Why Open Government Data? The Case of a Swedish Municipality

Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory study is to provide modern local governments with potential use cases for their open data, in order to help inform related future policies and decision-making. The concrete context was that of the Vaxjo municipality located in southeastern ***/methodology/approach: The methodology was two-fold: 1) a survey of potential end users(n=151) from a local university;and, 2) analysis of survey results using a theoretical model regarding local strategies for implementing open government ***: Most datasets predicted to be useful were on: sustainability and environment;preschool and school;municipality and politics. The use context given is primarily research and development, informing policies and decision making;but also education, informing personal choices, informing citizens and creating services based on open data. Not the least, the need for educating target user groups on data literacy emerged. A tentative pattern comprising a technical perspective on open data and a social perspective on open government was identified. Research limitations: In line with available funding, the nature of the study was exploratory and implemented as an anonymous web-based survey of employees and students at the local university. Further research involving(qualitative) surveys with all stakeholders would allow for creating a more complete picture of the matter. Practical implications: The study determines potential use cases and use contexts for open government data, in order to help inform related future policies and ***/value: Modern local governments, and especially in Sweden, are faced with a challenge of how to make their data open, how to learn about which types of data will be most relevant for their end users and what will be different societal purposes. Effects of tap water, electrolyte solution, and spontaneous and furosemide-stimulated urinary excretion on thirst

AIM: To contrast the effects of various modifications of body fluid volumes on thirst as reported by healthy volunteers. METHODS: Ten male volunteers aged between 19 and 37 years(mean 22 years) underwent four experiments each, which comprised infusion of 400-800 m L of acetated Ringer's solution and intake of 600 m L of tap water. Half of the experiments were preceded by volume depletion(median 1.7 L) with furosemide. A visual analogue scale(0-100 mm) was used to assess perceived thirst during each experiment. RESULTS: Volume depletion(P 60 mm) while the others reported no change.

Assessment of Seedling Establishment and Growth Performance of Leucaena leucocephala(Lam.) De Wit., Senna siamea(Lam.) and Eucalyptus grandisW. Hill ex Maid. in Amended and Untreated Pyrite and Copper Tailings

Growth and survival performance of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) De Wit., Senna siamea Lam. and Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maid. in amended and untreated pyrite and copper tailings were evaluated under field conditions. The physico-chemical characteristics of the pyrite soil and tailings were determined. Growth in height, basal diameter and later dbh, relative growth rate due to height (RGRh) and basal diameter (RGRd) and survival were determined every after six months. A split block experimental design was used and the data collected were analyzed using a statistical package R, with an additional package lme4. Tailings and pyrite soils had extremely low pH, poor nutritional status, low organic matter content and elevated concentrations of available heavy metals as compared to the unpolluted soils and treated pyrite soil and copper tailings. Growth performance was extremely poor on the untreated pyrite soil and copper tailings for all the species but significantly enhanced by the application of compost and limestone. Treatment had a significant effect on all parameters at all sites. Eucalyptus grandis displayed a higher potential of phytomass accumulation than Leucaena leucocephala and Senna siamea. Even though Leucaena leucocephala grew fastest reaching reproductive maturity in 7 months after planting, relative growth rates of the three species were not significantly different at all sites. The three species can be used for phytostabilisation of the tailings at Kilembe tailings dam sites (KTDS) after treatment while at Low polluted pyrite trail site (LPPTS) and Highly polluted pyrite trail sites (HPPTS) Senna siamea is more suitable as Eucalyptus grandis and Leucaena leucocephala are susceptible to attacks by Syncerus caffer (Buffalos) and Kobus kob thomasi (Uganda Kob).
