Daniau Village in Daniau Creek Watershed, Taitung County, Taiwan, sustained damages from landslides and mudflows during Typhoon Morakot in 2009. The purpose of this study is to adopt the FLO-2D numerical model recognized by Federal Emergency Management Agency （FEMA） to simulate the mudflow, and the Daniau Village was used as a case study, along with rainfall and digital terrain data for this simulation. On the basis of sediment yields, the residual sediment volume in the landslide area was determined to be 33,276 ma by comparison of digital elevation models （DEMs） and by using the universal soil loss equation （USLE）. In addition, this study performed a hydrological frequency analysis of rainfall to estimate the flow discharge as conditions of the simulation. Results of disaster surveys were collected to compare with outputs of the numerical model. Results of the simulation conducted with FLO- 2D indicated that if the countermeasure was not destroyed, the drainage work would function without overflow. This study aimed to review the effectiveness of eountermeasure on the basis of simulation results obtained by using the model to provide references for future disaster prevention and resident evacuation plans.

Transverse mode characteristics of a laser are related to a variety of interesting applications. An on-demand mode solid laser in the 1064 nm band was proposed previously. In this paper, we provide a fiber laser for on-demand modes in the 1550 nm band to prescribe the pure and high-quality emission of a higher-order transverse laser mode, based on a simple construction with one spatial light modulator(SLM) and a single-mode erbium-doped fiber(SM-EDF). The SLM is designated to generate the desired higher-order mode and separate the higher-order mode and the fundamental mode. The fundamental mode oscillates in the fiber ring laser, and therefore the SM-EDF can be pumped with a single-mode 980 nm laser, no matter what higher-order mode is *** this proof-of-principle experiment, high-quality higher-order modes are observed from LP01 to *** emission and real-time switching between modes can be easily realized by altering the phase on the SLM. In addition, the propagation of the LP_(01), LP_(11), LP_(21), and LP_(02) modes from the fiber laser is also demonstrated in a four-mode few-mode fiber.

Effects of freeze-thaw cycles on sandstone in sunny and shady slopes

A growing rock engineering activity in cold regions is facing the threat of freeze-thaw(FT)weathering,especially in high mountains where the sunny-shady slope effects strongly control the difference in weathering behavior of *** this paper,an investigation of the degradation of petrophysical characteristics of sandstone specimens subjected to FT cycle tests to simulate the sunny-shady slope effects is *** this aim,non-destructive and repeatable testing techniques including weight,ultrasonic waves,and nuclear magnetic resonance methods on standard specimens were *** the sunny slope specimens,accompanied by the enlargement of small pores,100 FT cycles caused a significant decrease in P-wave velocity with an average of 23%,but a consistent rise of 0.18%in mass loss,34%in porosity,67%in pore geometrical mean radius,and a remarkable 14.5-fold increase in ***,slight changes with some abnormal trends in physical parameters of the shady slope specimens were observed during FT cycling,which can be attributed to superficial granular disaggregation and pore throat *** shocks enhance rock weathering on sunny slopes during FT cycles,while FT weathering on shady slopes is restricted to the small pores and the superficial *** two factors are primarily responsible for the differences in FT weathering intensity between sunny and shady *** conclusions derived from the interpretation of the experimental results may provide theoretical guidance for the design of slope-failure prevention measures and the selection of transportation routes in cold mountainous regions.

Compacted clay liners are an integral part of the waste landfills,which are provided to contain the leachate within the landfills and protect the surrounding ***,locally available natural soils are used for the construction of compacted clay liners if they satisfy the design ***,not all soils in their natural state satisfy all the design criteria for the liner ***,there is a definite need to modify the locally available natural soils by blending with bentonite to meet the required design criteria for the *** view of this,the present study evaluates the suitability of an Indian red soil enhanced with bentonite as a liner *** achieve this,a series of experiments were carried out using locally available red soil and ***,the suitability of the red soil was evaluated as a liner *** experimental results showed that the red soil met all the selection criteria stipulated by the Environmental Protection Agencies(EPAs)for the liners except the hydraulic conductivity ***,the red soil was mixed with bentonite contents of 10%,20%and 30%,and the red soil-bentonite mixtures were evaluated for their suitability for liners in their compacted ***,as the liners in the arid and semi-arid regions are subjected to moisture variations due to seasonal moisture fluctuations and other factors,the red soil-bentonite mixtures were subjected to wetdry cycles,and their suitability was evaluated after wet-dry *** experimental results revealed that all the red soil-bentonite mixtures met the stipulated EPA criteria for the liners in the as-compacted ***,the red soil-bentonite mixtures with 20%and 30%bentonite contents only satisfied the hydraulic conductivity requirement even after wet-dry *** experimental findings were supplemented with the microstructural insights captured through digital camera images,scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and mercury intrusion porosimetry(M

Waste packaging polyethylene（WPE） was used to modify raw asphalt by melt blending the components at 190 ℃ for 1 h in a simple mixer and subsequently machining them at 120 ℃ for 1 h in a highspeed shearing *** effect of modification on the degree of the penetration,the softening point and the ductility of the asphalt was studied using fluorescent microscopy,infrared spectrometry,component changes and various other *** experimental results showed that no chemical reactions took place in the components themselves（saturate,aromatic,asphaltene and resin） during the *** softening point and penetration of the asphalt were found to be closely related to the resulting contents of the asphaltene,saturate and resin *** addition,aromatics were identified as having the greatest impact on the ductility of the asphalt.

Analytics and visualization of multi-dimensional and complex geo-data,such as three-dimensional(3D)subsurface ground models,is critical for development of underground space and design and construction of underground structures(e.g.,tunnels,dams,and slopes)in engineering *** complicated 3D subsurface ground models now can be developed from site investigation data(e.g.,boreholes)which is often sparse in practice,it remains a great challenge to visualize a 3D subsurface ground model with sophisticated stratigraphic variations by conventional two-dimensional(2D)geological *** reality(VR)technology,which has an attractive capability of constructing a virtual environment that links to the physical world,has been rapidly developed and applied to visualization in various disciplines *** on the rapid development of VR,this study proposes a framework for immersive visualization of 3D subsurface ground models in geo-applications using VR *** 3D subsurface model is first developed from limited borehole data in a data-driven ***,a VR system is developed using related software and hardware devices currently available in the markets for immersive visualization and interaction with the developed 3D subsurface ground *** results demonstrate that VR visualization of the 3D subsurface ground model in an immersive environment has great potential in revolutionizing the geo-practices from 2D cross-sections to a 3D immersive virtual environment in digital era,particularly for the emerging digital twins.

This paper presents a method for measuring pilot workload based on task analysis in order that the cockpit can be designed more reasonably. In addition, a prototype system is developed to use this method for the assessment of pilot workload. The method breaks the pilot's mission into several phases, segments, functions and tasks. And break pilot workload into 6 components using Wickens' 'multi-resource theory', which are vision(V), vision goggles(G), auditory sensation(A), cognitive activity(C), psychomotor activity(P) and kinesthesis(K). All missions consist of those tasks and each task have 6 workload components. The workload components for each task have been acquired by a study on many pilots, so workload can be assessed. A mission analysis database is built, and the prototype system can simulate pilot's flight process and evaluate workload.
