Rethinking the Modern Transformation of Classical chinese Literary Theory

Though it is not new, the topic of the modem transformation of classical chinese literary theory still holds profound significance for China＇s current efforts in carrying forward the essence of classical literary theory and constructing a new literary theory that conforms to the spirit of our times. Today, chinese scholars have to handle two traditions： one is the classical literary scholarship up to the 19th century, distant in time and space from today; the other is the modern tradition that started in the early 20th century. These two traditions involve not only rupture and heterogeneous change but also continuity and partial homogeneous preservation. Taking our stand on the modem and contemporary tradition, we should consciously pursue research on classical literary theory, using modem consciousness to scrutinize, reorder, discover, select, interpret, activate and absorb its finer elements, those that are still vital, so as to creatively promote its modem transformation and further integrate it as an organic component of the construction of modem chinese literary theory. Over the past two or three decades, chinese scholars have been advancing this great project in a systematic and solid way, achieving gratifying progress. We must strengthen our efforts and make further progress with this great undertaking.

The Intrinsic Influence of the Poetics of Yanzhi on Modern chinese literature

Rejection and denunciation of the poetics of ＂yanzhi＂（literally ＂expressing one＇s thought or ideals＂） was once a marker of chinese literature＇s modem transformation. However, right from the beginning of May Fourth new literature, the poetics of ＂yanzhi＂ was not only not cast out of the aesthetic canon of modem chinese literature but was, on the contrary, legitimately transmitted via Western discourse. Whether modem chinese writers were expressing enlightenment ideas of saving the nation or voicing their personal feelings for their country and their people, they remained convinced that ＂zhi＂ was ＂feelings＂ writ large and ＂feelings＂ were a lesser form of ＂zhi.＂ Specifically, the school stressing the idea that ＂literature expresses thought＂ advocated utilitarian literary creation and returned to the traditional chinese poetics of ＂yanzhi＂ by replacing ＂feelings＂ with ＂zhi.＂ Those stressing the idea that ＂literature expresses feelings＂ advocated writing with genuine emotion; they went on to express ＂zhi＂ via ＂feelings,＂ thus returning to the traditional chinese way of thought. Both the theory and practice of modem chinese literature have a strange ＂Western＂ tint. Nevertheless, this literature＇s essential character of ＂reinterpreting the ＇dao＇（way）＂ and sophisticated ＂expression of thought＂ or ＂yanzhi＂ indicate its value identification withtraditional culture rather than the simple abandonment of ＂tradition＂ in pursuit of ＂the West.＂

The sources of meanings of literary works can be reviewed from various angles, one of which should be hermeneutics. Since the mid-20~ century, Western hermeneutics developed two important types of theories： one was the ontological hermeneutics from Martin heidegger to Hans-Georg Gadamer, orientated towards the reader-centered theory in terms of the view of meanings; the other was the ＂hermeneutics as the general methodology of the Geisteswissenschaften＂ represented by Italian philosopher Emilio Betti, which affirmed that the author （subject） was one of the important sources of meanings of works. Due to intricate reasons, the latter exerted less influence, and Gadamer＇s ontological hermeneutics firmly stuck to a mainstay position in European and American academia. Since the 1990s, the circle of literature in China has also been greatly influenced by the hermeneutic theories from heidegger and Gadamer to reception aesthetics, and Betti＇s impact almost can be neglected. Consequently, the view of meanings of literary works from the perspective of the reader-centered theory has been widely accepted, and the role of the author to endow initial meanings to his works was belittled and even denied. Since Zhang Jiang advanced the theory of ＂imposed interpretation＂ in 2014, academia has begun to reflect upon the one-sidedness of the reader-centered theory （relativism and subjectivism）, and pick up the significance, which cannot be denied, of the author＇s meaning in the generation of meanings of literary works. In reference to Betti＇s hermeneutic train of thought and methodology, this essay, based on the practice of literary creation, concludes that the meaning of a literary work is created by the author and readers together in their interaction, and constantly generated in the dynamic process of the three factors of author, literary texts and readers, rather than by the author alone, or by readers solely.

Simple Remarks of The True Story of Ah Q and Chi Pheo

Ah Q and Chi Pheo are two typical figures created by two writers, Lu Xun of China and Nam Cao of Vietnam Authors use the typical method to create the artistic image which has the distinct individuality and can reflect certain social essence. ＂Ah Q＂ and ＂Chi Pheo＂ though in different nationalities and different age （Ah Q in the modern history stage 1911, Chi Pheo in the modem history of stage 1941）, but both are in the historical stage of the Eastern feudal society. Therefore, it can be considered that Lu Xun and Nam Cao are contemporaries. Besides, these two writers are deeply interested in the subject matter of the underclass farmers, so there are differences between the two typical characters. It is not surprising that the characters of＂Ah Q＂ and ＂Chi Pheo＂ walk from the novel to the screen, from the big screen to every corner of the lives of the people of the two countries, let the past. Present and future people can not forget them. Through the method of portraying characters, readers can further understand Lu Xun and Nam Cao＇s creative art thoughts. The social environment and historical background behind the fate of the characters. This paper attempts to find out the similarities and differences of the writers in portraying the art of the characters. Creative resonance and display of literary exchanges between the two countries

International Popularization of Beijing Culture: A Cross-cultural Perspective Based on an Investigation of Beijing-based International Students' Identity with Beijing Culture

To more vigorously promote Beijing culture internationally is bothan essential link in the strategy to turn Beijing into a cultural center and an international exchange center. This promotion would also serve as a critical step to advance the cultural development and internationalization of Beijing. As an important group of foreigners living in Beijing, foreign students can play a unique part in upgrading Beijing culture' s international *** students look at Beijing culture from a cross-cultural standpoint and thus can offer a vital reference for the international promotion effort. Using a combination of questionnaires and interviews, the author surveyed international students in seven Beijing universities that have a relatively high number of foreign students. Based on this firsthand data, this paper analyzes the Beijing-based international students' identity with Beijing culture, reflects on the experiences and inadequacies in the current promotion of Beijing culture, and makes relevant suggestions regarding the inadequacies.

Integrating letters and sounds are essential for successful reading in alphabetic languages. It remains unclear if native speakers of non-alphabetic languages integrate letters and sounds in reading an alphabetic lan- guage in the same way as native alphabetic readers do. chinese is a morpho-syllabic system （each character cor- responds to one syllable） and contrasts sharply with alphabetic languages such as English. Several fMRI studies have shown that native chinese speakers apply their native language system to read English words. By using the cross- modal mismatch negativity （MMN） paradigm, we directly investigated letter-sound integration for reading in English among native chinese speakers. To investigate the effect of native language background on letter-sound integration in second language reading, a group of native Korean English learners served as a comparison group. We compared MMN responses between an auditory only condition （only vowels presented） and two audiovisual conditions （AV0, vowel presented synchronously with the corresponding letter; AV200, the letter presented 200 ms before the corresponding vowel） for both native chinese and native Korean speakers. Native chinese speakers demonstrated significantly attenuated MMN amplitudes in audiovisual conditions compared with the auditory only condition, regardless of their phonological decoding speed. In con- trast, native Korean speakers showed amplified amplitude MMN in AV200 compared with that in the auditory only condition. The results suggest that native language may shape the brain responses of second language learners to reading a second language in the early stages. Native non- alphabetic language speakers may be unable to use visual information to facilitate their phonological processing in the early stage while naT：lye alphabetic language speakers are capable of integrating letter sounds automatically.

An Experimental Pragmatic Study of Readers’Preferences for Methods Used in Translating chinese Brand Names

This survey investigated different methods for translating chinese brand names into *** of Pre-investigation show that five methods are most frequently used in translating chinese Brand Names into English:English,Pinyin,Coinage,Acronym,and English+*** further experiments were *** results of Experiment 1 indicated that participants evaluated translations produced using English as their most favored and English as the most appropriate method to translate chinese brand names,showing low interest in translations by Pinyin and *** results of Experiment 2 further supported the English method as the most favored one in comparison to the Acronym and English+Pinyin,methods,and likewise in the methods used to translate different categories of brands.A“Mother-Tongue”Effect is observed in *** study concludes that English is the most effective method for translating chinese brand names.
