Knowledge of the mechanisms that regulate courtship and mating behavior in Psyttalia concolor （Sz6pligeti）-a koinobiont endophagous solitary parasitoid of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae （Rossi）, and of other fruit flies-is essential to its mass rearing and management, Augmentative releases ofP. concolor for olive fruit fly control started in the Mediterranean areas in the 1950s and still continue with limited success. We determined the influence of visual and chemical cues on courtship and mating behavior of this braconid and the possible effect of the mating status of males and females in the perception of these cues. Our results suggest that integration of visual and chemical stimuli are fundamental for mate location and courtship. Indeed, the optimal response of the male was achieved when physical and chemical cues were simultaneously presented and vision and olfaction worked synergistically.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Acanthacorydalis orientalis （McLachlan） was determined and analyzed （GenBank accession number： KF840564）. This paper represents the first mitochondrial （mt） genome of the dobsonfly genus Acanthacorydalis. The mt genome is a typical circular DNA of 15 753 bp composed of 37 genes with an A＋T content of 76.7%. It has an ancestral gene arrangement of the insect mt genomes. Eleven of the 13 PCGs start with codon ATT and ATG,while several exceptions such as ATA and TTG respectively for atp 8 and nad 1 are also present. Five protein-coding genes end with a single T, while others have a termination codon of TAA or TAG. Most tRNAs are folded into the typical clover-leaf structure except for the trnS 1 whose dihydrouridine arm was a simple loop. The secondary structure of rrnl consists of five structural domains and 50 helices, while the rrns includes three domains and 34 helices. The control region has a stretches of Ts with a length of 22 bp but lacks obvious tandem repeat region. Both Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood （ML） analyses, based on all 13 protein-coding genes and two rRNA genes of the mt genomes, confirm the monophyly of Corydalinae and suggest that Acanthacorydalis, together with Corydalus, which is an endemic dobsonfly genus from the New World, belong to a monophyletic lineage.

Serine esterases(SEs)are hydrolases that catalyze the conversion of carboxylic esters into acids and *** and carboxylesterases constitute two major groups of *** over a hundred of insect genomes are known,systematic identification and classification of SEs are rarely performed,likely due to large size and complex composition of the gene family in each *** their key roles in lipid metabolism and other physiological processes,we have categorized 144 *** SEs and SE homologs(SEHs),114 of which contain a motif of *** sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree analysis have revealed 39 neutral lipases(NLs),3 neutral lipase homologs(NLHs),11 acidic lipases(ALs),3 acidic lipase homologs(ALHs),a lipase-3,a triglyceride lipase,a monoglyceride lipase,a hormone-sensitive lipase,and a GDSL ***-three carboxylesterase genes encode 29α-esterases(AEs),12 AEHs(e.g.,SEH4-1–3),20 feruloyl esterases(FEs),2 FEHs,2β-esterases(BEs),2 integument esterases(IEs),1 IEH,4 juvenile hormone esterases,2 acetylcholinesterases,gliotactin,6 neuroligins,neurotactin,and an uncharacteristic esterase *** addition to these GXSXG proteins,we have identified 26 phospholipases and 13 *** profiling of these genes in specific tissues and stages has provided insights into their functions including digestion,detoxification,hormone processing,neurotransmission,reproduction,and developmental *** summary,we have established a framework of information on SEs and related proteins in *** to stimulate their research in the model species and comparative investigations in agricultural pests or disease vectors.

Mariner transposons are widespread in eukaryote genomes and have been used as transposon vectors in insect transgenesis. We examined two closely related Helicoverpa species, the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera and corn earworm Helicoverpa zea, for the presence of mariner-like elements （MLEs）. Multiple copies of two distinct MLEs, Hamarl and Hamar2, were isolated in 14. armigera, and a MLE showing a high degree of conservation to Hamarl was detected in 1-1. zea and was named Hzmarl. These MLEs belong to the cecropia subfamily, containing indels in the transposase coding region. Sequence analysis indicated the earlier invasion of Hamarl and relatively recent activity of Hamar2.

This study examines the genetic variations and mechanisms involved in the development of permethrin resistance in individual mosquitoes from a field population of Culex quinquefasciatus, HAmCq^G0, and characterizes susceptible reference lines of mosquitoes with a similar genetic background to the field HAmCq^G0 strain. Six upregulated cytochrome P450 genes, CYP9M10, CYP9J34, CYP6P14, CYP9J40, CYP6AA7, and CYP4C52v1, previously identified as being upregulated in the larvae of resistant HAmCq68 mosquitoes were examined in the larvae of 3 strains （susceptible S-Lab, parental HAmCq^G0 and permethrin-selected highly resistant HAmCq68） and 8 HAmCq^G0 single- egg raft colonies, covering a range of levels of susceptibility/resistance to perrnethrin and exhibiting different variations in the expression of A and/or T alleles at the L-to-F kdr locus of the sodium channel. The 2 lines with the lowest tolerance to permethrin and bearing solely the susceptible A allele at the L-to-F kdr locus of the sodium channels, from colonies Cx_SERC5 and Cx_SERC8, showed lower or similar levels of all 6 of the P450 genes tested compared with the S-Lab strain, suggesting that these 2 lines could be used as the reference mosquitoes in future studies characterizing insecticide resistance in HAmCq mosquitoes. This study also provides a detailed investigation of the mechanisms involved in insecticide resistance in individuals within a population： individuals with elevated levels of resistance to permethrin all displayed one or more potential resistance mechanisms-either elevated levels of P450 gene expression, or L-to-F mutations in the sodium channel, or both.

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci harbors Portiera aleyrodidarum, an obligatory symbiotic bacterium, as well as several secondary symbionts, including Rickettsia, Hamiltonella, Wolbachia, Arsenophonus, Cardinium and Fritschea, the function of which is unknown. In Israel, Rickettsia is found in both the B and Q ofB. tabaci biotypes, and while all other secondary symbionts are located in the bacteriomes, Rickettsia can occupy most of the body cavity of the insect. We tested whether Rickettsia influences the biology of B. tabaci and found that exposing a Rickettsia-containing population to increasing temperatures significantly increases its tolerance to heat shock that reached 40~C, compared to a Rickettsia-free population. This increase in tolerance to heat shock was not associated with specific induction of heat-shock protein gene expression; however, it was associated with reduction in Rickettsia numbers as was assessed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses. To assess the causes for thermotolerance when Rickettsia is reduced, we tested whether its presence is associated with the induction of genes required for thermotolerance. We found that under normal 25℃ rearing temperature, genes associated with response to stress such as cytoskeleton genes are induced in the Rickettsia-containing population. Thus, the presence of Rickettsia in B. tabaci under normal conditions induces the expression of genes required for thermotolerance that under high temperatures indirectly lead to this tolerance.

What shapes the relative investment in reproduction versus survival of organisms is among the key questions in life *** insects mature all their eggs prior to emergence and are short lived,providing a unique opportunity to quantify their lifetime investments in the different *** investigated the initial eggloads and longevity of 2 proovigenic parasitoid wasps:Anagrus erythroneurae and Anagrus daanei,(Hymenoptera:Mymaridae)that develop within leafhopper eggs in both agricultural vineyards and natural riparian habitats in Northern *** collected Vitis *** containing developing parasitoids from 3 natural sites(Knight Landing,American River and Putah Creek)and 3 agricultural vineyards(Solano Farm,Davis Campus and Village Homes).We recorded eggloads at parasitoid emergence and female parasitoid longevity with or without *** predicts that parasitoids from vineyards(where hosts are abundant)would have higher initial eggloads and lower longevity compared with parasitoids from riparian habitats(where hosts are scarce).Although host density and parasitoid eggloads were,indeed,higher in vineyards than in riparian habitats,parasitoid longevity did not follow the predicted *** without feeding differed among field sites,but it was not affected by habitat type(natural vs agricultural),whereas longevity with feeding was not significantly affected by any of the examined ***,longevity was positively,rather than negatively,correlated with eggloads at the individual level,even after correcting for parasitoid body *** combined results suggest a more complex allocation mechanism than initially predicted,and the possibility of variation in host quality that is independent of size.

Immunofluorescence has been widely used to localize microbes or specific molecules in insect tissues or ***,significant autofluorescence is frequently observed in tissues which can interfere with the fluorescent identification of target antigens,leading to inaccurate or even false positive fluorescent *** alimentary canal of the potato psyllid,Bactericera cockerelliŠulc,exhibits intense autofluorescence,hindering the application of immunolocalization for the detection and localization of the economically important pathogen transmitted by this insect,“Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum”(Lso).In the present study,we tested the use of irradiation,hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)and Sudan black B(SBB)treatments to reduce the autofluorescence in the *** alimentary canal ***,we assessed the compatibility of the above‐mentioned treatments with Lso immunolocalization and actin staining using *** results showed that the autofluorescence in the alimentary canal was reduced by irradiation,H2O2,or SBB *** compatibility assays indicated that irradiation and H2O2 treatment both greatly reduced the fluorescent signal associated with Lso and ***,the SBB incubation preserved those target signals,while efficiently eliminating autofluorescence in the psyllid alimentary ***,herein we propose a robust method for reducing the autofluorescence in the *** alimentary canal with SBB treatment,which may improve the use of immunofluorescence labeling in this *** method may also have a wide range of uses by reducing the autofluorescence in other arthropod species.

Intercrop movement of convergent lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens （Coleoptera： Coccinellidae）, between adjacent cotton and alfalfa

A 2-year study was conducted to characterize the intercrop movement of conver- gent lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville （Coleoptera： Coccinellidae） between adjacent cotton and alfalfa. A dual protein-marking method was used to assess the intercrop movement of the lady beetles in each crop. In turns field collected lady beetles in each crop were assayed by protein specific ELISA to quantify the movement of beetles between the crops. Results indicated that a high percentage of convergent lady beetles caught in cotton （46% in 2008; 56% in 2009） and alfalfa （46% in 2008; 71% in 2009） contained a protein mark, thus indicating that convergent lady beetle movement was largely bidirectional between the adjacent crops. Although at a much lower proportion, lady beetles also showed unidirectional movement from cotton to alfalfa （5% in 2008 and 6% in 2009） and from alfalfa to cotton （9% in 2008 and 14% in 2009）. The season-long bidirectional movement exhibited by the beetles was significantly higher in alfalfa than cotton during both years of the study. The total influx of lady beetles （bidirectional and unidirectional combined） was significantly higher in alfalfa compared with that in cotton for both years. While convergent lady beetles moved between adjacent cotton and alfalfa, they were more attracted to alfalfa when cotton was not flowering and/or when alfalfa of- fered more opportunities for prey. This study offers much needed information on intercrop movement of the convergent lady beetle that should facilitate integrated pest management decisions in cotton utilizing conservation biological control.
