It has long been thought that a reheating furnace, with its inherent measurement difficulties and complex dynamics, posed almost insurmountable problems to engineers in steel plants. A novel software sensor is proposed to make more effective use of those measurements that are already available, which has great importance both to slab quality and energy saving. The proposed method is based on the mixtures of Gaussian processes (GP) with the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm employed for parameter esti- mation of the mixture of models. The mixture model can alleviate the computational complexity of GP and also accords with the changes of operating condition in practical processes. It is demonstrated by on-line estimation of the furnace gas temperature in 1580 reheating furnace in Baosteel Corporation (Group).

Image Magnification Method Using Joint Diffusion

In this paper a new algorithm for image magnification is presented. Because linear magnification/interpolation techniques diminish the contrast and produce sawtooth effects, in recent years, many nonlinear interpolation methods, especially nonlinear diffusion based approaches, have been proposed to solve these problems. Two recently proposed techniques for interpolation by diffusion, forward and backward diffusion (FAB) and level-set reconstruction (LSR), cannot enhance the contrast and smooth edges simultaneously. In this article, a novel Partial Differential Equations (PDE) based approach is presented. The contributions of the paper include: firstly, a unified form of diffusion joining FAB and LSR is constructed to have all of their virtues; secondly, to eliminate artifacts of the joint diffusion, soft constraint takes the place of hard constraint presented by LSR; thirdly, the determination of joint coefficients, criterion for stopping time and color image processing are also discussed. The results demonstrate that the method is visually and quantitatively better than Bicubic, FAB and LSR.

Rehearing furnace is an important device with complex dynamic characteristicsin steel plants. The temperature tracing control of reheating furnace has great importance both tothe quality of slabs and energy saving. A model-based control strategy, multivariable constrainedcontrol (MCC) for the reheating furnace control is used. With this control method, the furnace istreated as a six-input-six-output general model with loops coupled in nature. Compared with thetraditional control, the proposed control strategy gets better temperature tracing accuracy andexhibits some energy saving feature. The simulation results show that the performance of the furnaceis greatly improved.

Single View Based Measurement on Space Planes

The plane metrology using a single uncalibrated image is studied in the paper, and three novel approaches are proposed. The first approach, namely key-line-based method, is an improvement over the widely used key-point-based method, which uses line correspondences directly to compute homography between the world plane and its image so as to increase the computational accuracy. The second and third approaches are both based on a pair of vanishing points from two orthogonal sets of parallel lines in the space plane together with two unparallel referential distances, but the two methods deal with the problem in different ways. One is from the algebraic viewpoint which first maps the image points to an affine space via a transformation constructed from the vanishing points, and then computes the metric distance according to the relationship between the affine space and the Euclidean space, while the other is from the geometrical viewpoint based on the invariance of cross ratios. The second and third methods avoid the selection of control points and are widely applicable. In addition, a brief description on how to retrieve other geometrical entities on the space plane, such as distance from a point to a line, angle formed by two lines, etc., is also presented in the paper. Extensive experiments on simulated data as well as on real images show that the first and the second approaches are of better precision and stronger robustness than the key-point-based one and the third one, since these two approaches are fundamentally based on line information.

A two-phase approach is proposed to deal with the integration problem in theloop layout. Tabu search is applied to cell construction in phase 1 to minimize the inter-cell flow,and the heuristic for layout design is used as phase 2 to optimize the sum of intra-cell andinter-cell transportation cost. The final computational results demonstrate the validation of thetwo-phase approach.

An automated classification technique for large size stellar surveys is proposed. It uses the extended Kalman filter as a feature selector and pre-classifier of the data, and the radial basis function neural networks for the classification. Experiments with real data have shown that the correct classification rate can reach as high as 93%, which is quite satisfactory. When different system models are selected for the extended Kalman filter, the classification results are relatively stable. It is shown that for this particular case the result using extended Kalman filter is better than using principal component analysis.

In this paper the idea of Intelligent Scissors is adopted for contourtracking in dynamic image sequence. Tracking contour of human can therefore be converted to trackingseed points in images by making use of the properties of the optimal path (Intelligent Edge). Themain advantage of the approach is that it can handle correctly occlusions that occur frequently whenhuman is moving. Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) is used to represent parametrically thecontour that one wants to track. In order to track robustly the contour in images, similarity andcompatibility measurements of the edge are computed as the weighting functions of optimal *** reduce dramatically the computational load, an efficient method for extracting the regioninterested is proposed. Experiments show that the approach works robustly for sequences withfrequent occlusions.

Efficient Fingerprint Matching Algorithm for Integrated Circuit Cards

Fingerprint matching is a crucial step in fingerprint identification. Recently, a variety of algorithms for this issue have been developed. Each of them is application situation specific and has its advantages and disadvantages. It is highly desired to develop an efficient fingerprint verification technology for Integrated Circuit (IC) Cards or chips. IC cards have some special characteristics, such as very small storage space and slow processing speed, which hinder the use of most fingerprint matching algorithms in such situations. In order to solve this problem, the paper presents an improved minutia-pattern (minutiae-based) matching algorithm by employing the orientation field of the fingerprint as a new feature. Our algorithm not only inherits the advantages of the general minutia-pattern matching algorithms, but also overcomes their. disadvantages. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can greatly improve the performance of fingerprint matching in both accuracy and efficiency, and it is very suitable for applications in IC cards.

Stability analysis of generalized predictive control based on Kleinman's controllers

With Kleinmans controller, its extended form and Riccati iteration as analyzing tools, the stability of GPC under various parameter cases is discussed. The overall closed-loop stability conclusions of GPC in equivalence with Kleinmans controller are obtained, which cover some existing results and provide the theoretical foundation for stable design of predictive control.
