Oral health of children under chemotherapy treatment

摘      要：Purpose: To investigate the oral health status of children under chemotherapy and the effect of the treatment for childhood malignancies on oral health and on the presence and fi equency of oral mucosa lesions。Methods: A total of 59±29 males and 30 females mean age 9.8±2.2 years old) children affected by cancer were evaluated。The children underwent clinical and radiographic examination, were alterations in teeth and soft tissues were recorded。Results: Caries prevalence was registered, and the mean DMFT was 3.0; mean value of Gingival Index was 1.16±0.55; xerostomia was present in 22.0% of the children and spontaneous oral bleeding in 14.0%。Oral mucositis was also present in 14.0% of the children。Conclusion: Oral health of children under chemotherapy treatment for different malignancies should be carefully followed due to the fi equent manifestations of the therapy s side effects on the oral mucosa and to the difficulties to realize an oral treatment for those children due to their systemic condition。
