Extreme drought triggers parallel shifts in wood anatomical and physiological traits in upper treeline of the Mediterranean Andes

Background Treeline ecotones of Mediterranean ecoregions have been affected by the increasing intensity and severity of droughts. Even though the effect of droughts on forest dynamics has been widely documented, knowledge is relatively scarce of how extreme climate episodes affect the hydraulic structure and, therefore, the phys-iology of woody plants. The Mediterranean Andes have experienced an uninterrupted period of drought since 2010, including an extremely dry year in 2019 with approximately 80% rainfall deficit. Here, we investigated shifts in wood anatomical and physiological traits of Kageneckia angustifolia, an endemic treeline species, in response to this drought *** We evaluated the xylem plasticity of three K. angustifolia populations across their natural distribution(31–35° SL) based on anatomical(vessel structure and distribution) and physiological(intrinsic water-use efficiency) variables in the tree rings. We focused on the period 2000–2020 that corresponds to before the megadrought(2000–2007),(ii) megadrought(2008–2018) and(iii) hyperdrought(2019–2020). The variables were annualized and analyzed by linear mixed-effects *** our results provide insights to the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying the resilience of treeline forests to persistent droughts in central Chile. We found that the extreme drought in 2019–2020 triggered shifts in vessel size and frequency that increased hydraulic safety. These significant shifts in vessel traits occurred in parallel with a decrease in pit aperture area and an increase in water-use efficiency, further increasing the resilience of K. angustifolia to extreme drought *** our results revealed coordinated shifts in vessel size and frequency and water-use efficiency in response to the megadrought, thereby reducing vulnerability to hydraulic failure. Antimicrobial Activity of the Methanolic Fraction of Bamboo Pyroligneous Liquor

Considering that the pyroligneous liquor obtained from pyrolysis of various types of biomass has antiviral activity, the main objective of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial action of the methanolic fraction extracted from bamboo （Dendrocalamus asper） pyroligneous liquor in relation to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The pyroligneous liquor was recovered by laboratorial bamboo pyrolysis at 350 °C and then fractioned by liquid-liquid separation with methanol and hexane. After solvent evaporation, we collected the methanolic extract, which was later diluted in methanol and used in the diffusion disc assay of E. coli and S. aureus at concentrations of 0.125, 0.500, 0.750 and 1.000 mg. Through GC/MS analysis, it was possible to qualitatively identify 92 chemical compounds in the methanolic fraction. Treatment with the methanolic fraction inhibited cellular growth and caused a variety of morphological variations in size as well as deformities in the bacterial cell walls, establishing an antimicrobial activity profile. This finding supports the National Policy for Incentives for Sustainable Management and Cultivation of Bamboo （PNMCB） and has benefits to the society and environment as a whole, as it demonstrates the possibility of adding value to a byproduct of pyrolysis.

The high rates of depression,burnout,and increased risk of suicide among medical students,residents,and physicians in comparison with other careers signal a mental health crisis within our *** contend that this crisis coupled with the inadequate acquisition of interpersonal skills during medical education results from the interaction between a challenging environment and the mental capital of ***,we posit that mindfulness-based practices are instrumental for the development of major components of mental capital,such as resilience,flexibility of mind,and learning skills,while also serving as a pathway to enhance empathy,compassion,self-awareness,conflict resolution,and relational ***,the evidence base supporting the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions has been increasing over the years,and a growing number of medical schools have already integrated mindfulness into their *** we acknowledge that mindfulness is not a panacea for all educational and mental health problems in this field,we argue that there is currently an unprecedented opportunity to gather momentum,spread and study mindfulness-based programs in medical schools around the world as a way to address some longstanding shortcomings of the medical profession and the health and educational systems upon which it is rooted.

Magmatic Evolution of Garnet-Bearing highly Fractionated Granitic Rocks from Macao,Southeast China:Implications for Granite-Related Mineralization Processes

Effect of Extractive Removal on the Calorific Value of Brazilian Woods Residues

In wood processing, the production of residues is an unavoidable aspect to be considered. The use of wood residues is gaining importance due to the large amount generated and improper disposal, which can seriously harm environment. Burning of wood residues to energy generation is an increasingly usual practice. However, wood residues hold chemical substances that could be recovered before burning. These substances are the wood extractives, which may have many uses as natural dyes for fabrics, foods and cosmetics, as well as potential medicines. Thus, it is of great interest to study the effect of extractive removal on the calorific value of wood residues. In this work, the calorific value of three Brazilian wood species commonly used in sawmills （hymenaeacourbaril, jatoba; cedrelingacatenaeformis, cedroarana; tabebuiasp, ipe） and residues of urban trees pruning （caesalpiniaechinata, Brazil wood） were evaluated before and after extraction in hot water. In woods studied, the calorific value showed three patterns of behavior after removal of extractives soluble in hot water. For Brazil wood, the removal of extractives caused no significant change in calorific value. For cedroarana and jatoba, extractive removal led to a decrease in wood calorific value of 161.3 ***1 and 40. l ***^-1, respectively, which indicates that the extractives from these species have a positive energy potential. Finally, for ipe, the removal of extractives resulted in an increase in calorific value of wood （67.6 ***^-1）, which might encourage the recovery of extractives from wood residues before burning for energy generation.

Differences in viral kinetics between genotypes 1 and 3 of hepatitis C virus and between cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients during antiviral therapy

AIM： To evaluate the impact of hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection with genotype 1 or 3 and the presence or absence of liver cirrhosis （LC） in the early viral kinetics response to treatment. METHoDS： Naive patients （n = 46） treated with interferon-α （IFN-α） and ribavirin and followed up with frequent early HCV-RNA determinations were analysed. Patients were infected with genotype 1 （n = 28, 7 with LC） or 3 （n = 18, 5 with LC）. RESULTS： The first phase decline was larger in genotype 3 patients than in genotype 1 patients （1.72 vs 0.95 log IU/mL, P 〈 0.001）. The second phase slope decline was also larger in genotype 3 patients than in genotype 1 patients （0.87 vs 0.15 log/wk, P 〈 0.001）. Differences were found in both cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients. Genotype 1 cirrhotic patients had a slower 2^nd phase slope than non-cirrhotic patients （0.06 vs 0.18 log/wk, P 〈 0,02）. None of genotype 1 cirrhotic patients had a 1^st phase decline larger than 1 log （non-cirrhotic patients： 55%, P 〈 0.02）. A similar trend toward a slower 2nd phase slope was observed in genotype 3 cirrhotic patients but the 1^st phase slope decline was not different. Sustained viral response was higher in genotype 3 patients than in genotype 1 patients ,（72% vs 14%, P 〈 0.001） and in genotype 1 non-cirrhotic patients than in genotype 1 cirrhotic patients （19% vs 0%）. A second phase decline slower than 0.3 log per week was predictive of non-response in all groups. CoNCLUSIoN： Genotype 3 has faster early viral decline than genotype 1. Cirrhosis correlates with a slower 2nd phase decline and possibly with a lower 1^st phase slope decline in genotype 1 patients.

AIM： To investigate the potential of bone marrow mononuclear cells （BM-MCs） in the regeneration of hepatic lesions induced by Schistosoma mansoni （***） chronic infection. METHoDS： Female mice chronically infected with *** were treated with BM-MCs obtained from male green fluorescent protein （GFP） transgenic mice by intravenous or intralobular injections. Control mice received injections of saline in similar conditions, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） assay for transforming growth factor-beta （TGF-β）, polymerase chain reaction （PCR） for GFP DNA, immunofluorescence and morphometric studies were performed. RESULTS： Transplanted GFP^＋ cells migrated to granuloma areas and reduced the percentage of liver fibrosis. The presence of donor-derived cells was confirmed by Fluorescence in situ hybridization （FISH） analysis for detection of cells bearing Y chromosome and by PCR analysis for detection of GFP DNA. The levels of TGF-β, a cytokine associated with fibrosis deposition, in liver fragments of mice submitted to therapy were reduced. The number of oval cells in liver sections of ***-infected mice increased 3-4 fold after transplantation. A partial recovery in albumin expression, which is decreased upon infection with ***, was found in livers of infected mice after cellular therapy.
