Background Pediatric patients are susceptible to lung injury that does not respond to traditional therapies. Total liquid ventilation has been developed as an alternative ventilatory strategy for severe lung injury. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of total liquid ventilation on oleic acid （OA）-induced lung injury in piglets. Methods Twelve Chinese immature piglets were induced acute lung injury by OA. Twelve piglets were randomly treated with conventional gas ventilation （control group） or total liquid ventilation （study group） for 240 minutes. Samples for blood gas analysis were collected before, and at 60-minute intervals after OA-induced lung injury. The degree of lung injury was quantified by histologic examination. The inflammatory cells and the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α in plasma, tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage were analyzed. Results Neutrophil and macrophage counts in bronchoalveolar lavage were significantly decreased in the study group （P〈0.05）. The total lung injury score was also reduced in the study group （P〈0.05）. The concentrations of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α in plasma, tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage were significantly reduced in the study group （P〈0.05）. Conclusions Total liquid ventilation reduces biochemical and histoloaic OA-induced luna iniurv in nialets.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer with abnormal proliferation of keratinocytes. Its incidence reaches approximately 20% of cases of non-melanoma skin cancer, which has increased in recent decades due to growth in life expectancy, increased sun exposure, the use of tanning beds and improved detection of this type of tumors. We present a patient who was diagnosed with a squamous cell skin carcinoma in the chest wall, treated initially with surgical resection. A few years recurred in the same place, so the patient received radiotherapy with poor response. Ultimately a new surgical approach was performed with a wide margin resection by a multidisciplinary surgical team. Multidisciplinary management in this type of procedure is important so that the long-term result is optimal for the patient.

Intermittent hypoxia and isoniazid plus rifampicin affect hepatic ultrastructure in mice

Background Chronic intermittent hypoxia is the most important pathophysiologic feature of sleep apnea syndrome. The present study aimed to determine whether chronic intermittent hypoxia, which is associated with sleep apnea syndrome, can cause or increase damage to liver cell ultrastructure induced by isoniazid and rifampicin in mice. Methods Based on a 2x2 full factorial design consisting of two factors of chronic intermittent hypoxia and isoniazid plus rifampicin, 32 male C57B6J mice were randomized into the control group, the chronic intermittent hypoxia group, the isoniazid plus rifampicin group, and the chronic intermittent hypoxia ＋ isoniazid plus rifampicin group. Twelve weeks after treatment, we examined the ultrastructure of liver cells and quantitatively analyzed mitochondrial morphology in C57B6J mice. Results Chronic intermittent hypoxia did not significantly affect the ultrastructure of liver cells. The main effect of chronic intermittent hypoxia did not lead to an increase of mean profile area or mean perimeter of mitochondria, and a decrease of numerical density on area of mitochondria （all P 〉0.05）. Isoniazid plus rifampicin significantly affected liver cell ultrastructure. The main effect of isoniazid plus rifampicin resulted in an increase of mean profile area and mean perimeter of mitochondria, and a decrease of numerical density on area of mitochondria （all P 〈0.05）. Moreover, there was a positive interaction among the chronic intermittent hypoxia and the isoniazid plus rifampicin groups for mean profile area, mean perimeter, and numerical density on area of mitochondria （all P〈0.05）. Conclusion Chronic intermittent hypoxia and isoniazid plus rifampicin treatment lead to synergistic liver cell ultrastructural injury.

PURPOSE: Clostridium difficile colitis is a relatively common entity, yet large series of patients with fulminant C. difficile coliti s are infrequently reported. This study was designed to identify risk factors, c linical characteristics, and outcome of patients who required colectomy for fulm inant C. difficile colitis. METHODS: A population based study on all patients i n 159 hospitals of the Department of Veterans Affairs from 1997 to 2001 was perf ormed. Data were compiled from several national computerized Department of Veter ans Affairs data sets. Supplementary information including demographic informati on,discharge summaries, operative reports, and pathology reports were obtained f rom local medical records. Patient variables were entered into a computerized da tabase and analyzed using the Pearson chi squared and Fishers exact tests. St atistical significance was designated as P olectomy specimens. Thirty six of 67 patients (54 percent) developed C. difficile colitis during a hospitalization fo r an unrelated illness, and 30 of 36 patients (87 percent) after a surgical proc edure. Thirty one of 67 (46 percent) developed C. difficile colitis at home. Th ere was no history of diarrhea in 25 of 67 patients (37 percent). Thirty of 67 p atients (45 percent)presented in shock (blood pressure, olitis stool assay. Abdominal computed t omography correctly diagnosed 45 of 46 patients (98 percent) who were imaged. INTRODUCTIONAntiarrhythmic drugs remain a critically important component of the approach to therapy of cardiac arrhythmias. Over the past 20 years, despite their antiarrhythmic efficacy in many pathological settings, Class Ⅰ and Ⅲ antiarrhythmic drugs have been shown to be associated with the development of proarrhythmias and an increase in the likelihood of causing higher mortality by inducing torsade de pointes ventricular tachycardia and other serious adverse reactions. Consequently, the development of safe and effective antiarrhythmic regimens remains a primary focus of contemporary cardiovascular research.

The aim of the study is to examine the influence of the outplanting time on the cultivation of the kelp Laminaria saccharina in the northwestern Spain, close to its southern limit of distribution in the North Atlantic coast. We compared two L. saccharina cultures outplanted in February and December. We found that the starting time of outplanting affects to the yield and the substantiality value, as well as the growth rate. The yield, the substantiality value and the growth rates of L. saccharina sporophytes obtained for the trial outplanted in December were significantly higher than those in February. These results can be mainly explained by the effect of temperature on the growth of L. saccharina sporophytes during cultivation. On the other hand, our results show that even in the southern limit of distribution of L. saccharina, the cultivation of this species was very profitable in high yield and quality.
