The Chinese government has always attached great importance to disease control and prevention efforts.Recently,the general office of China’s State Council issued the“Guidelines for High-Quality Development of Disease Prevention and Control”(hereinafter referred to as the“Guidelines”)(1).The Guidelines focus on promoting high-quality development of disease control and prevention and the strategic goal of“Healthy China,”providing specific implementation pathways for the development of national disease control and prevention in the new era,including overall planning,restructuring of governance,enhancing core capabilities,strengthening talent development,and improving organizational support.

A Comparative Overview of Three Gorges Project's Sediment Handling

Water projects’ sediment deposition problems always cause widespread concerns. The gravity of them varies in accordance not only with reservoirs’ natural and socio-economic characteristics but also with their modes of operation. The unique characteristics, configuration and mode of operation of Three Gorges Project (TGP) reservoir are compared with those of several existing large reservoirs in this paper. As many reservoirs are troubling environment by gradually extending coarse sediment deposition at the uppermost end of fluctuating backwater region toward upstream, Gezhouba reservoir on Yangtze and Danjiangkou reservoir on Hanjiang have shown no trace of such upstream extension of sediment deposition in relevant prototype observation data for the past 20 and more years. TGP reservoir’s in-coming flow sediment conditions and configuration in plane are almost the same as those of Gezhouba reservoir, and TGP reservoir’s mode of operation(usually keeping a very low pool level for flood control in flood season and storing up in-coming flow only thenceafter) is similar to that of Danjiangkou reservoir. New findings of sediment research and prototype flow sediment investigations as well as new agenda of large hydro projects’ construction on Jinshajiang in nearest future assure the prospects of TGP sediment handling.

The year 2023 marks the 35^(th) anniversary of the establishment of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences(BES) by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC).This milestone provides an opportunity to review past achievements and envisage future advancements.Thirty-Five-Year Progress and Achievements In 1988,Professor Chunming Chen,the founding director General of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM,renamed the China CDC in 2002),established the international journal BES to publish research results from Chinese scientists in English.Initially,Professor Chen,along with the renowned toxicologist Professor Frederick Coulston of Albany Medical College in the United States,jointly served as the editors-in-chief,propelling the growth and development of this pioneering journal,while the editorial team is composed exclusively of professionals from the China CDC,and the editorial office was located at the China CDC.

The migration of healthcare professionals,including nurses,is a global phenomenon.It is driven by various factors,including the pursuit of better opportunities,living conditions,and professional development,as well as political instability or conflict in their home countries.The World Health Organization(WHO)has noted that high-income countries often rely on foreign-trained nurses to fill gaps in their healthcare systems[1].For instance,as of 2021,over 40%(52 million)of all nurses in the United States(US)were expatriates[2].In the United Kingdom(UK),the percentage of expatriate nurses was even higher,reaching approximately 18%in 2021[3].Owing to globalization and migration,healthcare providers must possess cultural competence to deliver improved care[4,5].Culturally responsive teaching(CRT)is rooted in the idea that culture plays a vital role in shaping people’s behaviors,beliefs,values,and communication styles[6].Furthermore,these cultural factors influence patients’perspectives on health,illness,healing,and their preferences for care and communication[7].By recognizing and embracing these cultural differences,nurses can provide more effective and compassionate care to their diverse patient population[8].

Postponing AMI to 100 Years: An Emerging Concept

Acute myocardial infarction is a deadly disease, and in the Indian context, it occurs at a younger age, even below the age of 40 years, and sometimes even below 30 years. These young MI patients have high mortality rates, and many of them are not able to reach the hospital. The pathophysiology of AMI is very well understood. AMI is a multifactorial disease and has several risk factors, like dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, diet, etc. However, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has a very strong causal relationship with atherosclerosis. Reducing LDL-C to <70 results in the arrest of the progression of atherosclerosis, and slashing its level to below 50 produces the regression of atherosclerosis. The cumulative exposure of LDL-C to the arterial wall is a very strong determinant of atherosclerosis and the development of AMI. The coronary heart disease (CHD) threshold target of LDL-C for the development of AMI is roughly 7000 mg/year. If LDL-C is 100 mg/dL from an early age, the CHD threshold target for the development of AMI will reach 70 years of age. However, if LDL-C target is <70 mg/dL from an early age, the patients will reach the CHD threshold of LDL-C at the age of 100 years. Based on the current science, this is an emerging concept to postpone AMI by several years, even up to 100 years. The goal of LDL-C <70 mg/dL can be achieved by available oral or injectable drugs. Gene editing with CRISPR technology is emerging as a very exciting modality for lowering LDL-C to a very low level for the rest of life.
