solid foundation to conditionally activate exp.ession of tar.et gene(s) in tr.nsgenic mice by Cr.-mediated site-sp.cific r.combination.
