摘      要:He was bent down, behind the counter on which the cash register stood, when he heard the door open. For a moment he remained there, wondering who it might be. It couldn’t be Mr. Lazarus. It was only a little after eight, and Mr. Lazarus never came in before nine-thirty. Myself, I’m here in the morning half-past nine, ten, he had said. You got plenty time to open up around nine. It’s a business neighborhood. Nobody buys shoes early in the morning when they’re rushing to get to work on time. But Dave opened the store at eight. He wanted to show Mr. Lazarus that he wasn’t lazy. In that hour he could straighten up the stockroom in the back and run the vacuum cleaner over the rug and arrange all the boxes that had been left over from the day before.
