The polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine have been implicated in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. In this study, the changes of intracellular polyamine contents and activity of ornithine decarboxylase, a rate-limiting enzyme in the polyamine synthetic pathway, were studied. The results showed that both retinoic acid (RA) and dimethylsulfoxide (DmSO) could elevate intracellular putrescine level by more than 2-fold over control value, then it declined gradually. In RA-treated cells, transient increase in spermidine and spermine levels was noted. In contrast, the spermidine and spermine levels in DmSO-treated cells declined to about 50% of the level of control cells at 96 h. The measurement of ornithine decarboxylase activity demonstrated that the increase of intracellular putrescine in RA and DmSO treated cells was due to the polyamine synthesis by inducing ornithine decarboxylase which reached 2 to 4-fold higher over basic level at 2 h, and above 6-fold at 16 h. These results suggest that the polyamine metabolism may be involved in RA and DmSO-induced granulocytic differentiation of HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells.

AIm: To study the correlation between pancreatic phase CT enhancement, intratumor microvessel density (mVD) and pathologic grading of pancreatic carcinoma and to evaluate the relationship between the degrees of CT enhancement and malignancy of pancreatic ***: Thirty four patients with pancreatic carcinoma underwent CT scanning before resection. The enhancement degrees and forms of tumor were observed in pancreatic phase. The operative sample was stained with HE and CD34marked by immunohistochemistry. mVD and histopathological grades of pancreatic carcinoma were examined. CT enhancement of the tumor, mVD counting in hot spot areas of neoplastic parenchymal cells and pathological grades of pancreatic carcinoma were comparatively ***: Highly differentiated pancreatic adenocarcinoma was identified in 16 patients, moderately-differentiated tumor in 7 and poorly-differentiated in 11. Isodensity CT enhancement was demonstrated in 13 cases, slightly low density enhancement in 9, slightly low density enhancement with small cystic lesions in 9 and slightly low density enhancement with large cystic lesions in 3. The counting of mVD with CD34 marked by immunohistochemistry in hot spot areas of neoplastic parenchyma cells was small in 10cases, medium in 16 and large in 8. The pathological grades correlated well with CT enhancement of the tumor (r=0.7857,P＜0.001) and with vmVD counting of tumor (r=0.3613,P＜0.05). The CT enhancement of tumor correlated with mVD(r=0.6768, P＜0.001).CONCLUSION: There is an obvious and significant correlation between CT enhancement, pathological grades and mVD number in the hot spot areas of tumor. The extent of CT enhancement is inversely proportional to the malignant degree of pancreatic carcinoma, and to the mVD number in the hot spot areas of neoplastic parenchyma. The longitudinal profile of a river channel can be described in function of mathematical expressions. The logarithmic fit is the most used method to describe the relative equilibrium of a channel elevation profile. Rivers showing zones of high channel gradient and convex-upward profiles can be evaluated in function of the offset distance with respect to the logarithmic curve. The Jama River profile has been constructed using differential GPS data for the downstream reach and 4-m-grid dem data base for the remaining headward profile. The resulting longitudinal profile shows a prominent knickpoint of about 80 m in elevation characterized by sharp local convexity. The offset distance in vertical direction from the logarithmic plot is interpreted as the successive accumulation of multiple uplift episodes associated with the Jama Fault System activity. The horizontal offset is suggested to represent the remaining retreated distance for the upstream propagation of the Jama knickpoint. The highly resistant Cretaceous rocks outcropping along the Jama knickpoint reach acts as an inflection point between two subprofiles that show well-fitted logarithmic curves, thereby representing a temporary partitioned equilibrium along the Jama River profile.

Background Chronic intermittent hypoxia is the most important pathophysiologic feature of sleep apnea syndrome. The present study aimed to determine whether chronic intermittent hypoxia, which is associated with sleep apnea syndrome, can cause or increase damage to liver cell ultrastructure induced by isoniazid and rifampicin in mice. methods Based on a 2x2 full factorial design consisting of two factors of chronic intermittent hypoxia and isoniazid plus rifampicin, 32 male C57B6J mice were randomized into the control group, the chronic intermittent hypoxia group, the isoniazid plus rifampicin group, and the chronic intermittent hypoxia ＋ isoniazid plus rifampicin group. Twelve weeks after treatment, we examined the ultrastructure of liver cells and quantitatively analyzed mitochondrial morphology in C57B6J mice. Results Chronic intermittent hypoxia did not significantly affect the ultrastructure of liver cells. The main effect of chronic intermittent hypoxia did not lead to an increase of mean profile area or mean perimeter of mitochondria, and a decrease of numerical density on area of mitochondria （all P 〉0.05）. Isoniazid plus rifampicin significantly affected liver cell ultrastructure. The main effect of isoniazid plus rifampicin resulted in an increase of mean profile area and mean perimeter of mitochondria, and a decrease of numerical density on area of mitochondria （all P 〈0.05）. moreover, there was a positive interaction among the chronic intermittent hypoxia and the isoniazid plus rifampicin groups for mean profile area, mean perimeter, and numerical density on area of mitochondria （all P〈0.05）. Conclusion Chronic intermittent hypoxia and isoniazid plus rifampicin treatment lead to synergistic liver cell ultrastructural injury.

INTRODUCTIONAntiarrhythmic drugs remain a critically important component of the approach to therapy of cardiac arrhythmias. Over the past 20 years, despite their antiarrhythmic efficacy in many pathological settings, Class Ⅰ and Ⅲ antiarrhythmic drugs have been shown to be associated with the development of proarrhythmias and an increase in the likelihood of causing higher mortality by inducing torsade de pointes ventricular tachycardia and other serious adverse reactions. Consequently, the development of safe and effective antiarrhythmic regimens remains a primary focus of contemporary cardiovascular research.
