High-saturated fat(HF)or high-fructose(HFr)consumption in children predispose them to metabolic syndrome(MetS).In rodent models of MetS,diets containing individually HF or HFr lead to a variable degree of ***,simultaneous intake of HF plus HFr have synergistic effects,worsening MetS *** children,the effects of HF or HFr intake usually have been addressed ***,we have reviewed the outcomes of HF or HFr diets in children,and we compare them with the effects reported in *** humans,HFr intake causes increased lipogenesis,hypertriglyceridemia,obesity and insulin *** the other hand,HF diets promote low grade-inflammation,obesity,insulin *** the deleterious effects of simultaneous HF plus HFr intake on MetS development in rodents,there is little information about the combined effects of HF plus HFr intake in *** aim of this review is to warn about this issue,as individually addressing the effects produced by HF or HFr may underestimate the severity of the outcomes of Western diet intake in the pediatric *** consider that this is an alarming issue that needs to be assessed,as the simultaneous intake of HF plus HFr is common on fast food menus.

Identification and Quantification of Corn, Soybean and Cotton Genetically Modified by Real Time PCR

In order to obtain a cheaper method for quantification of transgenic events in corn, soybeans and cotton, primers for real time PCR have been developed and optimized, with fluorescent BRYT Green system. The DNA was extracted from grains, with and without event, by CTAB method. The following events have been studied for corn: MON810, Bt11, MON89034, GA21, TC1507, NK603, MIR162, PRO3;Soybean: GTS-40-3-2, MON87701;MON89788;for cotton: MON1445, MON531, LLCotton25, 281-24-236;3006-210-23, GHB614, T304-40;GHB119, MON15985, MON88913, besides the respective primers for the endogenous genes of corn, soybean and cotton. The sensitivity was 0.057%, the coefficient of linearity R2 ranged from 0.98 to 0.99 and the efficiency of PCR 0.9 to 1.1. The quantification of events ranged from 92 to 115, with a relative error (RE) from 2 to 18%, and a variance of 0.33 to 3.0. The precision acceptance criterion was observed for all analyses, as well the repeatability and reproducibility. As it was found that the measurement of accuracy and reproducibility were within the international acceptance criterion, it may infer the robustness of the methodology. Therefore, the results from replicates with two different technicians, and validation of results by comparison with those obtained by Eurofins Brazil, showed the possibility of specific and quantitative analysis of transgenic events with a cheaper method with sensitivity, repeatability and robustness.

Screening for the source of virus resistance in horticultural plants or specific characterization as hybridization, through symptoms, requires time and depends on the weather and knowledge of plant characteristics. So, it is important to develop specific gene markers to allow rapid diagnosis by PCR. Markers were developed based on sequences homology comparison of susceptible and resistant plants provided by HORTEC SEEDS in tomato for Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) by the resistance gene Ty-1, in zucchini for Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) and Papaya ringspot virus estirpe watermelon (PRSV-W), and in lettuce for Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV). Fragments of 249 bp were amplified only by resistant plants to TYLCV as the hybrids 2648 and Aguamiel, and not for varieties as Santa Cruz or Carina. It were observed for ZYMV the amplification of 791 bp by the resistant hybrid Px7051 and not for the susceptible cultivar La Belle;for PRSV-W using the same zucchini plants the amplification of 650 bp for susceptible and 750 bp for resistant;for LMV the 421 bp amplification only for the resistant cultivar Brasil 303 and not for susceptible Babá de Verão. Finally, it was observed that primers PK47F/R were able to check the Cabotiá seed hybrids of pumpkin Jabras.

Damage Caused by Psyllids and Influence of Climatic Factors in Brazilian Accesses of Guava Trees Cultivated in Organic System

The psyllid (Triozoida sp.) is the primary pest of guava tree in the Central Northern region of S?o Paulo State, Brazil. The variation of climatic factors may influence directly or indirectly the behavior of agricultural pests. The present work had objectives to evaluate the damages caused by psyllid in accesses of guava trees in order to identify materials with potential resistance to pest and the possible correlations of the damage with the meteorological factors, in an orchard of guava conducted in an organic system. Eighty-five guava accesses were evaluated. Each one was analyzed at random 10 leaves containing the symptom of the psyllid attack, through visual range of notes. The averages of the notes were compared by Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The 25 accesses with the highest average damage of psyllid had the data submitted to correlation (Pearson), with the minimum and maximum temperature (°C), precipitation (mm) and relative humidity (%). Guava accesses used commercially were the most susceptible to the attack of psyllid, compared to the selections, with an emphasis to access “L4P14”, “L7P28” and “L8P32B”, which were the least attacked. The study of correlation between psyllid damages and meteorological factors, must be used the medium temperature, relative humidity and rainfall accumulated in the period of 14 days before the evaluations. There is a positive correlation between minimum temperasture, precipitation and relative humidity with the damage of psyllids in leaves of guava.

Ligands present in dissolved organic matter （DOM） form complexes with inorganic divalent mercury （Hg^2＋） affecting its bioavailability in pelagic food webs. This investigation addresses the influence of a natural gradient of DOM present in Patagonian lakes on the bioaccumulation of Hg^2＋（the prevailing mercury species in the water column of these lakes） by the algae Cryptomonas erosa and the zooplankters Brachionus calyciflorus and Boeckella antiqua. Hg^2＋ accumulation was studied through laboratory experiments using natural water of four oligotrophic Patagonian lakes amended with^197Hg^2＋. The bioavailability of Hg^2＋ was affected by the concentration and character of DOM. The entrance of Hg^2＋ into pelagic food webs occurs mostly through passive and active accumulation. The incorporation of Hg^2＋ by Cryptomonas, up to 27% of the Hg^2＋ amended, was found to be rapid and dominated by passive adsorption, and was greatest when low molecular weight compounds with protein-like or small phenolic signatures prevailed in the DOM. Conversely, high molecular weight compounds with a humic or fulvic signature kept Hg^2＋ in the dissolved phase, resulting in the lowest Hg^2＋ accumulation in this algae. In Brachionus and Boeckella the direct incorporation of Hg from the aqueous phase was up to 3% of the Hg^2＋ amended. The dietary incorporation of Hg^2＋ by Boeckella exceeded the direct absorption of this metal in natural water, and was remarkably similar to the Hg^2＋ adsorbed in their prey. Overall, DOM concentration and character affected the adsorption of Hg^2＋ by algae through competitive binding, while the incorporation of Hg^2＋ into the zooplankton was dominated by trophic or dietary transfer.

The area cultivated with sugarcane in Brazil is expanding, and increasingly using legumes cover crop in new deployed areas and in those which were reformed. Long-term trials were carried out in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, to evaluate the effect of leguminous green manure on the natural infestation of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) during five cropping cycles of sugarcane “IAC 87-3396”. This study was carried out from October 1999 to October 2005 in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, at coordinates 22°42''S and 47°38''W, 560 m above sea level, in soil classified as Typic Paleudult. Green manure crops were assigned to five treatments: peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) (cultivar “IAC-Tatu” and “IAC-Caiapó”), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) (cultivar “IAC 1”) and velvet-bean [Mucuna aterrima (Piper & Tracy) Holland] (cultivar “common”). A treatment without any green manure or weed was used as the control. The previous sugarcane crop was destroyed and the soil was prepared in a conventional way (using plow and harrow) before the leguminous crops were sowed. Thirty days after the sowing, weeds were removed and, 120 days later, the crops were cut and its biomass was deposited on the soil surface without incorporation. Experimental plots comprised five rows of sugarcane, each one measuring 10 m long and spaced 1.40 m apart. The sugarcane was harvested 18 months after biomass deposit, on October 25th, 2001 and its stalks were collected at intervals of approximately 12 months in: 07/09/2002, 08/01/2003, 11/07/2004 and 10/06/2005. At harvest, the masses were determined from a sample of sugarcane, cut from three rows (2 m long) in the center of the plot. The losses caused by the sugarcane borer were estimated by the intensity of the infestation by randomly observing and collecting sugarcane stems from each plot. Cloud forest ecosystems of the Latin American tropics are highly threatened by changes in land-use such as expanding croplands and livestock pastures that promote shifts in the structure and composition of plant communities in these ***,shade coffee plantations represent a forest management alternative that has been shown to maintain biodiversity in these *** this study,we evaluated changes in the composition,diversity,and structure of Mexican cloud-forest woody species for three land use categories:cattle pastures,shade coffee plantations and advanced succession *** each category,fifteen 0.28-ha plots were established and the composition and diversity of vegetation was *** of species was analyzed using ordination methods,and alpha diversity was compared using Hill ***-seven woody species belonging to 40 families were *** richness and diversity was high in both the advanced successional forest and coffee plantations compared to cattle *** composition and structure was similar between late succession forests and coffee plantations with both land uses also being more structurally complex than cattle *** results show how shade coffee cultivation is a land-use activity that maintains woody plant communities in a manner that aligns with biodiversity conservation.
