Nitrogen(N) is an essential nutrient for food production. The rapid increase in population requires high inputs of N to meet the growing food demand. If not managed well, the substantial loss of N from the food system has multiple impacts on grain yield, air and water pollution, and the economic benefits of agricultural. Multi-objective(food security, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability) synergistic consideration of N management in the food system is still lacking. This study employed strategies for optimizing N management in the food system, using Quzhou County as a typical example on the North China Plain. Firstly, a food chain approach was adopted to understand drivers and reasons behind N losses from the food ***, a top-down approach was used to define multi-objective N management, taking into consideration food security, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability. Multi-objective N management aims to reduce N losses to the environment and increase N use efficiencies,while simultaneously increasing yields and economic benefits. Thirdly, 3R(reduce-retain-recycle) N management strategies were identified for specific crops and animals through a bottom-up approach and then analyzed the potential of these strategies to achieve the multi-objectives. Finally, there is a discussion of how to engage different stakeholders to promote the technologies implementation. This study provides new insights into the synergistic achievement of multi-objective N management in the food system and the development of environmentally-friendly agriculture.

The Pan-Eurasian Experiment Modelling Platform(PEEX-MP)is one of the key blocks of the PEEX Research *** PEEX MP has more than 30 models and is directed towards seamless envir-onmental *** main focus area is the Arctic-boreal regions and *** models used in PEEX-MP cover several main components of the Earth’s system,such as the atmosphere,hydrosphere,pedosphere and biosphere,and resolve the physicalchemicalbiological processes at different spatial and temporal scales and *** paper introduces and discusses PEEX MP multi-scale modelling concept for the Earth system,online integrated,forward/inverse,and socioeconomical modelling,and other approaches with a particular focus on applications in the PEEX geographical *** employed high-performance com-puting facilities,capabilities,and PEEX dataflow for modelling results are *** virtual research platforms(PEEXView,Virtual Research environment,Web-based Atlas)for handling PEEX modelling and observational results are *** over-all approach allows us to understand better physical-chemicalbiological processes,Earth’s system interactions and feedbacks and to provide valuable information for assessment studies on evaluating risks,impact,consequences,*** population,envir-onment and climate in the PEEX *** work was also one of the last projects of *** Zilitinkevich,who passed away on 15 February *** the finalization took time,the paper was actually submitted in 2023 and we could not argue that the final paper text was agreed with him.

The authors propose a distributed field mapping algorithm that drives a team of robots to explore and learn an unknown scalar field using a Gaussian Process(GP).The authors’strategy arises by balancing exploration objectives between areas of high error and high *** computing high error regions is impossible since the scalar field is unknown,a bio-inspired approach known as Speeding-Up and Slowing-Down is leveraged to track the gradient of the GP *** approach achieves global field-learning convergence and is shown to be resistant to poor hyperparameter tuning of the *** approach is validated in simulations and experiments using 2D wheeled robots and 2D flying mini-ature autonomous blimps.

The increasing demand for wastewater treatment has become a notable trend for addressing global water ***,fouling is a significant challenge for wastewater distribution engineering *** study provides an approach using nanobubbles(NBs)to control *** antifouling capacities of three types of NBs,six oxygen concentrations,and two application procedures(prevention and removal)are *** results show that NBs effectively mitigate composite fouling—including biofouling,inorganic scaling,and particulate fouling—in comparison with the non-NBs *** specifically,hydroxyl radicals generated by the self-collapse of NBs oxidize organics and kill microorganisms in *** negatively charged surfaces of the NBs transform the crystalline form of CaCO_(3)from calcite to looser aragonite,which reduces the likelihood of ion ***,the NBs gas-liquid interfaces act as gas"bridges"between colloidal particles,enhancing the removal of particles from ***,although the NBs inhibit the growth of fouling,they do not significantly remove the already adhered fouling in non-NBs treated *** study anticipates that the application of NBs will address the significant fouling issue for various wastewater distribution engineering systems in order to meet the global challenge of sustainable water supplies.

Climate change is causing rapid and severe changes to many Earth systems and processes,with widespread cryospheric,ecological,and hydrological impacts globally,and especially in high northern *** is of major societal concern and there is an urgent need for improved understanding and predictive tools for environmental *** Changing Cold Regions Network(CCRN)is a Canadian research consortium with a focus to integrate existing and new experimental data with modelling and remote sensing products to understand,diagnose,and predict changing land,water,and climate,and their interactions and feedbacks over the geographic domain of the Mackenzie and Saskatchewan River Basins in *** network operates a set of 14 unique and focused Water,Ecosystem,Cryosphere and Climate(WECC)observatories within this region,which provide opportunities to observe and understand processes and their interaction,as well as develop and test numerical simulation models,and provide validation data for remote sensing *** paper describes this network and its observational,experimental,and modelling *** overview of many of the recent Earth system changes observed across the study region is provided,and some local insights from WECC observatories that may partly explain regional patterns and trends are *** of the model products being developed are discussed,and linkages with the local to international user community are reviewed—In particular,the use of WECC data towards model and remote sensing product calibration and validation is *** future activities and prospects for the network are also presented at the end of the paper.

In this study,the authors focus on the cut-off low pressure systems（COLs）lingering over East Asia in late spring and early summer and quantify the two-way stratosphere–troposphere exchange（STE）by 3D trajectory integrations,achieved using a revised version of the UK Universities global Atmospheric Modelling programme Offline Trajectory Code（Version 3）.By selecting 10 typical COLs and calculating the cross-tropopause air mass fluxes,it is found that stratosphere-to-troposphere transport（STT）fluxes exist in the center of COLs;and in the periphery of the COL center,troposphereto-stratosphere transport（TST）fluxes and STT fluxes are distributed *** transport fluxes in COLs are from stratosphere to troposphere,and the magnitude is about 10-4 kg m-2 *** ratio between the area-averaged STT and TST fluxes increases with increasing strength of the *** adopting appropriate residence time,the spurious transports are effectively ***,the authors compare the results with previous studies,and find that the cross-tropopause fluxes（CTFs）induced by COLs are about one to two orders of magnitude larger than global *** play a significant role in local,rapid air mass exchanges,although they may only be responsible for a fraction of the total STE.
