OBJECTIVE:To explore the blood circulation activating effect and mechanism of Sanqi(Radix Notoginseng)in vivo,using a venous thromboembolism(VTE)rat ***:We established the VTE rat model,and then intervened with low molecular weight hepa-rin(LMWH),as well as low,medium and high doses of Sanqi(Radix Notoginseng),to observe the blood circulation activating effect of Sanqi(Radix Notoginseng)on VTE ***:After the treatment with high concentrations of Sanqi(Radix Notoginseng),the pulmonary thromboembolism was alleviated,and the lower limb thrombosis was markedly ***,the expression quantities of plasma activated partial thromboplastin time,prothrombin time and D-dimer,as well as endothelin,von Willebrand factor,and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 in thrombosis segment tissues were markedly down-regulated;while those of nitric oxide and tissue-type plasminogen activator were *** low and medium concentration Sanqi(Radix Notoginseng)treatment,no obvious improvement was observed in each ***,the high concentration Sanqi(Radix Notoginseng)showed comparable efficacy to the positive drug ***:This data suggests that high concentration of Sanqi(Radix Notoginseng)is effective in preventing and treating VTE.

BACKGROUND： Prostaglandin E1 （PGE1） is known to be protective in ischemia-reperfusion of heart, lung,renal, and liver tissue. It still remains to be determined whether PGE1 exhibits similar protection against spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rabbit model. OBJECTIVE： To observe the large, ventral horn, motor neurons of the spinal cord, as well as limb function, and to investigate whether perfusion of PGE1 exhibits protective effects against spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rabbit model. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： Controlled observation. The experiment was performed at the department of Orthopedics, first Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning Medical University between June and October 2007. MATERIALS： Twenty male, New Zealand white rabbits, weighing 2.0 kg and of mixed gender, were used in the present study. The following chemicals and compounds were used： prostaglandin E1 injectable powder,as well as malondialdehyde and ATPase kits. Animal intervention was in accordance with animal ethical standards. METHODS： We separated rabbits into control and experimental groups randomly, with 10 rabbits in each group. Rabbits were used as spinal cord ischemia models by segmentally cross-clamping the infrarenal aorta. The control group was subsequently perfused for five minutes with blood and saline solution, and the experimental group was perfused for 5 minutes with blood and saline solution containing PGE1 （100 ng/kg/min）. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The neurological function of the hind limbs was assessed 12, 24, and 48 hours after model establishment. All animals were sacrificed and spinal cords were harvested for histological analyses. The large motor neurons in the ventral horn of L1-7 were observed by inverted microscope. RESULTS： All 20 rabbits were included in the final analysis, without any loss. In the ventral horn of the L5-7 segments, there were more large motor neurons that appeared viable in the experimental group than the control group （P 〈 0.05）. The

Current Ti-based orthopedic implants often suffer from fatigue damage,therefore shortening their service *** solve this issue,in this study,mechanically polished Ti-6Al-7Nb(P-Ti6Al7Nb)was subjected to surface mechanical attrition treatment(SMAT).Effects of various SMAT process parameters,including ball diameter and treatment duration,on the surface integrity of P-Ti6Al7Nb were investigated,specifically in terms of surface quality,surface nanocrystalline layer,and residual ***,the microstructure,in-depth residual stress and microhardness distributions,surface roughness,and fatigue behavior in simulated body fluids of optimally SMATed Ti-6Al-7Nb(S-Ti6Al7Nb)were examined and compared to those of *** showed that based on the experimental conditions established in the present research,the optimal parameters were determined to be a 3 mm ball diameter and a 15 min treatment duration,which resulted in excellent surface integrity;S-Ti6Al7Nb showed a 300μm-thick gradient nanostructured layer comprising the thickest nanocrystalline layer of about 20μm,a 1000μm-deep residual compressive stress field with the maximum surface residual compressive stress,and a microconcave topography but free of any defects or *** microstructural evolution mechanism was also elucidated,revealing that the combination of multidirectional primary and secondary twins’intersections and twin-dislocation interactions contributed to grain *** to P-Ti6Al7Nb,S-Ti6Al7Nb exhibited a 40%improvement in fatigue strength,owing to synergistic effects of the gradient nanostructured layer,surface work hardening,high amplitude of residual compressive stress,and improved surface *** factors effectively prevented the initiation of fatigue crack at the surface and shifted it to the sublayer,and inhibited the subsequent crack propagation.

BACKGROUND： It has been demonstrated that transforming growth factor-β （TGF-β） and brain- derived neurotrophic factor （BDNF） can induce stem cell differentiation into neuron-like cells. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the efficacy of TGF-β and BDNF at inducing the differentiation of adult rat bone marrow stromal cells （BMSCs） into neuron-like cells, both in combination or alone. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A comparative observation experiment was performed at the department of Orthopedics, first Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning Medical University between October 2007 and January 2008. MATERIALS： TGF-~ and BDNF were purchased from Sigma, USA; mouse anti-rat neuron specific enolase, neurofilament and glial fibrillary acidic protein were purchased from Beijing HMHL Biochem Ltd., China. METHODS： BMSCs were isolated from rats aged 4 weeks and incubated with TGF-β（1μ g/L） and/or BDNF （50 μ g/mL）. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Expression of neuron-specific enolase, neurofilament and glial fibrillary acidic protein were determined by immunocytochemistry. RESULTS： BMSCs differentiated into neuron-like cells following induction of TGF-β and BDNF, and expressed both neuron-specific enolase and neurofilament. The percent of positive cells was significantly greater in the combination group than those induced with TGF-β or BDNF alone （P 〈 0.01）. CONCLUSION： Treatment of BMSCs with a combination of TGF-β and BDNF induced differentiation into neuron-like cells, with the induction being significantly greater than with TGF-β or BDNF alone.

BAEKGROUND： Some experimental studies demonstrate that subcutaneous implant of allograft can significantly decrease lymphocyte infiltration and reduce immunological reaction. However, compared with autologous nerve grafting, what is the effect of nerve regeneration after repair？OB]EETIVE： To observe the local nervous status of the detected part of sciatic nerve repaired through subcutaneously implanting peripheral nerve allograft, and compare the effect with fresh autologous nerve grafting.DESTGN ： Contrast observation.SETTING ： departments of orthopaedics of Zhengzhou Fifth People＇s Hospital and first Hospital Affiliated to Chongqing Medical University.MATEREALS ： Totally 30 healthy adult Wistar male rats, with body mass of （200±20）g, were enrolled. Optical microscope （Olympus biological microscope BHS, Japan）, Electron microscope （H-600, Japan）,CM-2000 biomedical image analysis system （CM-2000,Beihang） and myoelectricity scanner （KEYPOINT, Denmark） were used in this experiment.METHODS ： This experiment was carried out in the Orthopaedic Laboratory of Chongqing Medical University between October 2000 and April 2002. ① Six rats were chosen as the donors for allogenic nerve grafting, and 15 mm sciatic nerve segment was chosen as graft. The other rats were randomly divided into two groups： allogenic nerve grafting group and autologous nerve grafting group, with 12 rats in each group. In the allogenic nerve grafting group, a skin incision was made on the posterior side of right thigh, and subcutaneous blunt dissection was performed prorsally a little, then allograft was implanted. Two weeks later, sciatic nerve was exposed at the posterior side of left thigh and cut respectively at 5 mm and another 10 mm away from pelvis. The donor nerve （with connective tissue veil） implanted subcutaneously on the right thigh was taken out. The number of revision total hip arthroplasties is expected to rise as the indications for arthroplasty will expand due to the aging population. The prevalence of extensive proximal femoral bone loss is expected to increase subsequently. The etiology of bone loss from the proximal femur after total hip arthroplasty is multifactorial. Stress shielding, massive osteolysis, extensive loosening and history of multiple surgeries consist the most common etiologies. Reconstruction of extensive bone loss of the proximal femur during a revision hip arthroplasty is a major challenge for even the most experienced orthopaedic surgeon. The amount of femoral bone loss and the bone quality of the remaining metaphyseal and diaphyseal bone dictate the selection of appropriate reconstructive option. These include the use of impaction allografting, distal press-fit fixation, allograft-prosthesis composites and tumor megaprostheses. This review article is a concise review of the current literature and provides an algorithmic approachfor reconstruction of different types of proximal femoral bone defects.

BACKGROUND： Traumatic approaches, such as sacrifice and perfusion sampling, have been used to evaluate efficiency of stem cell transplantation. However, these methods are not applicable to human studies. Cell tracing, in combination with non-invasive imaging technology, can be utilized to trace cell survival following transplantation to evaluate the efficacy of cell transplantation therapy. OBJECTIVE： To explore feasibility of magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） to observe in vivo repair of injured sciatic nerves following feridex and polylysine （FE-PLL） complex-labeled bone marrow stromal cell （BMSC） transplantation. DESIGN, TIME AND SE＇I-rlNG： A randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at the Laboratory of the department of Neurosurgery, Zhujiang Hospital from March to December 2008. MATERIALS： Feridex was purchased from Advanced Magnetic, USA, and polylysine was purchased from Sigma, USA. METHODS： BMSCs were harvested from adult rabbit femurs and were cultured in vitro with neural stem cell culture medium, leukemia inhibitory factor, and basic fibroblast growth factor. Bone marrow stromal cell-derived neural stem cells （BMSC-D-NSCs） were obtained and labeled with FE-PLL complex. The right sciatic nerve （0.8 mm） was excised from healthy, New Zealand rabbits, aged 1.5 months, and the epineuria of distal stumps underwent turnover and were anastomosed at the proximal ends. FE-PLL labeled BMSC-D-NSC suspension or culture medium was transplanted into the epineunal lumen using a microsyringe. The left sciatic nerve was left intact and sewed as the normal control. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Cellular morphology, proliferation, and differentiation, as well as expression of nestin and neuron-specific enolase （NSE）, of BMSCs-D-NSCs were observed. Efficacy of FE-PLL labeling and effects on cells were measured. In addition, neural regeneration at 2, 8, and 16 weeks following transplantation was observed by MRI.
